The good: Slimmer, more compact design than previous Kindle; improved screen with higher contrast and faster page turns; native PDF support; large library of hundreds of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon's familiar online store; Wi-Fi access to Amazon's online store; built-in keyboard for notes; with 4GB (3.3 usable) of internal memory, it's capable of storing 3,500 electronic books; eight fonts available, including two new extra-large sizes; excellent battery life; displays image files, and plays MP3 and AAC audio.
The bad: No expansion slot for adding more memory; no support for EPUB book files; no protective carrying case included; battery is sealed into the device and isn't removable.
The bottom line: The third-generation Kindle's winning combination of noteworthy upgrades--an improved screen, better battery life, lighter weight, and lower price--vaults it to the top of the e-book reader category.

Totally worth the $25 savings
by mrsbrister on July 4, 2011
Pros: -Minimal intrusions
-"Special offers" are actually pretty good - for instance, so far I've gotten a $10 Amazon credit for purchasing a book that I already planned on buying and a $5.00 Amazon On-Demand credit for nothing.
-Web browser
-Downloading persoCons: -Web browser is a bit slow, but I suppose that is to be expected
-Waiting on new features, which Amazon claims are coming soon (such as library rentals and lending books to friends)
-Less magazine subscriptions available (as opposed to the Nook)

Summary: When I finally decided to purchase an e-reader, I was a bit daunted by all of the choices (mainly the different options from Amazon and Barnes and Noble), so I decided to go to a place where I could see all of the options side-by-side - Best Buy. I'll be honest, I wasn't looking at the pricey-er models (i.e. the Nook Color) since I didn't want to waste money on something I might end up tossing aside and never using. And I didn't feel like I needed 3G since I have wireless at home and almost everywhere I go. In the end, I came down to the Kindle Wi-Fi (with and without offers), the Nook, and the Nook Simple Touch Reader. I almost instantly ruled out the regular Nook - I didn't care for the way the color touch screen worked and handled, and it seemed much heavier than the Kindle or the Nook Simple Touch, not to mention the technical facts regarding the amount of memory and battery life. In the end, I chose the Kindle with special offers, again because I was looking to buy the best reader for the money. I figured that at the very least Amazon has more available titles and is more popular in general. My main concern was that I knew the Nook has a web browser and apps, but was told by the Best Buy employee "assisting me" that the Kindle did not. I went days before I figured that out. Using the web browser under "experimental features" I am easily able to check my e-mail or facebook page, check google, etc. I was also told that I would not be able to download personal documents, and it definitely would not be free. Again, this was completely untrue. I can e-mail any documents I like to my kindle for no charge (using the wireless). I recommend converting them to pdf files first - they are much easier to read this way.

Great device rather slow though
Pros: Size, weight, and portability are great. Ability to surf the internet to some degree is good as well. Love the internal reader and music player.
Cons: Don't like how slow the device is when trying to move throughout a book. When I read my bible I hate having to go back and forth to the table of contents. Battery went dead after a week of minimum use as well.
Summary: Great device overall. No major complaints other than having to go back and fourth to the table of contents which makes reading a chore especially if I am in church.

Easier on the eyes than Angelina Jolie
by naruto277 on September 7, 2011
Pros: Flawless e-ink appears completely real, at first when I opened the package, I thought the screen had a piece of paper on it; in fact it was actually the screen.
There is much longer battery life than you should ever need, as well as downloading the Iliad,Cons: The keyboard is a bit small for my large hands, but at least it's a QWERTY.

Summary: All in all, a wonderful product, with outstanding battery life, appearance, and, living in Texas, the well-advertised ability to read in an oven or a beach, wherever I'd like, with however much sunlight I'd like. I was surprised when I saw the e-ink moving, the same way I'd be surprised if the text in a book started moving. The function of being able to go to the home and shop instantly are great- and the automatic dictionary within any document is a feature I adore.
Unfortunately, now I feel bad when I see my laptop, because my Sony VAIO has hardly more RAM than this tiny Kindle. I'm raising my eyebrows at my computer now. -
