The good: Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon's familiar online store; built-in free 3G wireless "Whispernet" data network, plus Wi-Fi; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it's capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.
The bad: No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable.
The bottom line: The third-generation Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades--an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price--vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category.

Fantastic!

Pros: Easy to use, quick downloads with free WI FI.
Cons: Expense of new books. Adding new books can be expensive to your bottom line if you read a lot.

Summary: As a person who reads a lot of books, I was a "holdout" on conversion to the e-readers. That changed at xmas with a gift of the Kindle. My only question is why did I wait so long??? Easy to use and superfast downloads of new books. I'm still a "newbie" as far as Kindle users go, but so far I love it.

Best of both worlds with WiFi and 3G
by darkexile on January 1, 2011
Pros: The size, shape and weight of this "gadget" is only the beginning of it great features. The electronic ink makes it like reading a newspaper, but less cumbersome. The ability to carry 3500 Books in the palm of your hand is a mind blowing experience.
Cons: There are few glitches in the software I noticed and had to reboot at least once. I noticed that some of the characters in print did not translate well, but they were only minor distractions.

Summary: Getting down to brass tacks, the Amazon Kindle 3GG is a tour de force. A gadget to be reckoned with. Lightweight and easy to carry, it's the perfect friend to have if your traveling, riding the train or just sitting in front of a cozy fire. Much of the content that can be downloaded (in less than 60 seconds)is free of charge or greatly discounted, compared to it's papyrus counterpart. The Kindle store at www.amazon.com offers thousands of choices of books, magazines, blogs, newspapers and Kindle Accessories. There are also Kindle Apps for PC and many of today's Smart Phones. The Kindle is easy to use and like many of the great gadgets to come along in the last decade, ie DVR, MP3 Players and Smart Phones, the Kindle "Hits the Mark." I love this gadget.

Great for international travel
by gadgetfool on December 14, 2010
Pros: 1. Decent screen. New pearl e-ink is improvement
2. Webkit web browser far superior than in kindle 2
3. Unbelievable access to 3g in Europe and Asia. This is huge. Free access with browser function.
4. No monthly fees.
5. Lighter than ipadCons: 1. Browser could be faster
2. Lack of epub support should be corrected
3. Touch screen would be usefulSummary: This is a great product and improvement over Kindle 2. The reading experience is easy and is complementary to my other devices. Ipad is great but is a bit too ...
Summary: This is a great product and improvement over Kindle 2. The reading experience is easy and is complementary to my other devices. Ipad is great but is a bit too heavy to add to the laptop and iphone I usually have to carry anyhow. This device is light and the international support for 3g is unbelievable. Using ipad overseas is a pain and very expensive (I don't even like using the iphone with the international charges). Now I can do without both sometimes since the 3g is sufficient to do simple things. Google maps even works.
The pdf support is great too especially since it uses so much less battery life than laptop or ipad. If I am reading docx, I just save as pdf and read on kindle which is easy with usb hookuo. I can annotate with kindle too although a touchscreen would be better.
Overall a great deal especially if you are overseas a lot.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Third-generation Kindle problems
by ufoman on December 4, 2010
Pros: Light weight, extremely useful outside in the sun and very easy to carry around when you're out and about.
Cons: Unfortunately the third-generation Kindle has not or was not properly tested before being released to the public.

Summary: So far Amazon is in the process of sending me my 4th replacement Kindle. It has an extreme problem of the screen freezing. Which you then have to hard reboot the Kindle in order to bring the Kindle back to life. When the screen finally comes up you are at the homepage rather than at the book when you put the Kindle to sleep. You then have to locate your book on the home screen, open it up and then if you want to go to the page where you left off at, you have to re-sync it and hope that you had the wireless turned on when you put it to sleep or else it will not keep track of where you stopped reading at. Customer service is telling me that when you stop reading you should 1st go to the home screen and then put the Kindle to sleep in order to keep the page at where you were at when you stop reading. However, the 1st and 2nd generation Kindle had absolutely no problems at all as far as opening up at where you left off no matter how you put your Kindle to sleep. Amazon customer service has been extremely helpful with my problems by continuously sending me replacement Kindle's , but I feel that they should fix the problem rather than always haveing to send me a new Kindle every week. The only reason why I gave it such a high rating is because I truly love the Kindle when it works but it's just starting to get a little bit ridiculous as far as trying to get one that actually keeps on working properly.

Great features - when it is working.
by thedougsa on November 30, 2010
Pros: Small and easy to read in all but darkness. Big selection of books.
Cons: Our 2 family kindle 3Gs returned and replaced but continue to fail. Can't often find the page you were on, often reboot or lock up. Service responsive but problems continue. Running latest version of software which has the same problems.
Summary: Like: Features, readability, small size, large selection of reading material.
Dislike:1. Spend almost as much time watching it reboot or trying to get back to my last stopping point (...Summary: Like: Features, readability, small size, large selection of reading material.
Dislike:1. Spend almost as much time watching it reboot or trying to get back to my last stopping point (page by page) as I do reading.
2, Most times it can't find the place I have read to when I open a book. I was at 43% and it takes me to 3% or 92%.
3. I set book marks to get back to where I stop - a pain - and even there it can't always find it.
4. For people with vision problems it is great that they can set it for a large font but since they can't do that for the home and menu pages, they still can't use it as they can't read home to find their book or the menu options. Not well thought out.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

K1 to K3 - Kindle still the BEST ereader
by dlmayes on September 21, 2010
Pros: Pros: Crisp screen; Ease of downloading a book: small size; instant word look-up; quick page turns; large book selection at Amazon - and LOTS of free books offered
Cons:Cons: Cons: Actually, none I can even think of. Compared to the K1, the K3 is a big improvement. It operates much faster, and the screen is quite clear.

