Stay Away!!!

Summary: I purchased one of these units after doing a lot of online research of available DVD recorders. The R145 seemed to be the best thing available; I could finally transfer my aging SVHS tapes to DVD, and play just about any format available today -- including my growing collection of DivX movies.
All was well the first couple of months. Then, the unit started having problems loading discs. At first it started to require a few insertions/ejections of some DVDs before it would load them (they worked fine in other players, btw); after about another month of continual degradation, the unit would not load ANY DVD.
Samsung recommended that I return the unit to my nearest repair shop, which I did. (Note: Samsung required that *I* pay the shipping BOTH ways, even though the unit was still under warranty!) Turned out the laser had gone bad, and the entire loader assembly was replaced. But here's the kicker: the tech left a note inside with the repaired unit, stating, "Turn off the unit if it runs for long periods of time, to cool off components inside. The unit will last longer. CAUTION: Laser pickup life is short; to save it, turn unit OFF when not in use." Apparenty, this unit's short lifespan is well-known by Samsung technicians.
I've had the repaired unit for three months now; I have done NO recording with it this time around, and have left it powered-off when not in use per the tech's recommendation. You guessed it -- it's begun doing the exact same thing again. Recordable media, rented movies, brand-new movies just brought home from the store -- it makes no difference -- the unit is getting very finicky in its ability to read discs. I suspect I have another 2-3 weeks before the unit will have to be replaced (and NOT with a Samsung brand this time!).
I have numerous DVD player/recorders in the house; some "cheapo" units built-into TVs, and some in computers. These players have been operating, in some cases, for years without any problems. My PC's DVD burner gets a lot of use every day -- much more so than the R145 ever sees. With the reliable laser technology available nowadays, I don't understand why Samsung can't make a player that lasts longer than two or three months. This purchase has been a great disappointment, to say the least.Updated
As I suspected, the 'repaired' unit will no longer read ANY discs, just like happened the first time. As I mentioned earlier, I have not used the unit to record at all since being repaired (negating one of the main reasons I purchased the unit in the first place), and the unit was turned off except when in actual use (which was relatively little).6 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lots of functionality, Good Picture, No problems

Summary: I have had this unit for quite some time now and am surprised by the reviews that have described such problems with the hardware. I have not had any such problems. I have been recording to this unit from my DVR regularly for many hours, and everything comes out wonderfully. Editing functions are limited, but I am willing to bet this is common to all component DVD recorders like this. More functionality would require a PC-based recorder.
For ease of use, the ability to record from a number of sources (including your DV enabled camcorder, which I have also done with great results) and an HDMI output, this unit does a great job at a very reasonable price.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Same as most others - complete failure to load discs
by giorgitd on December 18, 2010
Pros: Worked great - for awhile.
Cons: Difficult loading discs. You can hear the mechanism hunting around. At first, only a few failures. Now, pretty much every disc is ejected a minute or two after loading with 'this disc cannot be played'. All discs work fine in other players. Bad!
Summary: Awful. Stay away. Even if it works at first, it seems that, over time, it will fail to load discs and you will add this DVD player to the landfill. ...
Summary: Awful. Stay away. Even if it works at first, it seems that, over time, it will fail to load discs and you will add this DVD player to the landfill. I usually like Samsung products, but this is terrible, an embarrassment for Samsung and bad enough to rethink the manufacturer of my next DVD player.

Wonderful features and great upscaling.
by MichaelJBrennan on March 14, 2008
Pros: Pro level DVD upscaling, lots of I/O connectors.
Cons: Poor video advance features. Slightly slow boot-up and remotes response time.

Summary: Been using the DVD-R145 for over a year now with no problems as mentioned in others reviews. I did however recommend this unit to a friend and he had the same failure problems mentioned soon after buying it.
I'm currently using it via HDMI out to a Westinghouse LVM-47w1 47" 1080P monitor. Easily the best upscaling out of my XBox 360, PS3 and built in monitor scaling from my very old Sony DVD player with progessive scan.
The only real negative aspect of it is the poor, in my opinion, FF and RW functionally. Technically a personal preference, but I don't like the jaggy, hard to recognize image shown on the screen during the FF/RW process.
Other than that, I been very pleased with the player and features. -
The worst DVD-R ever!!!

Summary: I had this DVD-R for a little over a year, it worked great for about 1 month then all the sudden it would not record most of the time up until it quit altogether. It will not load store bought cds or copied movies from VHS. I bought a computer model about the same time and it did the same thing. I then bought my mother one about 2 weeks after getting this model and her's did the same thing about 2 months after being hooked up. I will not give another dime to SAMSUNG ever again. I am so pissed about these recorders I dont know what to do. Samsung should be under some sort of review for these crappy products.

Summary: I have owned this DVD-r for less than a year. The remote lacks enough power to even change channels from across the room, let alone make simple selections for my grandson on his Thomas video.
Last month, there was an odd issue with the door of the DVD refusing to open. Then it refused to record after it had been programmed. I thought it was operator error, but now it refuses to acknoledge that a DVD is in the drive.
I have nothing but problems with this DVD-r from day one, and it is now a useless paperweigh.
Don't waste your hard earned cash on Samsung's excuse for a DVDr! -
Worst DVD recorder I have seen~!
by Buckyball64 on April 16, 2007

Summary: I am now on my second DVD-R145, the first, right out of the box, would flash static intermittently on my TV screen, this was replaced by my retail store with another new unit.
The new unit worked perfectly for about 1 month, then it began to refuse to recognize DVD+R DVD disks, so I switched to DVD-R's, 2 weeks later it now does not recognize any disks (DVD+/-R DVD-RW, or even factory pre-recorded DVD's).
Samsung's customer service is poor at best, all they seem to be able to do is have you reset the unit, if that does not work you have to send it back at your own expense for them to look at it.

Summary: I bought this unit with high hopes. Its produces great picture, but thats where it all goes bad. Lipsync issues, constant freezeups, pause goes into stop after 5 mins, HDMI issues (directly w/ a samsung TV, so its not a compatibility issue). The customer support for this product is even worse. You can explain all your problems, and they will say "thats the way it is," "Contact DivX for DivX issues," and "please call us." If you insist on the customer calling, why even have a web form? copies of my support corespondence are available to those who ask.
Stay away from this unit, and this is coming from an videophile/geek. -
