The good: The 2011 Nook is a compact and lightweight e-book reader with a responsive high-contrast Pearl e-ink touch screen that offers quick page turns. It's got built-in Wi-Fi for direct access to the online Barnes & Noble store, an expansion slot for additional memory, and long battery life (up to two months). The Nook supports e-book lending and EPUB loans from libraries, and it offers some enhanced social networking features.
The bad: The 2011 Nook has no support for audio, no 3G option, and no Web browser. The rubberized finish on the back of device attracts fingerprints.
The bottom line: The new touch-screen Nook is a major advancement over its predecessor and offers some real advantages over the 2010 Kindle.

Excellent ereader

Summary: I have an iPad 2 and use the Nook app but it is not good for reading outside due to glare and I worry about leaving an $700 device poolside when I go in the water. I decided to try the Nook Simple Touch for a trip to the beach and it has exceeded my expectations. It is very light and the shape of the back with the rubberized surface feels great. I can hold it in either hand for hours and just turn pages with my thumb. It is small enough to fit in the pocket of my cargo shorts. Buying books is simple. I have also downloaded books from my local public library, although you do have to connect the Nook to a computer for that. Nook has "shelves" so you can organize your books. I have posted comments on books to Facebook, reviewed books and lended books with no problem. Battery life is excellent, especially if you turn off the wifi when you are not using it. You get perks if you take your Nook into Barnes and Noble, such as reading their ebook library for free for a hour. I still love my iPad other stuff but for reading I use my Nook.

Excellent e-reader.....Love it!

Summary: I recently purchased this and I love it. My wife has a Kindle which is very good but the touch screen is what sold me on the new Nook. It's very easy to use and easy to hold. The ebooks that I'm interested in are the same price on either Amazon or B&N so that wasn't an issue for me. The screen is actually slightly larger than the Kindles but only slightly. I'm completely satisfied with the font choices and other setting options. B&N did a great job with this one and I'd highly recommend it.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do.
by jdrisko on June 21, 2011
Pros: Excellent reading. Acts like a complete bookshelf. Excellent battery life.
Cons: Requires a computer to download library books - a minimal negative. No provision to replace the battery (a personal problem as that is now almost the standard).
Summary: I love it!

Works exceptionally well for what it was designed for
by gejfay on June 19, 2011
Pros: Excellent battery life
Easy to read screen
Comfortable to hold
Easy to use
Well thought out design for its defined purposeCons: Needs better interface for pdf files.
A zoom feature would be nice.Summary: This is the best e-reader available today.
As a B&N customer you can purchase with a free SD card containing 100 classic books.

First device froze on system restart within the first month. Unfortunately there is no way to reboot the software if a 12 sec hold of the on/off button does not work. I am worried that the designers do not have a way to really reboot, or at least pull out the battery. My replacement only took 2 days to arrive. Keeping fingers crossed.

Great new e-reader!

Summary: This is a great "simple" e-reader. I just replaced my original Nook with this one. As soon as I saw it in the store I came home and listed my Nook for sale (couldn't see buying a new one unless I sold the old one). This new version does not have all the bells and whistles and that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't need the web, I don't listen to music on an e-reader and I hated the touch screen at the bottom on the original Nook. It's a great size and so easy to use. I wasn't sure if I would like the touch screen but I do (was afraid it would be too sensitive). I subtracted half a star because the first time I was reading the device froze on me and I was unable to do anything for an hour. Hoping that was just a small glitch and that it will not happen again.

E-ink digital book reader without the Bells & Whistles
by cybergrampaw on June 17, 2011
Pros: Clear, readable, high resolution screen
Sensitive touch screen navigation
Very fast page turning
Intuitive and easy to use graphical user interface
Super light weight
Screen takes up whole front face
Attaches firmly to cover (optional) with click mechanisCons: Swiping to wake up takes a little practice to get it done with first swipe
Miss the dedicated WiFi on/off navigation button (Wi Fi controls are in Settings navigation)Summary: Bought this to replace my original Nook E-ink reader roughly half-hour after it was introduced. It is perfect for dedicated reading of books (my interest) without web browsers, mp3 players, ...
Summary: Bought this to replace my original Nook E-ink reader roughly half-hour after it was introduced. It is perfect for dedicated reading of books (my interest) without web browsers, mp3 players, games, 3G, etc. etc. all that stuff that isn't really necessary. My iPad does all that other stuff way better and in color. This new Nook is as close as you can come to mimicking a paperback (especially if you get a cover), but has way more power and versatility as an electronic, Wi Fi connected device.

Summary: The "Simple Touch" reader is just that a SIMPLE reader. With the Nook Color available for all of your multi use needs this device finds it's groove nicely. A well thought out and "simple" interface with just enough features. The page turning is extremely fast and the touch screen very responsive. A nice touch is that you not only get phone support when you purchase the device you have the support of all of the Barnes & Noble stores. I have found the employees to be very knowledgable on the device.
A hidden feature seems to be a beta version of a web browser. Just go into search and type in a URL. Viola a web browser appears. Giving you the ability to search the web.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

An excellent substitute for a book!
by kahuna9705 on June 8, 2011
Pros: Very lightweight. Actually shocked me just how light it is. Has a replaceable battery and also has an expandable memory. It can go up to 32gb, which is 24,000 books. Very crisp screen. Grip on the back actually makes it easier to hold. The screen is
Cons: Doesn't come in 3g. Big deal, wifi is basically offered everywhere.
Summary: Excellent option if you're thinking about switching from books to an e-reader.

Great... until it died. BN service = epic fail.
by pc2macandluvinit on June 13, 2011
Pros: Worked great for 72 hours. Loved the Adobe interface to allow library book access. It was so nice...
Cons: ... and then it locked up on the "drag to unlock screen" (ironic.) Tech support was unable to help. I've never had a tech support person tell me "to keep trying that and I hope it works. Goodbye." Way to go.
After a strange and frustrating factory resetSummary: ... plus, BN will not accept the return in store and I have to pay for return shipping on a defective device. Back to Amazon and the Kindle I go.
*sigh* ...Summary: ... plus, BN will not accept the return in store and I have to pay for return shipping on a defective device. Back to Amazon and the Kindle I go.
*sigh* I really wanted this device to work, I was excited for sharing, library loans, and touch. But, alas... not in the space/time continuum.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.
