Very poor quality recording at 6 hours and even worse at 8 hours. Picky on brands of disk used.

I had bought the Sony RDR GX360 unit hoping that it would be as good as the Liteon lvw-1107hc1 that finally gave out after nearly 2 years of regular use recording up to 6 hours per disk.
The Liteon DVD record quality was very good for recording 6 hours per disk. The Sony recording quality for 6 hours is poor and the 8 hour recording is even worse.
I tryed different blank Memorex +/- r/rw DVD disk and it gave a disk error and refused to record to it. It didnt have any problems recording to the sony brand disk.
Unlike other units with simular features this unit does not have a tv tuner so u need an exturnal unit if you plan to record tv shows.
My overall opinion of this unit is it is poor quality and over priced.
I am still looking for a replacement unit. this is not the first unit i have looked at to replace the one that went bad.
I tryed the Magnavox DVD Recorder w/ Digital Tuner, ZC352MW8 and other than the poor quality for the 6 hour recording time it was a lot better than the sony for what test i did do on that unit while i had it before it was returned to the store.
The Sony unit is being returned because it is not acceptable quality for the price. It is also very picky about blank dvd's you use in it. At least with the magnovox dvd recorder it recorded to other brands of DVD's besides Sony blank DVD's.
If i had known Liteon wasnt going to sell the dvd recorders any more i would have bought a few extras while they were still available.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Easy to use, lots of options, it is a great product.
by Envorgchem on January 11, 2009
Pros: Super easy to figure out how to use, and to set up. I like being able to choose the DVD types (DVD, DVD-RW, ets.) to record to and play. Lots of options.
Cons: Seems to be a little pickey about brands of DVDs. Requires a seperate controller to control set top box for cable.
Summary: I really like how easy this product is to use. I purchased it to replace a VCR I used with my old TV to record weekly programs. The VCR recordings ...
Summary: I really like how easy this product is to use. I purchased it to replace a VCR I used with my old TV to record weekly programs. The VCR recordings did not always register on the TV. My biggest complaint is that it is a little pickey about the DVD brands, but I have found that is will accept Sony and Maxell. So there are choices. The picture and replay is wonderful. I like the FF2 alot. There are a lot of wonderful options with this recorder and the price is good.
We have recently used the .jpeg for pictures my husband took over Christmas. It's great.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Should not be marketed as a "Recorder"
by tommymac70 on December 12, 2009
Pros: Works OK for playback of pre-recorded dvds
Cons: It will not record standord TV programs on stations such as ESPN, CBS, USA, FOX, etc.

Summary: I am very disappointed in this product but even more so in the Sony service. I bought my 1st Sony products in the 1970?s, and many since then. They have been my #1 choice in home electronics. Not anymore. This product should never have been to put to market. It will not record even basic ESPN sportscenter. The Sony web service is terrible. Their phone help is worse, they could not take my contact information properly. They have a 12 day turnaround that does not including weekends!!! They do not offer an upgrade to this product through their service department. Even though it does not do what they say it does. No more Sony gear for me?
