  designed for wide screen tvs only

  Summary: This unit plays many (not all but most) widescreen dvds in a vertically stretched full screen mode. There are 3 screen settings available. The default is for wide screen tvs and on a normal tv compresses the picture into a full screen causing strong vertical stretching. There is an option to zoom in on the middle of the screen cutting off the pictures top, bottom and sides and the full screen mode cuts off the sides of the picture and shows the movie in full screen. Even with that the picture is slightly stretched.
  I replaced the original unit I bought thinking it was damaged but it wasn't. The dvds which have the problem play just fine on EVERY OTHER DVD PLAYER I HAVE TRIED THEM ON. There is no way the company could have been unaware of the problem when they tested it and they chose to put it on the market anyway without any warnings.
  I will say that some widescreen dvds show up fine but the majority have this problem.

  Piece of Junk

  Cons: This one also lasted less than 2 years. It has this annoying habit if you record on vhs and the tape runs out it ejects and turns off and switches to DVD mode and you have to turn it on and off and

  Summary: This thing was bought new as a gift from Walmart AGAIN to replace the Emerson that had the exact same design that I threw away for the horrible squealing it made during rewind. This one also lasted less than 2 years. It has this annoying habit if you record on vhs and the tape runs out it ejects and turns off and switches to DVD mode and you have to turn it on and off and put the tape back in. 2 weeks ago I came home and hear it trying to grind the dvd inside and it won't play since. I was going to buy an expensive Sony dvd/vhs recorder, but after looking at all the reviews it looks like all combos are junk and can't clearly record from tape to disc like I want. I might have to buy 2 separate machines.
