- The Nook Wi-Fi doesn't quite measure up to the Kindle in terms of design and overall performance, but it's a worthy alternative if you're looking for a more open e-reader that supports the EPUB format.

Barnes & Noble Nook (Wi-Fi) price range: $99.99

The good: Large library with tens of thousands of e-books, as well as newspapers and magazines; built-in Wi-Fi connectivity (no PC needed); separate capacitive color touch-screen pad for navigation, and a virtual keyboard for notes and annotations; 2GB of internal memory (capable of storing 1,500 electronic books) as well as a microSD expansion slot for additional memory; font style and size are adjustable; displays image files and plays MP3 music files; compatible with Windows and Mac machines; battery is removable and user-replaceable; allows free browsing of full-text books while within Barnes & Noble stores; you can lend certain e-books for up to 14 days free of charge; EPUB format compatibility lets you read free Google Books and loaner e-books from your local library; page turn speeds are faster with firmware upgrade.
The bad: No protective carrying case included; color LCD has an impact on battery life; in-store reading and loaning capabilities come with notable limits and caveats; no support for Word or text files; no ability to download books when outside the U.S.
The bottom line: The Nook Wi-Fi doesn't quite measure up to the Kindle in terms of design and overall performance, but it's a worthy alternative if you're looking for a more open e-reader that supports the EPUB format.

An excellent product!
by jashin01 on June 25, 2010
Pros: Barnes & Noble is an excellent store and has provided an excellent product by listening to what people hated about the Kindle. A replaceable battery is a must have when traveling, expansion memory to carry not only more books but more music also.
Cons: No ebook organization. All of your books are put on one long list, it needs some way to organize large amounts of books.

Summary: While the product had some glitches when it was released, Barnes & Noble continued to improve the products firmware and have released regular updates to fix many of them. As they continue to release patches complaints get fewer and fewer. Being able to go to the store and try it out and buy it in the store without having to wait for it to be shipped to me was key. The Nook has more support for open book formats than the Kindle. While the lack of overseas support can be somewhat of a drawback when traveling I just make sure to load it up before I leave. You can easily store a years work of books on it at once. I love my Nook!!

Nice looking unit, lousy & useless customer service.
by oskianYaz on July 20, 2010
Pros: Nice unit, my wife loved it, but...
Cons: Due to very brittle plastic used, bezel chipped in the middle of forward-reverse buttons within 5 weeks. The promised new replacement with reinforced newly designed bezel never materialised. A refurb was sent instead.
Summary: Defective product, lousy unfriendly customer service. These people have no business being in the electronics business. Stick to books. B&N, you know nothing about satisfying your customers, without ...
Summary: Defective product, lousy unfriendly customer service. These people have no business being in the electronics business. Stick to books. B&N, you know nothing about satisfying your customers, without whom you wouldn't have a business!
B&N absolutely adamant about NOT replacing it with a new one. Based on their warranty disclaimer, if it arrives broken, they have the option of replacing it with a refurbished unit, which basically is someone else's problem unit repaired. But I paid for a new one. Doesn't matter.
If I wanted a refurb, I could have bought one for about $50.00 not $259.00!
Will let small claims court sort it out. We consumers have had it with new products being replaced with someone else's broken/repaired ones.1 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

You will love this ereader!
by sabre3901 on June 27, 2010
Pros: Awesome device. Loads of books available at reduced price from paper/hard back editions. free books available. Constant updates for system software from B&N. Your paid for books can be read on multiple systems as well as your nook.(pc,blackberry etc)
Cons: The color screen is not quite as responsive as say the Iphone. However the latest 1.4 update has improved this and the general speed of the system.

Summary: If you want the ultimate in Ereaders than this is it. Vast B&N library to choose from. I have the original (now $199) model and it travels every were with me. The wifi only version is excellent value for money. However my advice spring the extra $40 and buy the 3g version. Nothing like downloading a book in less than 10 seconds while sitting on a beach.

Good Reader, but
by ldj1938 on June 30, 2010
Pros: Easy to read books.
Cons: Not very intuitive to use. Once you get a book installed they are easy to use. Anything else is a struggle. Software makes no sense at all. Books seems expensive to me. The public library is so much cheaper.
Summary: Check out both the Kindle and the Nook. Get a book from a library to read while you are thinking about it.

Worst device I've ever purchased
by janemycole on September 23, 2010
Pros: nothing about this product is good.
Cons: This product is totally unusable. I've had nothing but software glitches and troubleshooting since I bought it. I've owned it for a month and haven't even been able to read a book on it. It was a total waste of money.
