The good: E-book reader with color touch screen; built-in Wi-Fi; access to Barnes & Noble eBook store; SD expansion slot for additional memory; Web browser and e-mail capabilities; displays images and some video formats; support for audio and MP3 playback.
The bad: Resistive touch-screen is problematic; extremely sluggish performance; interface could be more intuitive; overall user experience could be better.
The bottom line: The feature set of the affordable Pandigital Novel looks good on paper, but this color e-book reader and multimedia device is hobbled by its extremely slow performance and unresponsive touch screen.

Not worth even $100.00.

Summary: I have used six other eReader devices (iPad, Nook, Archos 7, Kobo, Sony Touch, Kindle) and this is one of the two least-desirable devices. It shouldn't be this difficult to learn to use this device or to make it actually function. A poor iPad competitor.

Great ereader for the price.
by xwovie on September 29, 2010
Pros: If you keep an eye out can get it a low as $90! dose more than read books. lots of features. easy to use. play movies, music, pitchers, and more. lot bang for buck!!!!!!!!!!!
Cons: processor is sluggish but, this is no Ipad. Screen has some glare issues. It's better if you use a stylus on the touch screen, Big lack of covers, cases, and screen shields for them. Internet is a little slow and you can't download anything.
Summary: This thing is great for the price. I got mine for $90 after sale and mail in rebate. As Ereaders go this is not to bad. The Nook was my ...
Summary: This thing is great for the price. I got mine for $90 after sale and mail in rebate. As Ereaders go this is not to bad. The Nook was my first choice but this one won due to price. I did compare it to the Ipad, Sony Reader, & the Nook. It's not flashy, have 3G, Surf the Web and compute, or been around long.
It's not a tablet computer like the Ipad but, It dose share a lot functionality and looks with it. I have heard that you can hack it (I would do this after warranty is up thou just me) to make it act more like a tablet.
It dose read a lot smoother than the Nook and Sony Reader with, a sliding or scrolling page rather than the flash over the other two have. Ipad has the page like look but is hard on the eyes. even when dimed down. The PD (Pandigital) has a night read which inverts the text colors to black back ground and white text. I asked Apple rep to show me this on Ipad. He said, "It can do this as well." , but then fail to demo this so i do not It can it.
Now the PD vs. Nook is a hard one. Nook is the easiest ereader to read hands down. I have a condition that makes reading very hard for me now and, I'm sensitive to light to boot. That being said the PD in night read Is the close 2nd. Net browsing is a pain on the Nook.
My word on the Kiddle is don't buy from a company that will steel from an author and then sales their work to thousands of others, then turns around and break into your device and steals your copy of that work back and gives you back the money you paid for it. just so Amazon doesn't have to pay the Author the Money's their due. It wrong on just so many leaves.
If you want more out of your ereader for less, then get this. It will probably cost less around Christmas time and Black Friday. Cheaper than Ipad. Dose more the Nook. Koal's usually has on sale and then on top has other discounts and special offers to Store CC customers too. if that help. Bed, Bath& Beyond sends 20% coupons out.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great pad-like product at great price
by gregmcz on September 5, 2010
Pros: 1- Color screen; 2- excellent portable photo displayer; 3- excellent book reader; 4- clearly the most versatile ebook reader available; 5- reads the two most popular formats (.epub & PDF);
Cons: Not quite an iPad equal yet: new Android OS waiting for application development although there is an online community of hackers sharing insights and making do; proprietary battery sealed inside casing - can''t replace; slow "on" startup (2-3");
Summary: WIFI works easy on my home wireless network and all public WIFI - same protocols as my other computers. Adobe built the ebook reader software and included PDF capability so, ...
Summary: WIFI works easy on my home wireless network and all public WIFI - same protocols as my other computers. Adobe built the ebook reader software and included PDF capability so, on my desktop, I convert internet content (including web pages) to PDF, then load them to Novel for later study. I spend a lot of time at gutenberg.org finding free downloads of classic books I missed in early life. Got it for $115 bed bath & beyond - delighted - had to back and buy wife one. Lots more to say but I'm out of time...

