- Bottom Line:
- The Kobo eReader isn't a bad little basic e-book reader, but it's just not a compelling deal now that the more full-featured Barnes & Noble Nook has matched its low price.

The good: Relatively compact, lightweight, and affordable; integrates nicely with Borders e-book store; built-in Bluetooth; expansion slot for additional memory; $20 gift card bundled with unit; good battery life (up to two weeks).
The bad: No Wi-Fi or 3G wireless; somewhat generic feel to the whole device; no competitive advantage over similarly priced Barnes & Noble Nook; screen contrast could be better.
The bottom line: The Kobo eReader isn't a bad little basic e-book reader, but it's just not a compelling deal now that the more full-featured Barnes & Noble Nook has matched its low price.

There are better ones at comparable price.

Pros: Nice touch, good screen. Light weight. Good memory and has an SD slot.
Cons: Slow. I hate the navigation pad. Klick, click, click...Pretty loud and hard, like a cheap calculator.

Summary: What I like to see, is features that will let you treat it like a real book. Earmark pages, jump or flip pages and chapters, highlight text, post notes or add comments. Open where one left out right away. Speed is important.
Flipping through menus is somewhat time consuming and the whole reading experience calls for some patience.
Wi-Fi, 3G and all is not that important to me. Internet is available just about everywhere now, and just about everybody has a laptop ar a computer. I do not expect to download books daily. Cannot read them that fast.
For me, Kobo just does not have it. Chapters probably will not let me return it, and that should be mention. Very poor return policy. Anywhere else that would be no problem. -
No frills, light, comfortable, displays PDF and ePub.
by itsqa4me on August 18, 2010
Pros: Thin & light, comfortable feel, decent battery life, no frills, good basic eReader.
Cons: Screen contrast could be better, doc loads could be faster, occasional lock-ups, needs recommendations on PDF sizing for optimal display & pagination, would like a "browsing" bookmark in addition to the default "last page read" bookmark.
Summary: I like this device and hope it succeeds. It's comfortable, convenient, and a no frills alternative to the usual suspects. However, Kobo must address the limitations mentioned to continue ...

Needs improvement. Needs more features.
by dynosewer on July 15, 2010
Pros: Light, nice design, low price.
Cons: Wanted to use in the kitchen with eCookBooks. There is no way to go to a particular page. Bought one epub at Kobo Bookstore. Reader unable to read, states "Content Locked", even though device "authorized".
Summary: Makes me want to buy a real book.

Very disappointed wait for R2.
by ARandomPerson99 on July 14, 2010
Pros: Your tech illiterate parents might like it if they clean up the bugs.
Canadian Content.
Nice size and feel.Cons: Poor UI: (No easy way to jump to a page or book)
Slow: Over a minute to load a book I'm reading.
Non Kobo store Content:Very few of the epubs or PDFs I try to load actually appear on the device.
Locks Up: 5 hard lockups in 4 days of ownership.Summary: I'm returning mine and going to investigate other brands,.

Most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever used!
by frustratedkobouser on March 5, 2012
Pros: Can have (theoretically) a great number of books in one place.
Cons: The device is unreliable. The only books that load onto it without difficulty are ones bought from Kobo. Books bought from other places will show up on the computer drive as being present on the Kobo but will not appear in the Kobo library.
Summary: I would not recommend this item to anyone. It is a good idea but the Kobo as a device is a piece of garbage. I am glad I got it ...
Summary: I would not recommend this item to anyone. It is a good idea but the Kobo as a device is a piece of garbage. I am glad I got it as a present because I would have hated to have wasted my own money on this thing. I am going to send to the states and get a different device, one with a decent support staff and that actually works all the time. I will put every effort into convincing others not to buy this device!
