Kobo Vox (green) price range: $149.98

The good: The $199 Kobo Vox is a relatively affordable Android-based tablet, with a reasonably attractive design, and an expansion slot for more memory beyond its internal 8GB. Kobo's e-reading app and e-book store are integrated into the device and you also get access to GetJar for downloading free apps.
The bad: Books don't load as quickly as they should, the screen isn't incredibly responsive, the battery life is only OK, and the device ships with what appears to be a proprietary cable for charging and transferring files. There's no access to the full Android Market.
The bottom line: While it's relatively affordable, the Kobo Vox is a truly unexceptional Android tablet, with nothing to recommend it over the identically priced Kindle Fire.

Great product for Canadians
by Resa1983 on December 14, 2011
Pros: Can have Kobo & Kindle ebooks on the same ereader without having to break any DRM or fiddling.
Can change text size while in the book, as well as turn on Night mode (white text on black).
Can import .epub books from other sources into Kobo Library.Cons: I've had to do a reset of my Vox once due to corruption, which was caused by a bad install of a new app I'd downloaded. Quick reset & restart, the vox was back to normal, and downloading my books again.
Summary: While it doesn't have access to the full Android Market, you can still load thousands of apps from alternate places. Simply, the Android Market isn't really needed with ...
Summary: While it doesn't have access to the full Android Market, you can still load thousands of apps from alternate places. Simply, the Android Market isn't really needed with alternative markets and websites hosting apps.
For example, I have Android IRC, Overdrive (used for book borrowing from our Public Libraries), an alternate reader (better for PDF reading), as well as the Kindle app installed on my Kobo Vox.
Its pretty great, considering B&N won't ship the Nook to Canada & the Kindle is only available via purchasing online.
Despite rave reviews from others & tech reporters, I prefer seeing and testing tech prior to purchasing, which is what I was able to do with the Vox inside the Chapters chain.
All in all, its really a great product for Canadians, especially considering there's no decent alternative up here.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good product for Canadians
by paulsparrow on December 14, 2011
Pros: As an e-reader this does the job. Variable font and brightness is great. No problems loading books or scrolling through screens as reviews have stated. Color is great and basic added apps are good.
Cons: Unable to use Android store for apps. Hardware could have been better but still for $200 it's good. Yes much like my Android phone on occasion you swipe the screen to turn the page an it doesn't load.
Summary: Over all this is my first and only e-reader and it should be classified as such for only $200.00. As a Canadian Kindle and Nook aren't options and ...
Summary: Over all this is my first and only e-reader and it should be classified as such for only $200.00. As a Canadian Kindle and Nook aren't options and tablets are way too much. It's light, good size and does all I want it to do which is read books, newspapers and occasional surfing the web or email. My switching from print newspaper subscription to digital will have my Vox pay for itself in 11 months.

You get what you pay for.

Pros: -it has a bright screen
-it comes in a colourful box
-it gives you awards for readingCons: -much of its content comes from apps that the device cannot run properly (eg rdio, zinio)
-it doesn't support all books sold by kobo (ie adobe digital editions)
-how does reading = connecting with friends on facebook?Summary: Caveat emptor. Spend a little extra and get a proper tablet instead.
