The good: Responsive touch-screen interface with no glare or contrast issues; high-contrast 7-inch E-Ink Pearl display; both Wi-Fi and 3G wireless connectivity; zippier performance than its predecessor; integration with Sony e-book store; good battery life (up to 22 days); supports EPUB e-book standard, which enables e-book downloads from libraries and other third parties; audio capabilities; SD and Memory Stick Duo memory expansion slots; charges via Micro-USB port.
The bad: Expensive compared with the competition; Sony online store isn't as robust as Amazon's; Sony Reader app not available on many other platforms; no protective cover included.
The bottom line: Sony's flagship e-reader, the Daily Edition PRS-950, is a capable, well-designed e-reader that offers both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity--but at $300, it's too expensive.

Simply the best.
by aaevenson on November 13, 2010
Pros: Great screen, no eye strain, quick page refresh, ability to browse the web (wifi) and shop for books anywhere with 3G access, feels sturdy but light in your hand, touch screen is very precise and just right.
Cons: Well, if you read a lot of Where's Waldo or Clifford the Big Red Dog, you may want a color screen from a different brand.
Summary: After holding and using the Kindle 3, Nook and Sony's various models, this is the clear choice. Kindle never really was a choice for me because I wanted the ...
Summary: After holding and using the Kindle 3, Nook and Sony's various models, this is the clear choice. Kindle never really was a choice for me because I wanted the ability to borrow and download library books for free, which I have already tried and works great! This is a much sturdier feeling product and seems to have a bit more finesse than the nook. Of course, it's also much more expensive. It was a great birthday gift!

10 Steps away from becoming the ULTIMATE READING DEVICE
by Biswaspeaks on February 24, 2012
Pros: PDF handling, 7 inch screen just perfect for PDF reading yet portable, ePub, Stylus fitted with device, Expandable memory, Design-metal casing
Cons: Very much Overpriced, AT&T 3G restricted only in USA, Slow processing, OS glitches, less Titles in Reader Store, Web Browser hassles, Less battery life compared to competition
Summary: I think this device is just 10 steps away from becoming the Ultimate Reading Device. Here is a wish-list or product ideas to make that happen:

1. To be the ULTIMATE READING DEVICE, it has to champion in all three form of reading: Books, Magazine/Newspapers, Internet. Should have much faster web browsing, Email reading capability including attachments. Social Media integration like Facebook/Twitter.
2. E-ink Triton colour display is MUST HAVE for next version. There are already colour e-Readers like Hanvon.
3. More refined and faster PDF experience with partial page refresh, readability of Scientific articles having multiple graphs, charts, diagrams. Notes made on books(including PDFs) should be viewable in other devices as well.
4. Bunch of Default Apps like Kindle app, Notes, Calendar, Meeting organizer, Stock Ticker etc. A few default games like Sudoku, Crosswords, Poker, Chess, Packman would be just nice
5. Text to speech (better punctuated than kindle) feature, so that user can continue with her novel while running at treadmill.
6. Expand Reader Store, Add more titles, add more Free titles as well. Make Reader Store available to Asia. Launch this Product in Asia before competitors worth-mentioning do so.
7. Motion Sensor/Accelerometer : Landscape to Portrait mode and vice verse on rotation of device
8. Carrier independent Internationally available 3G in addition to Wi-Fi.
9. Keep same metal finish sturdy build, but make appearance mat-finished grey and white. Keep weight within 250 grams
10. Competitively Price it within US$ 175.This will help wide adoption of this product specially among students, who has to read scientific articles in pdf and 7 inch screen is much much better than 6 inch screen without losing on portability and ability to hold in just one hand. -

Absolutely superb!
by newuser1234 on July 8, 2011
Pros: Everything: 7 inch screen in the size of a Nook or Kindle, awesome PDF support (supports panning and zoom), great IR touch interface, free 3G support, built in audio support to play music while you read (requires headphones), WIFI support and web browser,
Cons: Not much. The PDF support is awesome. It can do scientific journals, textbooks, math formulas, etc... without hiccups. However, I have found some unusual novellas on PDF that have caused the ebook reader software to slow to molasses. I don't understan

Summary: Very good. You shouldn't even think about a Kindle or Nook or Kobo touch. I've tried them all and none have been satisfactory. This is the ebook reader I've been waiting for. It would be nice to eventually see very large scale ebook readers with IR touch. I would love to see a 10" ebook reader from Sony with IR touch. Although, weight could be an issue.

