Summary: Buyer had to understand that this model "LaCie Safe Mobile" harddisk store data on the harddisk without encryption. So while it really looks cool to require biometric to activiate the disk drive, if you are not very careful, someone can remove the entire drive (Well, it is VERY mobile), dismount the IDE drive and read the data off using another IDE controller cable. LaCie does have a new offering (pre-order and to be available in Jan 2006). See http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10691

Great device
by petebull on October 23, 2005
Pros: 1st level security, portable and affordable
Cons: None so far
Summary: This drive (with biometric security) was at the same price than other portable drives (without security) so it was like getting some security features for free.

I noticed that the other user who rated this drive "1", also rated another LaCie drive "1" the day before, with pretty much the same text. Looks like some fake bad reviews from some competitors...1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

La Cie drive blows. I hope I can recover somehow.

Summary: MY LACIE 80 g DRIVE STOPPED WORKING WITHOUT WARNING. Power light comes on but no spinning or "whirr." Lost entire computer life - and I mean years of EVERYTHING, after storing everything in preparation for an upgrade. And I was worried about my 10 year old Maxtor internal drive, which is performing like a Pro. Pray for me.

A nightmare - not ready for primetime

Cons: Does not work, loses data, support poor, data not really secure

Summary: Its the first of its kind from a company that's usually good in my experience but this is a horrible drive. The data is not encrypted so not really that secure except from the user when the biometrics don't work. But anyone can take apart the drive and get at the information. So now that mine can't be accessed biomterically (worked for about two weeks intermittently, now not working for threemonths), the only way I can get support is to send back a drive with potential secure data onboard. If I open the drive to destroy the data, the warranty won't apply. Awful!

Drive pooch'd my data, too...

Summary: Well, I've NEVER had to complain about LaCie before, also like I've NEVER had to complain about Apple. But due to a power glitch on my iBook, I lost over 40GB data. Thankfully I had backups on DVD and only lost minimal data. LaCie's techsupport issued me a timely reply but of no use and data was not recovered as a result. At least my drive is with them and hopefullly recoverable. And if not, Alas! Hopefully I'll score another drive in any event. Either way, stick with media. These drives are dubious -- I'm also having probs with the 40GB mobile too. These are about as touchy as the Iomega Jaz drives back in the day...
