The good: With its sharp 5-inch screen, the Sony Reader Pocket Edition is much more compact than the Kindle 2 and fits comfortably in one hand when reading; font size is adjustable; decent battery life; Sony's eBook Library software is now both Windows- and Mac-compatible, with best sellers costing $9.99 (just like Amazon); Epub file compatibility lets you access thousands of free classic Google Books and loaner files from many local libraries; also displays Word and PDF files.
The bad: No expandable memory; battery is sealed into unit; screen may be too small for some people; limited zoom function with PDF files; cannot display JPEGs or play back MP3 files; not as zippy as the step-up PRS-600; USB charging only works from PCs.
The bottom line: While Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-300 has a basic feature set, its $200 price tag, compact size, and Epub file compatibility make it an appealing e-book reader.

I love this reader!!!!
by asfults on August 17, 2010
Pros: I was running out of places to put y books, so I bought this reader. I couldn't be happier. There's plenty of memory on it. I love that I can get the free older books from google and borrow books from the library. It's been great. I really love it!
Cons: I wish it came with the wall charger instead of the usb charger. I also would like sony to come up with a nicer case that has a light on it.
Summary: If you want to read books, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS READER!!!! The price it amazing. It's simle to use. Font can be easily changed to a ...

Good, but not great
by AtinOrdo on August 16, 2010
Pros: The portability, and the display are very good. The display does not hurt your eyes even after hours of reading and it fits nicely in your pocket.
Cons: The speed of the device leaves something to be desired. When switching between books it has a long lag time between button push and something happening. Also has this issue when there is an illustration in the book.
Summary: For $150, you might be better off buying the Nook, but if you can find it on sale and want to go cheap, get it.

POOR POOR POOR Garbage for tech support. buy a KINDLE
by njbigdog on July 23, 2010
Pros: I would not use one of these if it was given to me.
Cons: I ran into a simple problem with the activation of my unit. I called they said nobody there could help me but they would call back within 2 days....guess what ...never called back.

Summary: Tech support is TERRIBLE. They could not help me I recalled them after a week and they were to call back...never called back. Tonight I called them again and spent over a half hour trying to get Charlie to transfer me to a supervisor and he refused. Back to the store in the mornig. The unit might actually work but the frustration dealing with their tech support is soooooooo not worth it.

My first leap into eReaders ... I am pleasantly happy
by jszernick on July 19, 2010
Pros: Great battery life, easily readable screen, decent software, many options for books both free and for a fee. I like the bookmarking function since I tend to read a number of different books at the same time.
Cons: I am frustrated by the fact that eBooks I've purchased in the past do not work on my pocket reader. I wish that I could purchase at a fee the E version for paper books I own, especially technology books that I'd like to carry with me for reference.
Summary: Love the portability, lending books from the Library and the good price

Summary: I bought two of these the same day (one for my wife). We both travel extensively and hate the room required for more than one book. I recently used this little sony on a trip to China and the Philippines and was extremely happy. It is so small and lightweight that I can literally slip it into my jacket pocket.

Good eReader to take on vacation along with ur Netbook
by Bold_Sue on March 17, 2010
Pros: -light wgt & size compares to a paperback book
-good battery life
-screen is readable though becomes grey & fadded in low light or sunlight
-button are easy to use
-3 font sizes + one more when u go landscape by holding the font buttonCons: -PDF & ePUB formats can not reside together on eReader
-u need a PC or laptop to charge it
-unit freezes sometimes when I am flipping a page (many buttons got pressed simultaneously while using the wheel?)
-delay while flipping pg

-I always have a PC ...Summary: Bottom line is that I like the size of this unit and it totally replaces my paperback books.
Most of the disadvantages have work arounds:
-I always have a PC or Netbook with me so I can charge the unit.
-If I have both PDF and ePUB books, then I load the PDF books and hold the ePUB books on the Netbook. When I am done with the PDF books, then I delete these from the eReader, then load the ePUB books for example.
-If the eReader freezes, then pushing the reset button and turning the eReader OFF, then ON clears this up. IN FACT, as a bonus for your effort, pushing the reset eliminates the expiry dates on your borrowed books! As borrowed books typically expire in 21 days it can be a race to finish reading a book before it expires. The reset gives me about 450 days to read the books. This stays until you have to reload the battery. At this point it tries to synch with the "Reader Library" software on the PC which brings back the real expiry dates. To get around this, plug the eReader into another PC that does not have the "Reader Library" software or temporarily rename the folder of your "Reader Library" software to deactivate it. When I am done reading the borrowed eBook, I delete it.
-the delay while flipping pages can be ignored if you press to flip page as soon as you start reading the last line. By the time the new page shows up, you have finished reading this last line and are ready to continue reading on the next page.
-This unit is tough! I dropped it and it fell 3 feet onto a cement floor. It survived with just a small dent on a corner.
-What I hate the most is the fact that I can't load PDFs and ePUB format books simultaneously. To get around this, when I borrow books from the library, I try to select books with PDF formats as I find these open and flip pages faster than the ePUB formats. I have never purchased eBooks, so I can't comment about that aspect.
Would I give up my Sony eReader PRS-300? No, no, no! I don't even have to physically go to my local library anymore! I love it! -
Good quality. Perfect for what I need.
by mmontgomery1203 on March 7, 2010
Pros: Lightweight, easy to read screen, library access for free downloads, wide selection on sony's ebook site, free download on google for ebooks.
Cons: The price. I still feel $200 is steep for this product. They really should cut it down to $150.
Summary: Good product, works how it says it will, but really needs to be about $50 cheaper.

Summary: For a first tme user/buyer of an e-reader, I find the Sony very easy to use. I managed to download all the e-books I had on my computer onto the device without any problems. With some e-books not purchased through the Sony e-reader store, the 'page' formatting can be a bit loopy if you have to adjust the text/font size to medium or large, but it's a minor issue. (Paragraphs and lines of dialogue run together, sometimes makes it difficult to define who is speaking). I also like the fact that you can change the orientation of the screen from horizontal to vertical. That also helps with the font sizes, which on some e-books can be quite small. All in all, not bad for the price. How else can you carry around tons of books? I currently have about 80 e-books loaded on it and I can fit tons more if the need arises. Fits neatly into the side pocket of my purse. I've already recommended this to a few friends who were shopping around for an e-reader. I

Excellent no frills ereader.
by crick127 on January 16, 2010
Pros: The contrast is exceptional. Good layout, very intuitive. The styling is nice, its not plastic so it does not look cheap. Wireless really not necessary, what emergency could you possibly have to download a book whey this carries hundreds.
Cons: Even though it is entry level, a dictionary would really be nice.

Summary: This reader is very good for what it does, just reading ebooks. I don't see the point in needing an internet connection since with the browser (like the one on the kindle) you really don't get much use out of it. Really when you carry hundreds of books why would you all of a sudden need to download one instantly. For reading books, this thing is great.