Nice improvement over 900 Model
by shablap on March 14, 2011
Pros: No glare, able set screen settings, light, thin, easy to read, etc.
Cons: $$$$, NO LIGHT OR COVER OF ANY SORT! That is a big problem and you cannot by a cover with a light built in like with the previous model, the 900.
Summary: This is a great device, the others are all to juicy for me. Too much fluff. Sony keeps their mouth shut and just produces a good product. I think the ...
Summary: This is a great device, the others are all to juicy for me. Too much fluff. Sony keeps their mouth shut and just produces a good product. I think the touch edition would satisfy most, but then you don't have wireless, that is No Good!
Support them, they need the money since the earthquake. -
I like my Daily Edition a LOT -- BUT....
by keltoid22 on January 9, 2011
Pros: I love my prs- its wonderful, I love the bigger fonts and I blaze through a book!
Cons: One thing that really bugs me.Why does everyone say the contrast is so great - it isnt!-the background is GRAY! No matter how I fix the contrast, it is still GRAY.Book pages are whiter. If we had the choice to make it whiter, it would be PERFECT.
Summary: Sony: send us an update in the software where the contrast can be brighter/whiter background, please!! That's it -- the rest is GREAT. This is such a basic, ...
Summary: Sony: send us an update in the software where the contrast can be brighter/whiter background, please!! That's it -- the rest is GREAT. This is such a basic, important thing -- it should be fixed!!!
Just want to add here I still love it. Book reading is fun again. I still think I should've gotten a back lit reader, my 55 year old eyes are annoyed by the grayness of the page. Also, sometimes it freezes and takes some time to turn a page when you first start it up. Then it gets going and goes ahead about 5 pages because you have tried to turn the page 5 times with no luck.

Works great!!
by lepto on November 14, 2010
Pros: Lightweight, uses microsd or memory stick to expand memory, uses standard epub format, large reading area, touch screen, can use stylus or keyboard to write notes in the margins, easy to read and operate.
Cons: Doesn't come with a case (for $300 you would think Sony could have added something for basic protection), touch screen can be slow to react to touch when browsing the web, no hard-copy owner's manual forcing one to switch back and forth on ereader.
Summary: This is my first ereader so I'm a newbie but I have to say I love my Sony PRS-950! It weighs about the same as the Kindle or the ...
Summary: This is my first ereader so I'm a newbie but I have to say I love my Sony PRS-950! It weighs about the same as the Kindle or the Nook but it has a large touchscreen display and the memory is expandable up to 32gb. I made the decision to go for e-ink as opposed to buying an ipad or waiting for the Nook Color because I didn't want the backlight that comes with color screens. So far I haven't been disappointed with my choice. The e-ink is crisp, sharp, easy to read and easy on the eyes. The touchscreen is very responsive when reading a book but can be a little slow to react when using the web browser. The controls are fairly intuitive and, where they are not, they are easy to learn using the owner's manual. Clearly this ereader isn't competing with the ipad but then it weighs less than ten ounces where the ipad weighs in at a hefty pound and a half. I do wish Sony had included a hard copy owner's manual with the ereader as jumping back and forth between the preloaded owner's manual and the book or collection you are working with can be a little bit of a pain. The Sony uses the epub format so you can download books from Sony, Barnes & Noble or the public library without the necessity of converting your downloads. If you do need to convert books to epub you can use Calibre to do the conversions and it is already configured to manage your library.
These are just my first impressions of the Sony. So far, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it over the Kindle or the Nook. If you want a great black & white ereader with a touch screen and expansion slots for loads of memory then the Sony PRS-950 is for you!
