Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk Kit (1TB, USB 2.0) price range: $94.65 - $233.03

The good: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk offers the highest capacity to date among single-volume external storage devices on the market. The drive comes in a flexible design that makes adding more connections/features a snap. It also has decent performance.
The bad: Out of the box, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk has only a USB 2.0 connection; other connection adapters cost extra. The drive topples easily when used in the intended vertical position, and it runs rather hot.
The bottom line: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the largest single-volume external hard drive on the market and has arguably the best combination of design, performance, and storage capacity.

Excellent external hard drive for desktop
by jmassard on August 17, 2010
Pros: -Easy installation
-LOTS of space for a good price
-Runs quietCons: -It doesn't ship with accessories, so if you don't use USB 2.0 you will have to pay extra for the other adapters. However the different adapters attach easily.
-Easily knocked over. Doesn't take much to send it from vertical to horizontal.Summary: Overall this is an awesome external hard drive. I purchased the 1TB for $99, which is around the same price a lot of competitors are selling 500GB or 750GB. You ...
Summary: Overall this is an awesome external hard drive. I purchased the 1TB for $99, which is around the same price a lot of competitors are selling 500GB or 750GB. You get a lot of space for an average price for hard drives. Right out of the box, the hard drive was easy to assemble (take off the plastic, plug in USB cable, plug in power adapter). It installed the software within seconds on my laptop and I was able to begin backing up my information in no time.
The only down side I can think of is that the unit does fall if given enough effort. However, it's a sturdy casing so it'll be fine as long as it doesn't fall out of a two-story window.
I am an average user, so the USB 3.0 and other accessories don't matter to me. Still, if that does matter to you, then you will have to pay extra to buy those accessories.
I'm loving this hard drive and currently in the process of figuring out what to do with all this space.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good price @ Costco. $99 for 2 TB
by Alien100 on February 23, 2011
Pros: Large storage capacity, easy hookup
Cons: Slows system operation down. Verified this by unplugging drive and monitoring system speed
Summary: maybe the firewire interface or USB 3.0 would speed up laptop speed but you have to purchase that separately. Have talked with technicians who where professional but not to ...

A real piece of junk, unlike most seagate products!
by szcjr on November 6, 2010
Pros: Good design but very poorly executed!
Cons: Drive spins constantly, even when computer is off! See this forum on Seagate:

Summary: Drive starts spinning whenever power cord is plugged in, there is no off switch. Seagate apparently designed it this way and does not care if customers don't want this. Many other problems reported for both PC and Mac users. Don't buy it. Its back to drawing board for me, I cannot recommend an alternative yet.

Very expensive paper weight.
by m_a_reyes on November 21, 2012
Pros: Affordable and easy to carry with you. Customer support was very good in answering questions.
Cons: I had a Seagate GoFlex that stopped working after approximately 6 months of having it. I sent the GoFlex back to Seagate for a replacement. Seagate sent me a refurbished GoFlex.
Summary: I am currently on my second Seagate paper weight and once again I have to send it back to the company without being able to retrieve my data to get ...
Summary: I am currently on my second Seagate paper weight and once again I have to send it back to the company without being able to retrieve my data to get another one. I am very unhappy with Seagate due to the fact that I was under the impression that Seagate was a good dependable hard drive. I guess my search for a good back up will have to continue on.

Slows down system and crashes Windows Explorer.
by RogerL47 on December 3, 2011
Pros: Nice physical and technical design and low cost (Costco).
Cons: Over time software dramatically interfered with and slowed down all system functions. Trying to access copy or delete under Windows Explorer often took 2 minutes or more with frequent crashes.
Summary: Totally unacceptable as a backup device.

Summary: I bought mine at Heathrow when I was going on a trip to Israel and had discovered the night before I left that my laptop had very little space for emptying SD cards on to. This drive proved to be a godsend and is now in use at home as a back up drive.
I don't understand the issue about it falling over, who would want to put it on its side anyway? It's designed to be laid flat and as such it's perfectly stable!
So far it's been 100% reliable and I plan to buy another to use as another back up! for the cost it really is a nice piece of kit and although the USB may be slower than a Firewire connection I like the fact that I don't need an external PSU to power it unlike another external drive I own. -
it's a peice of junk don't buy this drive
by dudenasty on June 16, 2011
Pros: can't say anything good about this drive
Cons: it works once or twice then never works again and this seems to be happening to a lot of people

Summary: i bot this drive so i could move my recording files from compter to computer and i also need it to store images of a bunch of different computers i build and for back up purpuses i did not expect to plug in a usb drive and see it try installing software on every machine i pluged it into wich was only 2 machines before it stoped working then the drive become unaccessable also acronis would not work right with it either it would not make the image or an image would be corrupted and i did not buy this to use some one elses 3rd party half arsed back up software the stopped working any ways ......So i tryed to format it windows could not format it so then i did a quik formatt and it seems to be working now and now acronis is working properly as well ,but why did seagate market this product like this why not just send a blank drive instead cousing a headache, o and it is very slow much slower than my old WD elaments drive it took 15 minutes to load an image onto a new drive which only takes about 2 minutes when i plug a sata drive in and load the image so transfer rate is out the window thanks again seagate for a nother big mess up remember seagate is the company the bot maxtor and threw out the best drives ever made when i started this job way back when i had to replace about 50 seagate hard drives with maxtors becouse the seagate drives were going bad before the computers even made it to the shiping destination never had it happen with a maxtor the custumer had an issue with incompatable memory cousing the WD,s we started using to fail again i've been forced to use seagate drives in our machines and they do fail about 1 out of 20 fails on our custumers so keep in mind thears many reasons to stay away from seagate the are not the best company the fact that the threw out the best drives ever MAXTOR, it just erks me to this day .....so don't buy this drive if you don't want a headache buy a western digital elaments drive or something other than a seagate pruduct o and my proflex drive is shuting down after a few minutes from a shut down on this machine atleast but if I plug it in it stays on and depending on the computer it may not shut off from what i've read so any way don't buy it bottom line

Excellent all-around package from Seagate, once again.
by vassilisg on April 1, 2011
Pros: - Plug-and-play
- Quite fast
- Noise-free
- Solid structure
- Heating resistant (even after 5 hours of constant writing)
- Nice lookingCons: - Possibly susceptible to fall from intended upright position (most likely not to fall, don't consider this a real Con)
Summary: I consider this an excellent (until now) purchase. I got two other Seagate external drives and I am a fan of Seagate (not without a reason). I previously bought a ...
Summary: I consider this an excellent (until now) purchase. I got two other Seagate external drives and I am a fan of Seagate (not without a reason). I previously bought a Hitachi Desk XL1000 external drive and altough a good purchase it proved to be quite noisy during writing large amounts of many small files. I did not face such problems with the Seagate drive.

I am disappointed
by jesenkoe on January 28, 2011
Pros: USB 3.0 (but you need to buy this kit separately). Easy to install. Size is very small for 3.5' external HDD. It's fast...
Cons: HDD will not stay turned off when shut down any elecronic connected by USB (even computer)
Summary: Unfortunately, I will return (or sell) this HDD. I have WD My Book 1 Tb who doesn't make any vibrations, and stay turned off when shut down any electronic ...
Summary: Unfortunately, I will return (or sell) this HDD. I have WD My Book 1 Tb who doesn't make any vibrations, and stay turned off when shut down any electronic connected by USB to it. Let me be clear, I dont like that much this WD too, because of "light show" LED's on front pannel of HDD when it's running (which is so bad during watching movies), but from my experience WD My Book is better choice.