Pros: August firmware + hacks improve performance. Can open >30mb pdf files pg turn 1-2s (b/w) or 2-4s (color) , access to 32G SD card mount in 1-2min, screen response to single touch >90% of the time. Full access to android mkt.
Cons: on heavy side, would have loved it to have the 3G connection and flash capability.

Summary: Not ready to be used out of box to fully utilize device...need to spend at least half a day reading slatedroid websites to know which hacks you need. Hacks can be completed about half an hour.
With internal SD card replaced with 8G and external 32G, it is 40G on the Go ebook for me.
At less than $170 usd and with some determination, this is an adequate (to me) ebook reader + tablet (albeit without flash). No regrets......not sure i would upgrade to a tablet that has 3G/GPS/Wifi at 3 times the cost as a smartphone does these functions way better (ergonomically speaking). I would only use this to read books and the occasional videos.
If you can get it for <$150, GO FOR IT....1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Bottom line, it's worth the money
by davparker on August 18, 2010
Pros: I like the resistive touch screen. Works great with my prosthetic hook, very responsive, capacitive screens don't work period. WiFi works well. The B&N app syncs without issue. Nice web browser, photo viewer, mp3 & mp4 support and access to e-mail
Cons: Lacks flash, can't play Youtube. Needs access to Android Marketplace. Battery life could be better. Mysteriously, can't be used as a digital picture frame while charging because it hibernates after 10 minutes.
Summary: This device is well worth the $180 I spent. I use the reader almost every night. Good for light web surfing but really needs support for Flash and access to ...

Update the firmware before using it as there have been many bug fixes since it shipped. It hasn't locked up yet since flashing it.

Summary: I have been holding off on purchasing an e-reader until a color version was available with the ability to read in the dark without use a of light. After doing some research it not appear that the device I wanted was going to hit the market in the next 6 -12 months, some people say maybe later in 2011. I did not want to spend a lot of money on something I knew I would be replacing in less then 2 years.
I had seen the Pandigital Novel advertise around the 4th of July in a Bed bath and Beyond flyer and was interested based on the fact that was a 7" color screen and the price was right. I did some surfing and did not find very much in way of reviews and opinions on the device. I did find a few and they seemed to be equally split between positive and negative opinions. I saw that it was released in May and had to be recalled due to some bug in the software but that it had been fixed and re-released. I was skeptical after reading the few reviews that I found and decided to wait until there were more opinions available.
On July 28th I read the first eight reviews on Cnet and that gave me enough confidence to purchase one, so I did get one on July 29th.
First, I did buy it at Bed Bath and Beyond. The retail price was $169.99 -- you can use their 20% coupons on this item and through a purchase date of 8/15/10 there is an additional $20 mail in rebate from Pandigital. So when all is said and done the device will cost me $125.
Also, I bought it knowing I could easily return it to the retailer if necessary - I checked with the store to be certain.
WOW, I am so happy with it.
Knowing that all I wanted was a device that I could read books and publications on. I did not go into it expecting some amzaing Ipad like thing where I could run a lot of programs with blazing speed. I got exactly what I was looking for and am so glad I purchased it.
I was tired of buying paper copies of books and when done reading them, trying tofind a place to store them -- I have bags of books sitting in a closet taking up space. Also, I have two young dogs who love to eat books --- I have left one or two on a kitchen table and they always seem to find them.
I am now able to purchase new release books at a paperback price. I would typcially wait to purchase a new book if it was only available in hard cover ($20+), I just bought a brand new book last night for $9.99 it was GREAT, I no longer feel the need to wait for the soft cover version with a lesser price tag.
I cannot say enough good things about the Pandigital novel --- if you have realistic expectations you will be very pleased with it.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

