The good: Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon's familiar online store; built-in free 3G wireless "Whispernet" data network, plus Wi-Fi; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it's capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.
The bad: No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable.
The bottom line: The third-generation Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades--an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price--vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category.

My new kindle is the best!!!

5. Text to speach w/ headphone jack and built in speakeers
6. Long battery life

Summary: The new kindle is definetly the best one yet. I like to read but at a slow pace and my sister reads at a fast pace. We used to share a kindle 2 (I use the word share loosly because she would always steal it from me) after my old original kindle I handed down to her was stolen. Now that I have my new kindle 3 she uses the kindle 2. I would have not gotten the newer kindle if it were not for this. If you currently have a kindle 2 it is not worth buying a new one just yet but if you have the original kindle I would recomend it.
I am a high school student and I do use my kindle for textbooks. The school I currently go to had major budjet cuts and can't afford to give each student a textbook to keep at home. I would never take my kindle to school (my sister had her kindle stolen because she did) but keeping my textbooks at school and using my kindle at home saves me from carrying about 30Ib. of books to my home and back every day.
I know that I am only a high school student but I have an online store that sells bumper stickers, t shirts, and other cheap stuff to help me get money for college. Every 6 months I have to take a week long trip to Orlando (I live n the pan handle of Florida) to pick up the products I ordered and to make sure my order is correct. During this trip I don't even need to pack my kindles charger.
The only cons I really have is that the buttons to tur the pages are smaller which is something I am really getting used to. This really isn't a con but the just imagine reading a romance novel with text to speach lol. All of the pros are listed on amazons site. Also if you are definetly getting the new kindle get the one with both wifi and 3G because it is free 3G wireless and your only going to pay an extra $50 for it. If you are still not sure about what company your going to buy an e-reader from choose amazom because of the price and extra features it allows. My dad had sony's e-reader but returned it because the touch screen is a little blury and can get annoying. The nook is also a good e-reader but the touch screen really just sucks power out of the battery. Also the nook does not have as many books available as amazon does and it does not have a web browser.19 out of 26 users found this user opinion helpful.

Amazing reader.... More than I expected!!
by osmoove on September 1, 2010
Pros: Rich Contrast, Words pop out at you
The experimental features are great.
Allows you to download music (mp3) to play in the background,
Surf Internet,
Narrate e-books when available
battery life is incredible
Weighs less than a paper back book.Cons: Wish it came with a cover. But I can understand based on the price of the unit.

Summary: I had no intentions of buying an e-reader this early in the game, but the price was undeniable. The initial reviews were great and I must say it lived up to the hype. If you are looking for a serious e-reader and not a tablet substitution for a laptop this is what you want. You wont be sorry.

Summary: The 3rd generation Kindle is the best e-reader out there. It is easy to use and has an enormous collection of ebooks. It feels much better built than the Nook, which feels cheap and has an inferior screen. The touch navigation on the nook is also extremely laggy and irritating to use. The Kindle is comfortable to hold and my arm does not get tired from holding it up like it does when I read on the Nook. For those that have issues with ithe Kindle not supporting epub to download free books or the book sharing feature, get over it. If you enjoy a book or an author, SUPPORT THEM. If you constantly receive free ebooks there is no incentive for an author to publish new books. You would not do your job for free so why should an author? Besides, books on the Kindle are still cheap (or free) and most are priced for less than the $9.99 advertised. Overall, if you want a great e-reader with an awesome experience, the 3rd generation Kindle is the way to go, hands down.

Summary: I had the kindle 2 and was sekeptical about spending more money on a device. I was able to get my kindle 3 a little early. I have to say its just feels better in your hands. They did some much needed improvments in all the right areas. The browser there is no comparing the old one to this one. For the price a definite buy!

I love this e-reader. It is a remarkable product!
by HarryGaga on October 15, 2010
Pros: The e-ink screen is so easy to read anywhere; on a plane, in my dark dorm room, and even in broad daylight. I like the text-to-speech for my young cousins so that they can "read" in my car. The page turns are so fast as well.
Cons: If you don't purchase a cover you can get your Kindle pretty dirty and a little scratched up. Also, sometimes my Kindle freezes for about 20 seconds. The 3G doesn't catch in certain places but that's with every 3G device.

Summary: The Kindle has an amazing body but there are a few things that could be improved. The back has this rubbery feel to it so if you scratch it, you can easily rub it off but if you scratch the front, it's scratched. The buttons for the keyboard rub off easily after much use but they have a grip on them that allows a better push. Also the cursor is amazing for small fingers. Bigger fingers might have a problem with navigations.
The e-ink screen is the brightest gray, white, and black's that I've ever seen. It doesn't really matter that it doesn't have color because it's primary use is for reading, not for searching the web. That's why browser is still under experimental. Also, the page turns can be a tad slow at times. Sometimes the Kindle will freeze up but that does not happen a lot. The details used in the sleeping state in the pictures are magnificent. You can barely see any pixelating in the Kindle at all!
The store is very accessible as well. It's right on your Kindle! When you press the Menu button and then you press "Go to My Kindle Store" it will immediately take you there. There it gives you suggestions of books depending on the books you have previously bought. You can also buy magazines, New York Times Bestsellers, and many others. I was a bit dissapointed in some of the books that are not available on the Kindle but most of that is the author's fault as not wanting their books to be pirated.
For some reason, I have read soooo many books on the Kindle in such a short amount of time. I've read six books in the matter of two weeks. It kind of blows my mind.
The Kindle is beautiful inside and out and is a perfect gift for anyone! My grandmother, my younger cousin, and even my best friend are all getting Kindle's because they are so jealous of mine.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent e-reader hard to hold solution.
by bonstar on October 15, 2010
Pros: The clear black on grey type easy on the eyes and easy to read.
The page turns are very fast.
The unit is thin and lightweight.
Supports MOBI so most downloaded books can be converted by the Calibre ebook program.Cons: Hard to hold onto. The slim design only gives the edge along the side of the screen to grip. I solved this problem with an elastic band holding a folded wad of no-slip rubber shelf liner mesh to the bottom side. This gives something to grip.
Summary: This is my first ebook reader and I did a lot of research before purchasing to make sure I was getting the best currently available. I am very satisfied with ...
Summary: This is my first ebook reader and I did a lot of research before purchasing to make sure I was getting the best currently available. I am very satisfied with the choice I made especially after I fixed the grip problem.
There are a few features which would be nice if added like a better filing system with support for sub-folders so that larger numbers of books can be more easly organized in the library, and a built in notepad program to make better use of the qwerty keyboard.
The Kindle supports pdf and txt files but I found it better to convert them to mobi before loading them. The Calibre ebook program does a good job at this.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Still on the fence
by PhilM66 on August 23, 2010
Pros: looks vastly improved over the earlier models
Cons: epub not supported so all of my old books are useless unless I use my laptop or repurchase. Still not a fan of the keyboard

