The good: Color e-book reader with vibrant 7-inch touch screen; zippy performance; built-in Wi-Fi; Barnes & Noble Nookbook store; 8GB onboard memory, plus microSD expansion slot; built-in Web browser works well; supports PDF, Word, and ePub files; displays images and some video formats; support for audio and MP3 playback; new Nook apps expand functionality of the device and make it more of a full-featured tablet; Flash support for Web browser.
The bad: Eight hours battery life for reading pales in comparison with battery life on e-ink readers; no access to full Android Market; battery isn't user-replaceable; processor could be faster.
The bottom line: Barnes & Noble's Nook Color is a capable color touch-screen e-book reader that offers much of the functionality of an Android tablet for half the price of an iPad.

Major Defect in the Touchscreen itselt
by imchaiwala on February 3, 2011
Pros: small, easy to use
Cons: no app store. My Nook Color arrived with the "phantom clicking" symptom. I called BN to get it RMA'ed. They said there is a problem in the touchscreen itself and many units are defective!!!!
Summary: The customer service really stinks. They have no accountability. They still havent sent the new one b/c there is a huge backorder.

Nice is all you read are Novels
by bddsr on January 31, 2011
Pros: good color reader that was relatively fast. You do need to apply the screen saver to cut down on glare. It was nice to have a few more features then just an ebook reader. I also liked the idea of the expandable memory.
Cons: Even though it does more then an ebook don't think it is a tablet. Screen is not as good as a normal ebook, This is the price you pay for color. Hung it twice in 4 hour. Scrolling is not smooth. some text and graphics cut off in books
Summary: While evaluating this I compared it against my iPhone and my sons iPad. The iPhone worked better then the nook at reading pdf files, even though the screen was smaller. ...
Summary: While evaluating this I compared it against my iPhone and my sons iPad. The iPhone worked better then the nook at reading pdf files, even though the screen was smaller. The nook would sometimes have a red X across parts of the pdf's. The same pdf's did not have this problem on any other devices, including my computers. I downloaded some sample books from BN, some technical and some novels. The novels read fine but the technical manuals did not, sometimes the text would run off the page, graphics would get cut off and there was no way to scroll to the cut off sections. On some of the graphics the image was so small that it was impossible to see what they were therefore. There is no way to enlarge the graphics to see them better. In short I could read my books better on my iPhone and on the iPad it was a breeze to read, there is still the glare issue on both the nook color and the iPad. If all you want to do is read novel's, possible newspaper or the such, then I would recommend buying a black and white ebook reader like the basic nook. You will save a fair amount of money that way and get a good electronic book. If you want something more the get an iPad or even an iPhone, though the iPhone is small for reading. The iPhone was a better reader then the nook color for the type of books I need to read. The iPad was perfect for a color reader and it is also a tablet, I returned the nook color and will be buying the iPad. More money but after comparing the two well worth it.

Summary: This expected way better that I expected, I was expecting to be a tad disappointed, but that wasn't the case at all. The screen is responsive and the interface has virtually no lag. The web browser is surprisingly fast for this type of device and the colors are amazing. There's a good variety of magazines and you can get free library books as well. It's actually closer to a tablet than an ereader. This is a keeper for me.
Edited to correct my first statement, I meant to say this performed better than I expected,

Also I need to add, youtube video resolution is poor, but pandora plays flawlesly.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

I love it!

Pros: Touch screen is amazing, and it is a lot faster than the regular Nook. you can control the screen brightness, so glare isn't an issue. I love the internet browsing.Books download super fast. Convenient size, not too heavy. I carry it in my purse.
Cons: No Android Market

