Terrific unit records all DVD and CD formats.
by loubobber on March 21, 2005
Pros: Records DVD+R, DVD-R as well as CDs. Simple menu function. Full complement of inputs, including digital. S-video output as well as input. Front firewire input.
Cons: An input gain control would be nice.

Summary: Dear Cnet: Come on, what recorder did you really test in your review? It couldn't have been the LiteOn 5005. It's the only machine I found that records on ANY DVD media plus CD media as well--how could you have overlooked that major feature? As for appearance and reproduction quality, I can't fault it, so far. I've transferred old tapes and LPs without a hitch. A friend of mine is a film directer who uses his 5005 all the time with no complaints. I did have an intermittent initilizing problem with my first unit, but the LiteOn people repaired and returned it within a week. No problems since. In my opinion, you've done a disservice to a very nice piece of equipment. You guys blew it this time around.

Great Machine, Flexible, easy to use, inexpensive
by rick1635 on March 21, 2005

Summary: Out of the box it was easy to incorporate into my current home theater system. Wired it through my current VCR. No picture quality drop. Burned a CD from my DV cam. Quality was great with some degradation due to SVCD limits. DVD quality from the same video on the DV camera seemed like an exact duplicate of the original. It did a fine job in recording TV shows and showed little degradation when dropping down to SP (2hr recording) mode. Futher degradation occured as I increased the recording time up to 6 hours which is still good enough for a throw away program. The only con goes to the format which cannot allow you to record great quality video for more than 1 hour. If you want to archive a Super Bowl or other important video, there is no option on this type of format. Cnet reviewer is flat out wrong. I bought this machine for $160 at BJ's. There is not a better deal on the market today.

Great recorder for the money

Summary: The picture quality of this unit is great when it comes to comparing it to VCR. I don't know about how much more the video quality can be in the more expensive units. I used the one, two and four hours settings and even the later is ok. Very simple to operate and the menu system is very easy and fun to use. I have a HD tv and I even recorded HD channels but ofcourse you don't get HD output from this unit. The result was outstanding never the less.

Nice Little Recorder

Summary: I bought this about a month ago for the primary purpose of transferring my VHS movies, I have about 300 and some of the older ones are beginning to show some signs of deteriorating.
It was easy to set up and connect to my TV and the set up instructions included steps on how to connect the VCR to do the copying. The Guider function makes it a snap to begin the recording, and has a small window to show the picture from the source being recorded - be it TV, Front or rear A/V jacks, S-video jack or direct from camcorder - so I can FF the tape thru any ads or promo features and begin recording just the movie.
The titling is also easy to use and allows for capitals, lower case, symbols and an international setting. One tip, be sure to retitled and do whatever other editing before finaling the disc, once it is finalized nothing else can be done to the disc. Finaling is also one easy step and gives a progress read-out and tells you when its' completed.
I haven't had a reason to erase any of the RW discs I've used so I don't know how that function works but based on what I have used on this recorder I don't doubt it will work fairly easily. So far I've completed 25-30 movies and haven't had any problems. I have been using Imation brand +R/RW discs, I have been using Imation CD's for a couple of years for my PC and liked their quality, and the quality continues to the DVD discs.
The only problem I have had is with the remote. It seems that it needs to be in a pretty direct line for the recorder to read the signal, and sometimes I need to press it a couple of times to get it to operate but that's a minor flaw.
It would also be nice to have a 3 hour recording time, it has 1, 2, 4 and 6 hour settings, but I seem to remember reading somewhere on the Internet where there is a download available to fix this.
Overall I find this to be exactly what I wanted. It's simple to set up, use and operate and the produces a good quality final product.
If you are looking for a recorder with the primary purpose of archiving your VHS files, as I was, I feel confident in highly recommending this brand and model. It's a good value.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good product for the price some drawbacks.

Summary: This is my third DVD recorder purchase. I bought this one for it's multi format capability and price. It's great for recording home movies. Don't expect the quality to be as good as a movie you purchase. You could spend 2 or 3 times the price for another unit and not get a great difference in recording quality. One thing that gets annoying is that it doesn't remember the last input you recorded with. So if you want to always record from the DV in you have to hit input and scroll to DV in each time.