The price is OK, but not the features
by euphoria64 on August 20, 2010
Pros: It has an internet browser and colorful. Also reads books... at least.
Cons: WAY too slow, needs more features in internet, touch screen and keyboard are funky, too heavy and bulky, the sound quality sucks, needs the Android Marketplace in order to get more apps, freezes too much, to much glare, battery sucks and much more!
Summary: When I was buying a e-reader, I had two options: the Pandigital or Nook. How stupid I was when I chose the Pandigital! I was expecting such great features and ...
Summary: When I was buying a e-reader, I had two options: the Pandigital or Nook. How stupid I was when I chose the Pandigital! I was expecting such great features and also anticipated it to be really fast in speed. But it didn't. Yes, it had a really low price with a coupon and rebate, but I really hated this thing. Everything sucked in this junk. I should've chosen the Nook or even the newest Kindle instead. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

NOT worth the $125 I paid for it
by johnseanconn on August 18, 2010
Pros: So much potential.
Cons: Buggy. Poorly designed. Crappy UI. Frustrating, unusable browser. Difficult to connect WI-FI. Unreliable.

Summary: Mine died on the 14th day I owned it - that pretty much says it all. You find yourself hoping it will turn on this time without locking up and needing a paperclip to reset it. The power button is a poorly designed slider type (why not have a basic simple On/Off switch?) where you slide it the same way to turn it both on and off.
The WI-FI would only connect when ALL security on my home network was turned off, and even then it was slow a mere few feet away from the router.
The web browser was a joke to use - the zoom feature may or may not work, random links clicked other than the ones I really clicked, it sometimes would not go into landscape mode.
The e-reader was buggy - sometimes the font would set correctly, and sometimes not, sometimes landscape mode worked and sometimes not, sometimes a page would turn forward and sometimes it would turn backward. It basically did what it wanted to do.
The entire UI was unintuitive and poorly designed. Like some first-year programmer did the job. There were times the keyboard came up when I did not want it to and I couldn't get rid of it without loading a random utility to get the screen to change.
You get the idea. This product is not ready for primetime. This product is for those who like spending time coaxing a device to work properly (remember all of the tweaking you had to do with DOS and early Windows computers?) and even then it still won?t really work properly. All I wanted to do was read books, which is Pandigital's main selling point for this device, and it was a pain to read them on this device. Plain and simple, I recommend you do not buy this device.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

TAP SCREEN like an old Palm Pilot - NOT a TOUCH screen
by TokayGirl on January 1, 2012
Pros: Love the white plastic frame, greate size, color on display looks good. Only buy on sale if you have a very limited budget, all the time in the world, don't mind tapping on the screen with your fingernail, and are very tech savvy.
Cons: Touch screen is "resistive" touch - like on the old Palm Pilots so you have to tap on the screen with your fingernail or a stylis to navigate and to turn pages on the ereader. Slow. Cannot connect to the Google Apps Marketpalce without hack.

Summary: This is a TAP screen device (resistive touch) not a touch screen device. I was getting nowhere trying to navigate the tablet after my step daughter set it up for me with the Android hack.
Tapping the screen with my fingernail is very irritating to me so I dug around in my desk drawer and found an old Palm Pilot stylus in the very back. Tapping with the stylus worked much better than tapping with my fingernail, but even then navigation in and out of apps and in the ereader was not perfect. Sometimes I just couldn't get to where I wanted to be. Tapping did work very well to enter text in my Craigslist app, so if text, email and occasional web surfing are what you want to do with the tablet you may be OK with the tap screen using a stylus. But tapping with my fingernail to turn pages in the ereader was irritating and I didn't want to hold a stylus while reading; that's not relaxing. I couldn't get the highlighting function to work on the ereader and finally gave up. This tap screen tablet is going to be returned to the store latter today.
Only buy this if you really can't afford a touch screen tablet, are tech savvy enough to do the Android hack and fix any bugs, can deal with a slow response (hey, that used to be the norm) and don't expect the world out of it. DO NOT buy it for an older friend or relative as a way to check email. They'll be too frustrated with the navigation and spotty responsiveness.
One thing I do love about this tablet is the look. White is so much prettier than black for a plastic frame. (Hello, manufacturers, are you listening? No more black plastic and no more tiny buttons on electronics.) I also liked the size - just right to hold in your hands. The color screen was better than I expected, too. I can't comment on the battery life because, after set-up by my tech assistant, I recharged the battery and decided to return it after wasting 45 minutes tapping on the thing!
