Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable (1.5TB, USB 3.0, 22mm) price range: $145.89 - $242.74

The good: The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable offers great flexibility, USB 3.0, and a large amount of storage. It also works with both Macs and PCs without having to be reformatted.
The bad: The GoFlex Ultra's USB 3.0 performance could be better and the drive doesn't include a USB 3.0 add-in card for computers that don't yet have this connection.
The bottom line: Even with the slightly low USB 3.0 performance, the GoFlex Ultra still makes an excellent portable external hard drive for people who need to expand their computer's storage.

Great "Flex"ible Ext HDD but Memeo Software Fails
by jake.jacobs on January 31, 2011
Pros: *The array of swappable interface cables are perfect to tailor to your current (or future) PC and/or Mac.
*This HDD is a true PnP device w nominal user configuration required.Cons: *Cheap casing.
*(optional) Memeo Backup application fails miserably.Summary: Model: FreeAgentĀ® GoFlex? (non-Pro) Ultra-portable Drive.

The bad:
-Wish the case was more rugged and sturdy. But for the low price, what can you say?!
-During set-up, I downloaded the (optional) entire Memeo Back-up, Sync, Share, and Send applications. What a mistake! After numerous backups failed and bringing my computer to a near death, I uninstalled the additional apps, restarted, and reconfigured using just the basic Seagate Dashboard. Now, life is good again.
The Good:
-As the editors and other review sites claim, this ext. HDD is truly flexible by means of connectivity to "your" computer type and interface. What do I mean? I have an old rig (Intel P4 2.4 GHz single core CPU w 1024 of RAM running XP 2003) but take great care of it. I am careful of what and how I connect to it. The fact I have the option to use and can select from a battery of cables (e.g., 3.0, eSATA, or Firewire 800) when I upgrade my computer puts my mind at ease. In addition, I applaud Seagate for having a mainstream ext. HDD in NTFS format compatible in both Windows and Mac OS. No need to format to FAT32 and limited to a 4 GB file size. Note: reformatting to HFS+ is required for TimeMachine software users however Memeo Backup (if it doesn't fail for you) is very similar.
-No configuration required. A simple Plug-and-Play device straight out the box.
-This 2.5" drive is small, lightweight and easy to disconnect then take on the go.
This is my first, but not last, Seagate external drive. Receives 4/5 stars due to minor items mentioned in the Cons section above.
I did a lot of research prior to purchase and found nothing better, based on price and my needs. No regrets after purchase and I have strongly recommend this to my friends.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great storage capacity for the size and cost
by jw appleby on August 12, 2011
Pros: small size, range of connections, lightweight.
This drive is fairly quick using the Firewire 800 on a MacBook Pro (quad core).Cons: I would have liked a faster drive and a little more cache memory
USB 2 is a little slow (that's the nature of the beast)Summary: I use it for storage of photographs in the field so I have 'instant' backup of the data on my laptop hard drive. I carry the drive in one of ...
Summary: I use it for storage of photographs in the field so I have 'instant' backup of the data on my laptop hard drive. I carry the drive in one of the lens compartments of my camera case and have had no problems with the abuse that it takes there. The drive spins up and is ready when I need it, I have had no software problems and use it on Linux, Mac OS and Windows (Vista and 7). Overall, I have used this drive for about 3 months and am completely happy with the cost to performance of the product.

Pros: nice appearance.
Cons: 4 drives bought over the past 3-years all failed...3-were the 750 gig flex drive and 1 was the 1.5 tera-byte flex drive. the 1.5 failed this past week; looking for a new reliable drive mfg.
Summary: pass on seagate flex drives.

Unreadable backup files
by beckst27 on December 23, 2011
Pros: lots of storage
Cons: This thing will change the name and extension of files when they are deep within the folder structure, which makes the backup files unusable.
I got this thing a day ago, and I already regret it!Summary: Just Don't do it!
The problem is the Memeo software... Just don't install it and you'll be fine.

Lots of storage, but the Memeo software is terrible.
by OnTheBeachInSoCal on October 28, 2011
Pros: 1.5TB, small, light.
Cons: Memeo Instant Backup: have hundreds of thousands of files, including text files, images, videos, songs, word docs, spreasheets, etc.: if the directory/file name are 'too long' the backup software simply changes the extension to .ptl. To restore, you have
Summary: Bought this at Costco for $109, so for its size, it's a great deal BUT would recommend not using the Memeo Instant Backup software.

Pass on this, 2 months old and it fried. No support.
by robinfro69 on March 7, 2012
Pros: Nothing outstanding
Cons: At only 2 months old, it started losing all data and was unrecognized as a formatted drive every time it powered down (even via Safely Eject Hardware). Seagate's diagnostic tool showed no errors, and so it wasn't eligible for warranty replacement.
Summary: You get what you pay for, and I apparently paid $140 for a headache and lost data.

great storage space backup for our pc and macbook pro.
by toddlerssec on October 10, 2011
Pros: easily installed though my antivirus stopped the autorun. memeo software runs automatically to update backup even in the absence of the drive, which makes backup a fast activity when the drive is attached later.
light-weight, very portable (fits my shirtCons: memeo syncro software is only for limited period trial. otherwise no cons observed so far.
Summary: looking forward to the 5TB portable soon. a great product by all standards.

DOA out of box
by insane consumer on May 19, 2011
Pros: I thought that it had potential.
Cons: It didn't work. It would transfer part of a file and then freeze. It also was slow to be recognize by my laptop.

Summary: Mistake number 1 was that I bought this defective item. I've never had trouble with Western Digital drives. Mistake number 2 was that I bought it from Office Depot. They would not refund my money stating their technology clause on the receipt, that any opened technology item cannot be refunded. They gave me a gift card for the purchase. The manager's attitude was as though I didn't like the product and returned it and that he couldn't resell it. He was deaf to the fact that it didn't work. Don't stores like this do RMA's on defective stuff and get credit for it?
To answer candreae, my laptop works fine with other usb drives so the problem is not with an overloaded usb, just with this particular hard drive.

Summary: The software is very difficult to use and/or understand. There is very little supplied documentation. There is no known or obtainable support phone number. It's hard to know what the drive is backing up and I couldn't even determine if the device could be used to back up two computers. It defaults to backing up data on the C drive when most all data is on the D drive. In light of the reviews, I'm quite surprised and I'm returning it.

Good drive, great design features, loose connector.
by fadertoo on March 22, 2011

Summary: Seagate is replacing the connector which was loose at the USB 3.0 mini connector on mine. Wish the enclosed drive were 7200 RPM, but I'd bet they'll be putting one of those Momentous XT Hybrid drives in these things soon. Now, THAT will be fast!
