The good: Lots of clean-sounding inputs and outputs; remote control; supports Dolby Digital 5.1; serious software suite.
The bad: Doesn't output Dolby 5.1 digitally (through an optical digital output) to home-theater systems.
The bottom line: This external sound card works great for watching DVDs, listening to tunes, or recording audio on your computer.

caused more problems than it fixed
Pros: It seemed like a good idea at the time and it sound nice.
Cons: Conflicts with about every program on the computer. Used the newest upgrades from creative. My CD-Rs burned before the Extigy now drop out and skip when played though they never did before. CD-Rs recorded (Roxio Disc Copy) have skips and won't play on

Other than mp3 playback, horrible soundcard
Pros: good quality mp3 playback, makes the few 63mbps wma files sound like 128mbps mp3s
Cons: System crashes galore with my amd athlon xp2100+/win 2k pro system. Updated drivers and firmware and still crashes. Impossible to work with when using my cakewalk sonar 2.0, and I can't even browse cd's without my system crashing. Tried lowering hardwa

Good sound, terrible compatibility.
Pros: External inputs and connectors; reasonable ergonomics; very good sound quality (by non-professional standards); variety of speaker outputs; remote control; fairly easy to install
Cons: Giant unwieldy AC adapter; USB port wiggles loose over time; seems to crash every Microsoft operating system known to humankind; zero product or technical support

Summary: I've had an Extigy for about a year now and have used it in a number of configurations. I use the Extigy primarily to conserve PCI slots within a 1u Dell server, and I use the system to stream MP3 files over my home network. A few observations to the positive: * The optical out capability is ideal. I use it to uplink the Extigy to my A/V receiver. The link may not be true digital signaling from the source, but it's very close. * The remote control feature is a Godsend. I only use it for volume up/down and power on/off, but you'd be surprised just how convenient a remote can be for just these few features. * Computer speakers work with the device, as well. I, too, noticed a crackling sound from time to time with a set of Klipsch 5.1 speakers. After blowing two sets, it was pretty easy to fault the speakers and not the Extigy (note: you should do yourself a favor if you're an audiophile, anyhow, & resist the temptation to buy the cheaper computer speakers). A few observations to the negative: * Never turn the Extigy off unless you enjoy rebooting to restore sound. * The mandatory requirement to use Creative's MP3 player for the remainder of the remote control's features is rather lame. Give it up, Creative...we love MusicMatch & aren't about to change now. * Occasional conflicts with other USB peripherals do come about. However, you'll be pleased to find the Extigy always wins in a conflict with other devices! This product is simply ideal. If you are thinking about using a 1u server as a streaming device for audio/video but aren't sure 1 1/2 PCI slots are enough to accomplish what you have in mind, take comfort in the fact that the Extigy avoids consuming the full-height PCI socket with a standard sound card. Kudos, Creative!

Summary: I use it for my laptop and my desktop. Had problems in the beginning, it would pop and dvd playback was horrible. On my desktop I disabled my soundcard on the motherboard in the bios and now it seems to work fine. My Laptop does not have that option, so I disabled the original soundcard in windows and it seems to work fine now. Overall I really like this product.