Summary: I Love the size and the ability to view magazines. The magazine pics look vibrant, and the screen adds more depth (in my opinion), It is amazing! Glare has not been an issue for me, and I usually have very sensitive eyes. I do like playing around with the brightness, so I can adjust for different light situations.
I also love how fast the books download and how fast the pages in the books turn. It is also easier to turn the pages with just a touch, rather than needing to swipe. The size is also good, because I can just put it in my purse, and pull it out at lunch time. It is also quite light. And it looks very pretty with or without a case. The internet browsing is really fast, and much better than what I expected. Pandora is awesome and the sound quality is quite good, especially with earphones. But the built in speaker is better than what I expected. I use that for music in the bathroom every day.
I also love the kid's books on the nook. They are very cute, and it is awesome that they are interactive.
It does feel pretty solid, but I think it would break (like any glass) if you dropped it. Overall, I love it and I have already recommended it to my family and friends!3 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Not really impressive, battery life not long enough
by piloot1 on November 28, 2010
Pros: size and color screen are nice, touch screeen works great and it plays nice video and sound. Internet browser is easy to use
Cons: web browser is limited in use. battery is non replaceable, if you go for a two day trip bring the charger! return policy is horrible(you bought it you own it after you open the box). screen is sometimes to touch and pages turn before you want it.

Summary: After using it for 4 days I come to the conclusion that you have to charge the tablet everyday or will run out of battery power. This is on a brand new battery and when they say 8 hours of use... I got about 6 hours out of it. The interface is great and easy to work, the free books are easy to get and read. I was reading Dickens, and got to around page 200 out of 446 before the battery got to low and the reader did an auto shut down. The new books you buy are great and the sample book (rudyard kipling how the elephant got its trunk) is a very nice multimedia experience. It is in color and most little kids would go gaga over it. Since I travel a lot I find that I needed something that works longer on one charge so I ordered a kindle to see how that goes.
By the way if I would have know what the return policy was like I would have just not bought it. I didn't know that companies sell stuff and not stand behind it and count on impulse buyers to fall for the sale. Even though I was not an impulse buyer I find that the battery life is really to short for a great travel companion. Since I travel at least 15 days out of the month I was hoping to not have to charge it every day. Be careful to turn of your wifi after you use it or the battery will be dead in 4 hours or so, at least that is what I found on mine. Since I am not allowed to return it I will keep it around the houseso I can read my your color magazine subscriptions.3 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

CRAP PARTS
by Mingilicious1 on September 24, 2011
Pros: The Nook Color is everything great that everyone says it is. It does a great job with PDFs now, and ebooks read smoothly.
Cons: Poor construction [in a rush to get them out?]. Charging cable is delicate, and most break immediately or are DOA. B&N will replace them, but who cares if you replace crap with more crap? Read the forums online about the NCs not holding charges and/or
Summary: I really wanted to like my NC, but crap construction along with crap parts have forced me to put it all in a box and ship it back. I guess ...

TWO defective nook colors

Summary: I have had the device for less than a month and this is my second one. the first one would not take a charge and it skipped around from page to page without touching the machine. I contacted B and N and they sent me a refurbished machine and it did not work either. The battery charge was horrible and i was not on wi-fi. the screen flickers and then the whole machine freezes and you have to reboot to get it to work again. Not a fan look for something better that has better customer service. BN will not send me a Brand New Nook to replace the previously brand new device and their faulty refurbished one. I am not opposed to refurbished ones when they work like apple. but it better work if that is what they are sending.

The product is great, but customer service is not.
by Theo_Rio on July 12, 2011
Pros: The product itself is good, but the sound is weak (but with a headphone, there is no issue) and browsing is clunky, but doable. Also, you can't get Scrabble on the Nook -- and since many readers are avid Scrabble players, that is quite disappointing. Howe
Cons: Customer service via e-mail is very weak. It takes a long time to get a response (and I had to send 2 queries before I got a response). I had ordered and paid for Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King before coming to Canada. It showed up in my library, but

Summary: I love the Nook as a device for the purpose I got it (a reader) and when you aren't near a computer, it can function in that way as well, although it's a mistake to compare it to the I-Pad because I've used the I-Pad, but then again, look at the price difference. The biggest issue I have now is that I am going to be insecure about ordering books from Nook to read on the device. One book I had mysteriously disappeared from my library, and the unsympathetic response I got essentially blamed me for the problem and offered no recourse or some kind of discount on a future purchase or "you can contact a supervisor if you wish to pursue the matter further" or whatever. I maintain that I did not delete the book because I am not that ditzy and after ordering it I never went back online until I got to Canada and noticed it was no longer in my library. I really expected more from Barnes and Noble.

Love it/Hate it - I give up on it

Pros: Great color on the screen. Most all functions are very intuitive (although I did read the User's Guide).
Cons: It has ISSUES connecting to a home-secured wi-fi system!