Summary: I've been a Kindle user since it's introduction in 2007. I love the ease of downloading a book anytime, anywhere. The addition of all of Amazon's free books have kept my cost of books down tremendously. I have discovered so many new authors and genre's through the free book selection. I like the K3's size over the K1, because it fits easily in my purse, and is much lighter. I have the lighted case, so that solves the problem of reading the non-backlit screen in dark rooms. My light is always with me when I need it now, and I don't have to worry if I need batteries for the light either since the light runs off the Kindle battery.
Many have compared the Kindle to the iPad. Since I also own an iPad I feel I can contribute my observations in comparing the two devices. The iPad is great for many things, but as an ereader I don't think it can compare - especially for the heavy reader. The backlit screen does fatigue the eyes if reading for long perids. The touch screen is nice, but does leave fingerprints that are annoying to a reader. And, finally the weight and size of the iPad is just too big and heavy to be convenient to carry in a purse. Even reading in bed at night can be tiresome to hold because ofits weight. The iPad is great for websurfing, Facebook, videos, etc., but is not the best reader on the market. Also, I enjoy the reading experience on the Kindle, because it is just a dedicated e-reader, and I'm not distracted by websurfing, emails, facebook, etc. I can just read - just like in a paper book.
For a dedicated ereader - Kindle is the best.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

How did I ever survive without my Kindle?!?
by crystalc80 on September 9, 2011
Pros: I get to carry a mountain of books with me everywhere I go and they are so light. The e-ink screen keeps my eyes from hurting, reading from the backlit computer screen would give me headaches. I read a lot! The Kindle is easy to navigate and use.
Cons: There are no cons.
Summary: For anyone who loves to read and wants to carry multiple books without the weight, Kindle is for you. The paper like display makes you feel as though your reading ...

Crisp clear text. Easy to use. Lightweight
by crcomer1 on August 24, 2011
Pros: Ability to carry volumes of information. Pretty decent music player. Easy to figure out most functionalities with little trouble or direction. Keyboard easy to navigate. Easy to acclimate to 6" screen size. Good price for the 3G WiFi combo.
Cons: Absence of headers; an eReader problem, especially for Bible study. Music player has limited controls; can't arrange tracks. Need to move back button away from the down arrow; too close together and must learn to avoid it. Internet very slow.

Summary: Back cover has been treated or processed with a chemical that caused an allergic reaction. I had to return the unit and after talking with the sales staff at Best Buy Kindle seems to be the best of the breed. I wasn't able to keep the unit longer than 2 weeks to see if the cover would air out due to time restriction on returns. I wasn't able to handle the unit without developing a bad headache, itching eyes, face and other nervous system reactions. Very disappointed that I can't keep it. The back cover had an odor that was milder but similar to the Kindle lighted case. The odor of the case was a strong chemical smell that caused the same immediate allergic reaction. I took that back after 2 days and put the Kindle in a cloth case. After continuing to experience milder reactions each time I used the Kindle, I removed it from the case, handled it extensively and experienced the increased reaction. That's when I sniffed the back rubberized cover and smelled the lighter version of the same odor as the cover. I would have loved to keep it.

- Description: When reading for long periods of time, customers know that weight matters. That's why Amazon worked hard to make Kindle lighter than ever, so you can read comfortably for hours with just one hand. Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback, and thinner than a magazine. Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is easy to hold and read. Amazon designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages from any position. The soft-touch, textured back is comfortable to hold. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Wi-Fi networks to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered over Wi-Fi via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. Wireless download speeds can vary based on file size. Kindle automatically detects nearby Wi-Fi networks at school, home, or your favorite cafe. At a hotel or cafe that requires a password? Simply enter the password and connect to the network. Once you have added a Wi-Fi network, Kindle will automatically connect to that network the next time you're near the hotspot. Kindle does not currently connect to enterprise or peer-to-peer networks. Kindle's high-contrast display is further optimized with Amazon's proprietary waveform and font technology to make pages turn faster and fonts sharper. Amazon has tuned Kindle's waveform and controller mechanism to make page turning 20% faster. This waveform tuning, combined with hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting, make words and letters more crisp, clear, and natural-looking. Font hints are instructions, written as code, that control points on a font character's line and improve legibility at small font sizes where few pixels are available. Hinting is a mix of aesthetic judgments and complicated technical strategies. Kindle's keyboard makes it easy to search within a book, across your library, in the Kindle store, or even the web. To use the search feature, simply type in a word or phrase you're looking for, and Kindle finds every instance in your book or across your Kindle library. Looking for the first reference of a character in your book? Simply type in the name and search. You can extend your search to the Kindle store to find related titles you may be interested in. Explore even further by searching Wikipedia and the web.