Summary: I'm still trying to decide between the Nook & this version of the Kindle. I just sold my faithful Sony reader & regretted it almost instantly! I do need the wifi though as I have been caught on the road with nothing to read! The idea that all my books are now useless unless I get a Nook is very depressing!
One thing I don't get is why all the reviews try to compare the Nook & Kindle with an iPad. Cost aside (and that's a huge aside) the iPad is very heavy & not comfortable for reading at all (I had one & tried it). The backlit screen is no different from any other screen - tiring after a while & the last thing I want to do after a day at work when I want to read a good book is to have to look at another monitor. In my mind these readers are for just that reading, not surfing the web, responding to e-mail or editing documents, etc. Not once did I catch myself licking my fingers in prep for a page turn while reading on the iPad, something I had done with my Sony! I want something small (iPhone is a little too small for reading ) that I can carry with me all the time & use just about anywhere so do I go without EPUB support or go for the larger, slower device?5 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best e-reader available. Pfft, who needs web browsing?
by ToolPackinMama on February 17, 2011
Pros: 1) Specifically designed for "long-form" reading (whole books), with the emphasis on the reader's comfort, particularly eye comfort.
2) Integrated mini-keyboard and navigation doohickey keeps grubby fingers off of the screen.
3) Huge battery life.Cons: 1) No color.
2) PDF display... can't see them very well, even with the zoom.Summary: Look, buy this for reading text. Don't use it for web browsing: that's what computers are for.

This device will give you an instant definition of a highlighted word, without moving you from the page you are reading - so if you are reading something slightly challenging, you can carry on with very little disruption or distraction. That alone is phenomenal.
I bought a Kobo and really liked it until I actually tried to read from it. I took it back the same day because I couldn't actually read it. It was so dark... it was like trying to read a wet newspaper.
The Kindle 3 is the best, brightest e-reader, with the highest contrast. That was my top concern. All of the numerous features are of secondary importance to me.
I am a computer professional and I look at an LCD alllllll day. I do not need nor want another LCD screen to stare at. The Kindle 3 is different, and a break for my eyes.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Light, easy to use, portable sums up the kindle.
by stanleyjesse on February 12, 2011
Pros: I like how the Kindle is manufacture with little weight and a very slim profile. It is easy to carry and can fit in my jacket pocket or my backpack. I think it has one of the more intuitive operating programs for all the Ereaders.
Cons: The internet feature is slow and blocky to use. The screen really needs to be backlit for dim lighting conditions.
Summary: Bottom line - best ereader in my opinion.

I am addicted
by Klem67 on February 12, 2011
Pros: Light, very long battery life, very easy to read even in bright sunlight. Ability to e-mail documents directly to the Kindle to read later, great for getting work down out of the office. Love the WiFi.
Cons: Claims you can read pdf files, but the print is almost always too small to read without a magnifying glass, even the enlarge function is cumbersome and not all that helpful.
Summary: I love this thing! I read on it every day. I look forward to any down time to get some reading in. I also love how easy it is to ...

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Amazon
- Part number: KINDLE3GWIFIGRPHT
- Description: When reading for long periods of time, customers know that weight matters. That's why Amazon worked hard to make Kindle lighter than ever, so you can read comfortably for hours with just one hand. Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback, and thinner than a magazine. Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is easy to hold and read. Amazon designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages from any position. The soft-touch, textured back is comfortable to hold. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Wi-Fi networks to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered over Wi-Fi via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. Wireless download speeds can vary based on file size. Kindle automatically detects nearby Wi-Fi networks at school, home, or your favorite cafe. At a hotel or cafe that requires a password? Simply enter the password and connect to the network. Once you have added a Wi-Fi network, Kindle will automatically connect to that network the next time you're near the hotspot. Kindle does not currently connect to enterprise or peer-to-peer networks. Kindle's high-contrast display is further optimized with Amazon's proprietary waveform and font technology to make pages turn faster and fonts sharper. Amazon has tuned Kindle's waveform and controller mechanism to make page turning 20% faster. This waveform tuning, combined with hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting, make words and letters more crisp, clear, and natural-looking. Font hints are instructions, written as code, that control points on a font character's line and improve legibility at small font sizes where few pixels are available. Hinting is a mix of aesthetic judgments and complicated technical strategies. Kindle's keyboard makes it easy to search within a book, across your library, in the Kindle store, or even the web. To use the search feature, simply type in a word or phrase you're looking for, and Kindle finds every instance in your book or across your Kindle library. Looking for the first reference of a character in your book? Simply type in the name and search. You can extend your search to the Kindle store to find related titles you may be interested in.
