Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (2TB, USB 2.0) price range: $94.99 - $282.63
- Reviewed by: Dong Ngo
- Reviewed on: 07/22/2010
The good: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk offers the highest capacity to date among single-volume external storage devices on the market. The drive comes in a flexible design that makes adding more connections/features a snap. It also has decent performance.
The bad: Out of the box, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk has only a USB 2.0 connection; other connection adapters cost extra. The drive topples easily when used in the intended vertical position, and it runs rather hot.
The bottom line: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the largest single-volume external hard drive on the market and has arguably the best combination of design, performance, and storage capacity.

This drive seems to have a problem.
by Backup Bob on February 20, 2012
Pros: Drive is quiet and a good buy for the money.
Cons: There is no power switch. The drive will spin when the computer is turned on.
If the computer is rebooted the drive will not come back up; the drive must be unplugged. Seagate recommends installing a different USB driver.Summary: This drive is too fancy for its own good. I needed a backup drive that Acronis could write to. What I got a drive that shuts down and will not wake up on its own. I cannot imagine a homeowner trying to browse the Internet for the right drivers to allow their USB port to function properly with a Seagate drive.
I will take this drive back and get a Hitachi drive. They just plug in, they have a power switch, and they just work. The other three I have are working just fine, thank you.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Unreliable, failed after 4 month. Data in unrecoverable
by sanctipetri on January 24, 2012
Pros: none as I know.
Cons: get very hot, no power switch, randomly crashes and not always recognized by the PC. After a few months the unit stopped working freezing between 20 to 60 seconds, no way to extract the data from the filesystem.
Summary: a piece o junk. This is the last seagate drive I buy. I have been working for +25 years with computers, it is the first time I have experienced this ...
Summary: a piece o junk. This is the last seagate drive I buy. I have been working for +25 years with computers, it is the first time I have experienced this loss of data this way. Seagate tech support sucks, Seagate Data recovery is a scam.

Summary: I ignored my instinct to not buy a hard drive with so many poor reviews for three reasons. One is because I own a 500GB Seagate Barracuda and have not had any problems at all. Two is because I'm only going to use this GOFLEX once a month at most to back up my IMAC. And three, 2TB for under $100 is hard to pass up. I had no issues in reformatting and partitioning the drive. Though I'll admit I did take a long time to read all the issues people had and listened to what seagate said before I did anything. I knew the USB would be slow on my MAC (no USB 3.0) so when I ran Time Machine I had to be very patient. But everything worked fine. So I'm hoping that with my very limited usage I won't experience most of the problems others have had. I'm giving it 3 stars mainly because of the lack of a power switch (very dumb) and the fact that I had to spend so much time upfront reading in order to be comfortable with using this thing. But in the end, for me, it's just a backup, so I'm not going to loose any sleep worrying about it.

Pros: Large drive, cheap price, firewire 800 and USB 3.0 options
Cons: No power switch, erratic behavior, lack of compatibility?, irregular shutdowns

Summary: No idea why CNET rated this drive so highly. Perhaps it was because it appears to work great out of the box. Live with and the problems begin to emerge. I'm using it with a brand new Mac Mini and it has caused me hours upon hours of headaches. Two other friends that bought this drive have experienced similar problems. In fact, one of them opened the new box only to get a faulty drive that he had to exchange for another, which has behaved this way.

Crashed and took my data with it
by nvh99 on October 30, 2010
Pros: Nothing! It failed.
Cons: Had it for a week when it crashed. Its own diagnostics tell me it has an error and has to be reformatted. My data is backed elsewhere (ironically, I bought this as a 2nd backup) but I lost hours of work cleaning and organizing data.
Summary: Unreliable! Fatal error.

So far, so good...
by dbseattle on September 22, 2010
Pros: Massive drives!
Easily recognized and formatted with Win7(NTFS) and PS3(Fat32) - yes I bought 2 of them!Cons: Came with some lame Replica software that tried to auto install.
Actually 1.8TB - thats 200GB less than 2TB - for those counting at home. ;(Summary: So far they are running smoothly. I formatted both of the units as soon as I got them home. That took a while, but i didn't recognize them getting ...
Summary: So far they are running smoothly. I formatted both of the units as soon as I got them home. That took a while, but i didn't recognize them getting extremely hot as the prior reviewer. So far they seem solid and work as advertised. I was a little bummed to see the actual size of 1.8 TB (which on a drive this size means 200 GB less than advertised - at some point it seems this should be false advertising?) - but still a steal at $119 each at Costco. I will update this review as these drives age.

PLEASE read this success story of product:-
I brought this from local market @ 6500/-!!!ya but in 6/2011, before I had laptop!!!& even before Tsunami hit Philippines. Ya,I used my 2tb HHD as unique data collector. Roaming it across my college as sole user it proved & My Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 3.5 inch 2 TB External Hard Disk survived "3 hard drops on floor", many rough handling, Un-safe removal every time, abrupt disconnections during data transfer but regular defrag & disc check process. After 2 yr of rigorous hardships it surfaced with minor bad sector!! My nightmare began, every software & trials to repair bad sectors failed. At lasted "Seagate Support Center" came to rescue, I did suffer like hell to backup whole 2TB but data collection was worth of it. Being in 3 yrs Replacement Warranty my band new 2tb drive got FREE UPGRADE for "3.0 USB"!!! My happiness knew no bounds! having 80-100 MBps transfer speed!!Even though my laptop didn't had 3.0 usb port but I tested it. It needs external power to run, but doesn't seems hindrance for its pros.
Final verdict- Best buy ever by SEAGATE, especially with its changeable Removable Connector Base keeps it Future ready for any purpose, heats bit but obvious. Better keep it flat to avoid tripping over. Its silent & has auto-power off. Shock proof absolutely. Sleek & beautiful.
Most important- Prized Possession!!! -

by furlongvideo on May 18, 2012