Shame On You , LiteOn
Pros: 1. Plug in the power, The Front Panel does lite up . 2. My Dog Now Has 3 DVD-R To Play With.
Cons: unbelievably Unstable. Firmware is Buggy even for the latest One. 1. Record to DVD-RW sometimes cause system to hang, You can only unplug the machine to make it to work again. And the DVD-RW is un-readable. 2. DVD Disk will not eject when it's done

First Day user results

1) Wanted a DVD recorder to output my home video editing onto - so I got the LVW-5005 with a 1394 /Firewire/DV link. BEWARE unit only supports bitstream of a CAMCORDER. Pleasant customer service lady admitted that computers give too much data too fast for the machine. It only takes Firewire from CAMCORDERS. Might want to check this detail before you get any DVD recorder for home editing backup.
2) Discs recorded will not play back on the other two DVD players in the house. Toll free customer service guided me to the website to burn a CD of firmware software upgrade to feed the DVD player. When I learned that this "upgrade" would not fix the insufficient Firewire input problem I did not do the upgrade.
In a day I'll decide to buy something that does not need upgraded in the first 24 hours that suits my needs, or buy a transcoder to take my digital video to analog so I can make a digital DVD recording with the LVW-50053 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

I'm happy with this recorder

Summary: This is my first DVD recorder. I got it about a year ago. It's easy to use and I really like the multiformat recording capability. The DVD's and CD's play fine on my computer and on my other DVD player. I use the cheap bargain DVD discs and out of probably a couple of hundred recordings, I've had 5 or 6 coasters. I recorded my home movies from VCR tapes without difficulty.
Movies recorded on SP and EP speed look great. (It's like VCR recordings-the picture is better on faster speed and not quite as good on slower speed).
Only problem I had with it was, after about 5 months, the machine suddenly stopped reading blank DVD's (it would say "no disc"). I used a DVD Lens Cleaning disc, and it worked fine after that.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

A rather versatile machine.
by Miklos73 on July 14, 2006
Pros: VERY easy to use! Records to CD, VCD and super VCD as well as all DVD-/+R media. Easily upgradeable.
Cons: Limited recording time with all CD media. Poor pic Q with 4 and 6 hour mode. Has some bugs.

Summary: This machine was fairly cheap when it first came out. Still not a bad buy for the first time DVD recorder user. The fact that it can record to CD/VCD/SVCD as well as all DVD media makes this an interesting unit. But the gripe there is you are limited to 74-75 minutes with all CD media. You could put a 99 minute CD-R in there and it still won't go past the 75 min mark.
1 and 2 hour modes are good, but the four and six hour modes aren't crash hot (bad jitter and pixellation) but what do you expect with the price (when these came out)? This unit screams out for a 3 hour mode, and if you download the latest update from the manufacturer, there is a small program online that will crack it and that will unlock the 3 hour mode and make this machine Macro-resistant as well. Do a Google for "Mr Wizard" + Liteon and you should find it. I also recommend you leave a small donation for
Mr Wizard. If you find you had bad jitter with the 4 and 6 hour modes then you will find the cracked software will fix the jitter.
Mega easy to use.
Another gripe - the TV tuner is absolute JUNK. It only receives in mono(!) and there is a sort of microphony in the picture when you record.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

For ALL PRACTICAL purposes an excellent machine.

Pros: For the money, a well built, very dependable, no frills machine.

Summary: It helps to understand the following; A DVD recorder is not a VCR and it has not been developed to that point. A DVD Recorder is more like a computer. So it helps to have lots of patience and some computer related experience when using one. I HAVE OWNED MY LVW-5005 FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND IT HAS PERFORMED AS ADVERTISED; AT LEAST FOR ME. 99% of the media I tried, burned and then played perfectly on any machine compatible with it's format. All the recording failures I had I would attribute to bad media. I also bought the LVW-5006 which came with a Stereo Tuner and LP Mode. WELL WORTH THE $160.00 I PAID. It is my experience that LiteOn makes a good product.