Summary: I openly admit that I'm using this review to vent my frustrations. I received my Nook Color as a gift after coming out of the hospital. Initially, I loved it; a perfect gift for someone who can easily have 4 or 5 books going simultaneously. Since I had the time due to continuing my recovery I delved right into my new Nook. I quickly learned that to truly enjoy the robust features of this relatively new device one has to have a wi-fe connection to take advantage of IT.
It didn't happen right away. My Nook simply refused to acknowledge my wi-fi network with two short exceptions. The first connection was long enough for me to register and the second time it connected was after I updated my router firmware. My connection was short lived. I had the time so I spent the most part of two days researching the issue. To my disappointment I found a lot of sites with a lot of disgruntled users with the same issue. I called the Nook Color tech dept and spent more than an hour with a technician who was very friendly and tried his best to solve my problem. I still had a problem.
I took my Nook to B&N and exchanged it, hoping a different Nook would solve the problem. No such luck. My newest Nook performed just aas badly as the first; it would say it was "connected to my network, but no Internet".. Not to be totally discouraged I continued my quest believing I would find a solution.
I'm not a computer geek so my network is a standard Linksys network with WPA-Personal security. I've used the more secure options but cut back when I had visitors in my home needing to hook into my network. My point is I'm reasonably well versed in how a wi-fi works and it's nuances. I currently have three laptops, one desktop, two printers and two iPhones attached with no issues or problems.
With more research I discovered that one guy suggested tweaking the security of the router (and his was the same model as mine). I made the change and PRESTO, my Nook was connected! Not only that, but it stayed connected when I used it at home. Of course, after that I always had my Nook with me in my home, using one of it's many wonderful features. I loved it. Almost tree weeks went by without any issues.
The one morning I tried to get on the Internet my Nook wouldn't cooperate. After trying two or three things I went to my router and rebooted both my cable modem and my router and the problem corrected itself. I didn't think any more about it.
Three days later I had just finished one of my books so I wanted to do some shopping on B&N. I discovered, once again, I was "Connected but No Internet". I had just been on my laptop so I knew my wi-fi network was connected to the Internet, but I decided to reboot my equipment anyway. This time, however, the problem didn't correct itself. I double checked my router settings; nothiing had changed. I re-entered my network password on my Nook with no luck.
The bottom line is I'm now very frustrated and ready to give up on this device. I wish I could get a refund so I could use the money to get a regular tablet that would give me more functionality than my Nook. I don't understand! There are literally hundreds of choices in our market today for devices that can make our lives simpler and more fun. Most don't have connection issues. It's not rocket science, although I do understand there are a huge variety of routers and potential settings available today that can make it more difficult. That's not my situation. I'm using a name brand router with typical settings and the Nook still can't get it right. There are many frustrated sould out there wanting to use all the functions available, but it's just not happening. I forgot to mention it was my neighbor that gave me my Nook because she had bought one for herself and loved it so much. However, she can't connect to her home wi-fi network either! She's content with finding a hot spot when she wants to use it online but I'm not that way. There are so many features that are only available when a connection is made, it doesn't make sense to sacrifice that simply because one can't get a reliable connection via their home wi-fi network. I'M DONE!2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wouldn't purchase again, knowing what I know now
by crivord on March 26, 2012
Pros: Good color. Most apps and books work fine, but some seem to have glitches. I like the Nook Color, but it is not as glamorous as it is made to be.
Cons: Customer Service is deplorable! Every time I call, they have to refer to a user manual to answer my questions. The last time I called, I asked for an experienced tech, and two seperate times I was hung up on.
Summary: More Cons: Might as well as not purchased an SD card because magazines and books purchased through B&N cannot be placed on the card. So it sits blank ...
Summary: More Cons: Might as well as not purchased an SD card because magazines and books purchased through B&N cannot be placed on the card. So it sits blank and unused.
The battery life does not last as long as advertised, especially when using apps and Wi-Fi. The battery life is strictly for reading only.
I've never used a Kindle, but knowing what I know now about the Nook Color, I think I would search out and look for an alternative e-reader. There is definately much more hype than what you get for your buck all around1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
