The good: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk offers the highest capacity to date among single-volume external storage devices on the market. The drive comes in a flexible design that makes adding more connections/features a snap. It also has decent performance.
The bad: Out of the box, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk has only a USB 2.0 connection; other connection adapters cost extra. The drive topples easily when used in the intended vertical position, and it runs rather hot.
The bottom line: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk is the largest single-volume external hard drive on the market and has arguably the best combination of design, performance, and storage capacity.
Pros: 3TB...Need I say more? Okay, I will anyway. The versatile connection options for this drive are terrific. This concept should have been available 10 years ago.
Cons: I haven't found any downside.

Summary: I can only assume that this review is somewhat dated. The version I purchased did not come with a USB 2.0 Flex connector. It came with a USB 3.0 Flex connector, which is backward compatible with USB 2.0.
Clearly, this drive has an advantage that other drives cannot match. That is the Flex connection system. The drive itself always uses the same communication protocols, but the Flex connection system translates that to/from nearly all of the current high-speed connection schemes. (USB, FireWire, etc.) The bonus is that most of the current crop of high-speed connectors are backward compatible with legacy standards, such as USB 2.0.
I am baffled that a reviewer would refer to this device as "tippy" when used in the vertical orientation. In order to assess the drive's tippiness, I arranged for it to go head-to-head with a number of readily available objects. I collected a hardback book, a Zippo lighter, my iPhone 4, my Led Zeppelin box set, and my boxed set of Seinfeld season 3. What I concluded, using rigorous and repeatable laboratory procedures, was that nearly any object with a shape similar to that of the drive will get "tippy" when stood on it's narrow side. There may be some sort of universal force at work here. It needs more study.
I have no experience with the connection problems mentioned in the previous post, I have noted that the drive has a rather aggressive power saving scheme. All this amounts to is that the drive will spin down to save power. It has to come back up to speed before it will read and transfer. Takes a few seconds and has never been a problem for me. If you use it frequently then it will not power down.
Cons: Can't use multiple drives. Shuts down frequently. Won't run long enough to backup. Won't stand up as intended. Requires Windows chkdsk to recover from frequent failures while it is advertised as working with other OS.
Cons: Editor review about drive toppling easily is very correct
Summary: The internet is littered with people complaining abou the drive "disengaging" frequently, which is what I experienced. My situation is not one of having bought a drive that died, but ...
Summary: The internet is littered with people complaining abou the drive "disengaging" frequently, which is what I experienced. My situation is not one of having bought a drive that died, but rather one of many users have the same problem with no resolution in-sight.
Also the cons the editor mentioned were dead-on, so much so I have to feel that alone should have warranted a lower review score.
