Terrible- The box gives false information
by rp3225441 on March 4, 2008

Maxtor/Seagate customer service says this is not true. It will not back up email & hidden files.
The box says "simple back up". Their customer service says this is true as long as you don't need everything backed up.
The information on the box is false. I was a Maxtor fan... no more. Do not buy this unit!6 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

The software is crap!
by Jim Rand on December 2, 2008
Pros: Looks nice. It's easy to do a backup by pressing the button on the case
Cons: The backups are not reliable. Specifically, if you have one file that you repeatedly backup (like your most important database file), after the 10th time, it stops backing up. Plus with the latest update, SyncServices.exe fails on system shutdown.
Summary: Backup software / devices MUST BE 100% reliable. The software for this device clearly fails this test. I have uninstalled the Maxtor software and plan to physically destroy the device.

Summary: I use this drive at work to back up my data. I really like the fact that it spins down after about 10mins of no activity but remains mounted to the computer. This lets it consume less power and increase the drive lifetime and be easily accessible remotely.

Terrible...horrible....useless
by vegivory on September 26, 2010
Pros: It hasn't caught on fire yet....that's a good thing.
Cons: This drive has been nothing but trouble since I first bought it. Either my computer can't find it or the files I'm storing on it keep getting corrupted and so I have to run a very lengthly checkdisk to fix it. This happens about twice a week!!
Summary: Avoid Maxtor drives...they just aren't worth the hassle!

Don't purchase if you want worry-free backup

Summary: I am not the kind of guy that frequently posts reviews of products on Amazon or elsewhere. In fact, I think this is the first (or maybe second to give myself the benefit of a doubt) review I have ever posts. I do, however, rely on other people's reviews when making a product selection.
Hence, I really must caution anyone from purchasing any Maxtor or Seagate external hard drive.
I have purchased three hard drives from them and have had the same experience with all three. After about a year give or take a couple of months, ALL of drives have simply failed with an internal electrical fault. The most recent one was today. This wouldn't have been such a big problem if I had discovered the failure of my hard drive backup BEFORE my iMac decided to throw a fit and require a reload of OS X. I have to tell you that, while the drives (all different models) seemed like a good deal at the time I was shopping through CostCo, whatever money I saved is not worth the incredible frustration I feel right now. All I can do is close the doors and windows and vent how well pissed off I am with a very loud Sh#$!!!
Lesson learned. Sometimes is little extra money is well spent....especially on data backup!!! -
What a horrible mistake this purchase was.
by DGrant2561 on May 17, 2009
Pros: Price for 750 GB suckered me in.
Cons: After backing up three separate computers completely, the drive has failed. The light goes on, the disk spins, but it then locks up any computer that it is attached to. Computer Management recognizes the drive but then locks up as well.
Summary: A call to Seagate/Maxtor yielded the recommendation that I send it back. Right, with all my personal information on it including account information, passwords, etc. I think not. They ...
Summary: A call to Seagate/Maxtor yielded the recommendation that I send it back. Right, with all my personal information on it including account information, passwords, etc. I think not. They have no utilities that they will send you nor will they recommend any data recovery software specifically. I was going to buy the Western Digital MyBook external hard drive based upon other recommendations and I should have listened.
