The good: Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon's familiar online store; built-in free 3G wireless "Whispernet" data network, plus Wi-Fi; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it's capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.
The bad: No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable.
The bottom line: The third-generation Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades--an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price--vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category.

Summary: Other than the e-readers apps i have on my phone, this is my first e-reader; i love it! When i first opened the box i thought there was a stick on the screen. The E-ink tech is amazing! The 5 button controller is a bit annoying especially when you're used touch screen phone, iPads, Laptops etc. And the uneven weight it also annoying when you type. Though they are not major deal breakers, they are noticeable. I'm thinking of getting a nook touch just because of its touch screen.

Summary: I am one reader who never thought I would prefer anything but a "real" book but I stand corrected. I love my Kindle and honestly read faster and more often because of it. I have a few friends that have the Nook Color and I like the features of the nook color but it is not a true ereader device. I couldn't consider getting it as an ereader at all because of its LCD screen. It is backlit and I have sensitive eyes, I guess if I wanted a tablet I'd get the iPad. I have read my Kindle everywhere and the clarity and ease of reading on it can't be matched. I also have the leather lighted cover. This alows me to read in low light and I don't need to replace batteries for the light because it is powered by the kindle itself, very convienient! In summary, if you are looking for a ereader you won't be disapointed by purchasing the Kindle!

If your on the fence about buying it, don't just look at the cons. Take some time to read some of the pros (with the Kindle, there might be just too many pro reviews). Pros: The e-ink display is really nice and doesn't strain my eyes. Its even better than reading a normal book. Buying books on it is really simple and easy and doesn't require a computer. Also, it is really small and light which is really good for travel.
Cons: The web browser isn't good but really, I don't care. I like going on the internet using my PC, and I spend most of my time reading, so its no big deal to me.

Pros: Functionally, it really is the best e-reader on the market. The Kindle 3 uses the latest e-ink technology and is much easier to read, has noticeably better speed, and has a significantly longer charge life than the other more popular brands...
Cons: ...but the lack of a user replaceable battery pretty much means that this product comes stamped with an expiration date.

Summary: Add to that the facts that the letters on the qwerty keyboard are prone to rubbing off, and that you pretty much have to destroy the original box/packaging to open the Kindle 3... the overall impression is that this is meant to be a no-frills 'disposable' item, kind of like a calculator. The 'wow' factor is gone with this latest incarnation of the Kindle.

Pros: 1) Small and light, but with a good sized screen

3) The menus now have text-to-speech navigation, for those who need it.
4) Better contrast on the screen than previous models.Cons: 1) Page turning buttons take some time to get used to.

Summary: I got some Amazon gift cards for my birthday this November and immediately placed my order. I decided to buy the Wi-fi only model, because I have Wi-fi at home, and that's where I normally download my books. Plus, if I want to download on-the-go, I can always use my phone's hotspot to tether the Kindle.
The first thing you'll notice, if you upgrade from an earlier Kindle, is how much smaller this device is. They really cut out the fat, so to speak. It's much easier to carry around now. Surprisingly, it even fits in the cover I had for my Kindle 1. (It isn't a tight fit, because the Kindle 1 is thicker at one side than the other, but if you close the elastic band around the Kindle 1 case, the Kindle 3 won't move, and won't fall out.)
Another thing you'll notice if you're upgrading is that you now have a choice of colors -- albeit a narrow choice. The Kindle 3 comes in "graphite" (which, sorry, to me just looks "black") and white. I chose the black...I mean, the graphite...one, because to me, that's more what a piece of electronics is supposed to look like.
The biggest show-stopping feature, in my eyes, is the new screen. This thing is SHARP! Having upgraded from a Kindle 1, I was amazed at how much blacker and sharper the text is. I loved reading on my Kindle 1, but this brings it to a whole new level. It's just amazing.
Of course, it's not all sunshine and lollipops. The page turning buttons are much smaller on the Kindle 3. They're smaller than on the Kindle 2, but they're microscopic compared to the Kindle 1, and that took a little getting used to. On the bright side, you won't find yourself accidentally hitting the buttons and turning the pages like I used to on the Kindle 1, but it does mean (at least for me) that one-handed operation
One new feature that I flirted with is the ability to password protect the Kindle. This locks the screen when you turn it on, or when the "screen saver" comes on. I might use this feature eventually, but typing on the Kindle's keyboard isn't exactly a joy, so the less I have to type on it, the better.
One "pro" that I can't add to this review is ebook lending. It's coming to the Kindle "later this year", but hasn't landed, as of yet. When it arrives, I'll post an update.
It might seem like my pros and cons are evenly matched in this review, but the importance of the pros so outweigh the cons that I really have no trouble recommending the Kindle 3 to anyone looking for a great e-reader.
