LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini with Gigabit Ethernet (500GB) price range: $213.60

The good: Gigabit Ethernet port; USB port for connecting additional hard drives; UPnP media server; backup software included.
The bad: Read/write times could use some improvement.
The bottom line: The LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini is a decent NAS drive for a good price. If you need more features or faster performance, look elsewhere.
The LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini is a compact network-attached storage device. It is designed for the home user who doesn't need high performance: it delivers middle-of-the-road performance when reading and writing files over a local network. With a Gigabit Ethernet port, a USB port for direct connection, UPnP-based media server functionality, and a second USB port for storage expansion, the drive offers a wide range of connectivity and uses. At $300 for the 500GB version, it's fairly priced compared to the competition. If you need faster data transfer speeds and don't need the media serving capabilities, consider the comparably priced Ximeta NetDisk Portable. And if you'd like even more features such as RAID capability and a built-in print server, take a look at the slightly more expensive (per-gigabyte, that is) HP Media Vault MV2010.

Slow as Molasses & Noisy

Pros: Case Design
Cons: Slow as Molasses & Noisy
Summary: This drive is so slow that I ended up stopping the 250 gig transfer, deleted the incomplete files, unplugged all cables, boxed it up and sent it back.

This company does not deserve to be in business.
by GeoNomad on November 27, 2009
Pros: 1 month since I bought it and I still can't get music from the server to my iPod.
Cons: Support sucks. Product sucks. Software is worse than that.

Summary: All I wanted was a networked hard drive. Instead I have something that gets in the way of everything I want to do. Came with no CD. No way to download setup software. Wait for it to come in the mail. Configuration was a nightmare. Now it works with the PC, but iPod just tells me about the music and won't play it. I have spent hours make that days on this piece of crap.

Disk: ok, software: um... not good at all
by misterdom on March 20, 2009
Pros: The hardware is ok and the disk worked fine for me as a networked shared drive.
Cons: The HipServ software from Axentra is probably one of the useless and worst designed software I ever got to see. The backup software works only once in a while, which leaves you with a "great" feeling for a BACKUP software!
Summary: Don't buy it unless LaCie drops HipServ or unless you want to hack it and install your own software.

LaCie doesn't care about customers
by jtr716 on November 26, 2008
Pros: Stands vertically for better shelf space
Cons: Poor construction and horrible support.
Summary: After mechanical failure and complete data loss, LaCie effectively said "that's too bad." I'll never buy another LaCie product!!

Hard drive died after 6 months
by jpcamilleri on October 25, 2008
Pros: How can you like a hard drive that dies on you.
Cons: One day it decided to stop being a hard drive.
Summary: Can't believe LaCie would put out such an unreliable drive. Last time I buy something from them.

God awful slow. Too expensive at any price!
by jaybee2005 on August 10, 2008
Pros: La Cie normally makes great products. Reliable.
Cons: Transfer rate is way too slow.
Summary: God awful slow. Too expensive at any price! Normally I give La Cie products high marks but this device is simply too slow to be useful as a network drive.

Summary: configuration and the user interface are somewhat straightforward for a tech savy user. Do not plan on using as a routine network backup device, or to back up to another external drive as it is horribly slow. The USB interface is strange and problematic: Windows XP config failed every time on three different PC and there is nothing available for MAC. Their ,'Configurator' doesn't work with Leopard, yet their OS9 version does.
It's cheap temporary thow-away technology that effectively stores and play my music and video collection.
