- Bottom Line:
- Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.

The good: Interchangeable "personality cables" add value in versatility and speed; inexpensive; works with Mac and Windows OS; three-year warranty; Memeo backup software included.
The bad: Three-year warranty, compared with five years for older FreeAgent drives (still better than most portables hard drives).
The bottom line: Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.

The automatic crappy software is the problem.
by techman93 on April 12, 2011
Pros: Portability and size. Decent performance.
Cons: Software causes this to have all kinds of read errors do not even attempt to use their pre-format. You will lose your data if you do not format before copying.

Summary: Best to format before even starting to use this HD. I am very weary about it even working. But so far it has been good surprisingly since I did format it. However when I tried to format it in windows7 it BOD lol. I did it on an xp laptop and it worked then delayed BOD. Whatever software that comes pre-installed is the worst software I have ever seen. FORMAT BEFORE USING! You are warned!

Great in theory.. less so in practice
by Congaman_Stu on March 21, 2011
Pros: OK concept for multiple machines to access a central back-up. good price
Cons: Got it working OK for PC after a few attempts (wouldnt recognise the drive). I could never get Timemachine to recognise it. After a month the PC stopped recognising it. Right now it's an expensive paperweight. The lights all blink correctly but nothin
Summary: Recommend you check the on-line user forums to see if others have similar reliability problems.. could be a defective unit, or just bad software.

Unhappy with over all performance.

Summary: First off I will say that I have had great difficulty in finding an easy/reliable backup system. Tape drive, no luck, various external hard drive units, unhappy. The Seagate GoFlex did not break my record of disappointments. The included software Mimeo, left me with the feeling that it was doing nothing, or just faking it's job, anyway I felt it to be unreliable.
Seagate support was very difficult, they made it very difficult to return the unit when it tested bad using their own built in "self test" (tested bad) Downloaded Seagate tools, it tested bad. Many loops to jump through before the point to box up and return. Warning: if it is good, and most are, we send it back to you. Tested again with both test methods and it is suddenly good! Aargh!
I uninstalled the Mimeo software on my Win7 and formatted the drive to erase all traces of Memio. Now I am looking for reliable software to use with the the Seagate drive.
Why does it seems impossible to find simple reliable back up systems? Windows back up system on my Win7 PC also does not work for this HD.. Maybe it is working for CD backups, I made a set, but I wonder???1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

my first and very last seagate product
by cohend on April 7, 2012
Pros: there are none of note, at least for this mac user. that half-star rating should be actually be zero. pity we can't award "minus stars"...
Cons: this drive is very poorly designed for mac use; an accidental disconnect sans eject ruins it. repairing it is nearly impossible. other reviews confirm it has memory issues (can a drive have Alzheimer's?). it is, in general, a rather clueless waste.
Summary: another mythic "mac compatible" product to avoid. why waste your money on this junk when there are excellent alternatives? very strongly unrecommended.

Sleek, Portable, Easy to Use. What Else Could You Want?
by dansal55 on February 15, 2011
Pros: Sleek design. Heavy duty construction for casing. Plug and play a.k.a. ease of use. 3MB cable provided fast backup for my full 1TB system. PC and Mac compatible. Will backup system automatically weekly, monthly or daily.
Cons: Haven't found any yet. Oh...yeah there was one. When I opened the plastic wrapping, I got a finger smudge on the beautiful black casing. That bummed me out. This thing is more than just good looking, it's all business too.
Summary: Buy it. Simple.

Pros: Extra storage for all of my photos. I purchased a 1.5 terabyte External Harddrive.
Cons: I want to stop the MEMEO software from running, I do not use this software.

Summary: I really have no issues with this external drive. I love the fact that I can pick it up any time and take it with me. I would like to stop the background software from running, and this is why I ended up here. I will simply stop it from starting up on windows start with a Start Up Manager.
