The good: Great read/write speeds; supports RAID 0, 1, 5; drives are hot-swappable; comes with backup software; includes print, DHCP, and file servers; compatible with UPnP media devices; generous warranty.
The bad: It's pricey.
The bottom line: The Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ offers a lot in the way of features and performance, which is good, because it's expensive.
Editors' note: We have adjusted the rating of this product based on its features and performance in comparison with other products in this sector.
The Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ network-attached storage drive offers fast read and write speeds, loads of features, backup software, and a slick design--for a price. It's among the more expensive NAS drives we've looked at, but it's functional and easy to use, making it easier for us to recommend it for home and small office users.
The ReadyNAS NV+ comes in five flavors. Each model has four drive bays, filled to different capacities. The RND4000 comes empty, allowing you to fill it with your choice of SATA or SATA-II drives. The RND4425 has four 250GB drives, the RND4250 comes with two 500GB drives and two empty drive bays, the RND4275 has two 750GB drives and two empty drive bays, and the RND4450 comes with four 500GB drives. We tested the RND4425, which offers a total of 1TB of storage--four hot-swappable, 250GB Seagate hard drives. Housed in a shiny, rugged aluminum case, the ReadyNas NV+ is capable of managing the hard drives in three different RAID configurations: 0, 1, and 5. You can also configure it in X-RAID, Netgear's proprietary RAID configuration that automates volume expansion as you add drives or swap out drives for larger ones. Suggested pricing is as follows:
| RND4000 (0TB) | $900 |
| RND4250 (1TB, 2x500GB w/ 2 empty bays) | $1,100 |
| RND4425 (1TB, 4x250GB) | $1,100 |
| RND4275 (1.5TB, 2x750GB w/ 2 empty bays) | $1,500 |
| RND4450 (2TB, 4x500GB) | $1,600 |
The ReadyNAS NV+ can be hooked directly to a network via Gigabit Ethernet connection or connected directly to a computer via USB 2.0. You can also use the three USB ports to connect printers, and flash and hard disk drives as backup sources or destinations, or expand the storage by connecting USB storage devices. It can stream media to UPnP-compliant AV devices and function as a file, DHCP, and print server.
It was easy and straightforward to get the ReadyNAS NV+ set up to our test network with the help of the included software. We were able to detect and configure the drive with just a few clicks of the mouse. Once set up, backup can be automated or you can manually start the process by pressing on the Backup button on the front of the device.

Netgear's site also provides downloadable software and manuals. |
The ReadyNAS NV+ performed very well in CNET Labs' timed data transfer tests. It wrote the 5GB test file of mixed file types in 18 minutes, 10 seconds. It read the same file back in 13 minutes, 53 seconds. Its read speed was the fastest we've clocked for a NAS drive, and its write speed was behind only those of the Iomega StorCenter Pro 150d and the HP Media Vault MV2020.

A well rounded integrated package that does the job

Pros: Reliable, well constructed, and well done software
Cons: Real world network throughput
Summary: I have had a ReadyNAS NV+ for several months. It is populated with 4 500 GB drives. Available storage is about 1.4 TB.

Set up is very simple but one must be patient as drives are added to allow for the redundancy hamsters to spin their wheels.
The web administration interface is well done and clear. The provided utility, RAIDAR, is useful during set-up, but once the ReadyNAS is set up RAIDAR does not need to be used much, if at all.
I have not experienced a drive failure so I cannot review a key feature, the redundancy capability of XRaid.
The device is on a gigabit network with actual real world speeds of about 70 megabits per second. I am disappointed with this as I have read others reporting as much as 300 megabits per second. However, my speed is almost double the speed reported in the CNET review. So I can't complain too much.
My back up strategy (how I use the ReadyNAS) is to back up daily to a local hard drive, then weekly to the ReadyNAS.

Specifications
- Manufacturer: NetGear Inc.
- Part number: RND4250-100NAS
- Description: ReadyNAS NV+ was designed specifically for home offices, small businesses and workgroups. Never before has there been available a cost-conscience Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance packed with robust high-end server features, including Gigabit Ethernet, hardware RAID, system monitoring capabilities and built-in backup. ReadyNAS couples out of the box deployment and easy management with robust file serving and data redundancy. With an easy web browser interface and setup wizard, ReadyNAS can be configured with minimal effort - saving you valuable time. Traditional file servers can take hours to configure and, even once up and running, don't have built-in system monitoring and email alerts. Available with ReadyNAS, automatic alerts give you the peace of mind that things are running smoothly because if trouble should arise, you will be notified. Supporting hardware accelerated RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) levels 0, 1, 5 and ReadyNAS's own X-RAID technology, ReadyNAS ensures full data redundancy with protection against hardware failure - something previously only available in high end servers. If one drive fails, the data volumes can still be rebuilt with the remaining drives. Without RAID, once a failure occurs, you risk losing all of the data stored on the drive. ReadyNAS's patent pending X-RAID technology automates the volume expansion for you as you scale from 1 HDD to 4 HDD. Most NAS devices on the market aren't future-proof. You can't add or replace disks for larger capacity. ReadyNAS allows you to start with one disk, then add the additional drives over time, without reconfiguring the system and shuffling the data. Additionally, as disk capacity becomes larger and cheaper, you can replace all four disks, oneby- one, while X-RAID automatically manages the RAID details for you. A sound backup strategy is important and relying on manually copying your important files is tedious and error-prone. With the help of EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software, you can set automatic backups of all of your network clients - whether they are Windows, Mac or Linux - to your ReadyNAS. Additionally, ReadyNAS includes an integrated backup manager that enables one-button backup from your NAS appliance to external USB HDD for offsite rotation, or to remote servers, if needed. ReadyNAS is a single centralized source for all of your digital data. The variety of digital devices and hard drives that currently house the data in your home and office can make locating a particular file quite arduous. ReadyNAS can bring all of that data together for fast and easy file serving to multiple clients simultaneously. If it's video or other high-definition media you are working with, you can use your ReadyNAS for streaming to multiple devices at the same time. The industrial design and ultra compact form factor of the ReadyNAS makes it perfect for any home office or small business. Standing only eight inches tall and five inches wide, it can fit in any entertainment center or on any desk without taking up much space or making much noise. ReadyNAS also offers low power consumption and a special energy-saving mode that allows you to automate startup and shutdown.
