The good: Produces among the deepest shades of black of any TV; superb shadow detail; exceedingly accurate color; better off-angle viewing than many LCDs; controls local dimming "blooming" well; plenty of streaming and interactive features; extensive picture controls; sleek styling with single pane design and 1.4-inch-deep panel; energy efficient.
The bad: Expensive; uneven backlight uniformity; adjustable dejudder doesn't work well; subpar bright-room performance; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern; some stray illumination and uniformity issues.
The bottom line: With the excellent picture quality of the local-dimming LE8500, LG challenges other LCD makers for videophile appeal.

THE FILET MIGNON OF LED LOCAL DIMMING TELEVISIONS
by KA0001 on April 1, 2010
Pros: Superior picture quality. Black is BLACK, white is WHITE. Beautiful design - glass over a matt screen. It looks like a work of art. Internet streaming options. Netflix version 2.0 coming soon. SUPERIOR LG CUSTOMER SERVICE. GREAT TV PERIOD!
Cons: That I can't buy 2.

Summary: "I purchased this TV sight unseen based on my previous experience with my LG 55LH90. It is a thing of beauty. When the telvision is off it looks like a piece of art work in my living room. When the tv is on, I am blown away by the picture quality. The blacks are just BLACK. The whites are just WHITE. They have nearly perfected the local dimming technolgoy this year. Last year there was some blooming / haloing, this year I am trying my hardest to find blooming / haloing but just can't (so disappointing - LOL).
Finally, if you are lucky enough to buy this TV I would highly recommend it. It is a TRUE LED LCD WITH LOCAL DIMMING, NOT a couple strips of LEDs on the top and bottom of the TV (Samsung), or arround the corners. There is a hugh difference!!!!"5 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent set but uneven backlighting very disturbing.

Summary: I just purchased the 55LE8500 two days ago, the bigger brother to the 47. I set the television up to an upscale Onkyo receiver and played Wolverine Blue Ray as my first light on the set last night. It was quite an experience. This set has outstanding picture quality and performance overall. Color is superb. I was less than thrilled with its handling of fast-moving images and it was pretty clear that TruMotion had very little impact on that. However, that was entirely livable. However, my second concern with the set is far less forgivable to me. As identified in the CNet review of the 47, there appears to be some issues with uneven backlighting with this panel. While scoping this set out in the store, I thought that I could see a dark and light grid pattern on a bright white monotone screen which I thought might be associated with those 200 plus backlight LED zones. Once home and in a dark room, this pattern became more obvious. For instance, while watching Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, early on where they are showing the bright animated screens associated with the book, there are some large monotone yellow (or orange) screen areas where this pattern becomes obvious. I think the degree to which this is an issue was possibly somewhat understated in the CNet review. Casual viewers are less likely to buy this set than someone who really cares about exacting details of picture performance and quality under all or at least nearly all conditions. In the store, if under bright lighting conditions, and given the highly reflective screen, one can mistakenly dismiss the issue as an artifact of the viewing conditions. If you are considering this set, be sure you look for this effect in order to be entirely satisfied that you are happy with its bright background performance.
PS Use of polarized sunglasses to view a large area of bright light-colored monotone screen on the 55LE8500 makes it easier to observe the uneven pattern of backlighting in a bright room or in the store.

Pros: LG's new TVs are THX certified, which makes a BIG difference in terms of image quality (THX Certified image quality means the TVs are designed and tested to meet the rigorous THX standards for image quality and signal processing performance)
Cons: High priced item, but is around the same range as similar products.

Great all around tv
by Hdohh on February 24, 2011
Pros: This tv gives ultra sharp picture and you can see every little detail. Each color is vibrant and true. It gives very dark blacks and white, whites. The quality is so great its practically 3D. The fast refresh rate makes everything looks so smooth.
Cons: Like many thin flat screens the sound isn't that great, so i had to get other speakers which work great.
Summary: The tv also looks great in any surrounding that you put it in. The large size blows you away when you walk in the room. With 4 HDMI outlets i ...

Good picture, poor quality control
by malox23 on February 6, 2011
Pros: Good picture quality, full-array LED
Cons: Unit failed in 4 months with light use, uneven backlighting, pixelation/jitter during high motion, reflective screen that causes horrible glare in a brighter room

Summary: I purchased this unit since many review sites such as CNET gave favorable comments. When the unit was operational, I was satisfied overall with the picture quality watching HD & bluray material. The panel LG uses is very good, but there was uneven backlighting that was very noticeable during lighter background scenes. Also, some pixelation on the object during high motion as well. The reflective screen was bothersome since any direct ambient light would produce major glare.
The major problem was after ONLY 4 months the unit popped during operation and turned itself off. I unplugged the unit and tried to power it on again. Everything seemed normal, so I didn't think anything about it. Later that week when I turned on the unit again, the top 1/4 of the screen was garbled and in slow motion/refresh. I called LG tech support and a LG technician was sent out to service the unit in a couple days. It was obvious he did not know what had caused the failure nor did the master tech when contacted on the phone. The main board was replaced (with only refurbished parts) THREE times over a 2 week period, two of which made the problem worse causing the entire screen to be in slow motion. 1 of 3 boards improved the picture, but now 2 solid horizontal black lines ran across the entire width of the screen. At this point, I requested to send in a RMA on the unit to LG and at the same time the technician ordered a new panel for the unit. After 1 week, LG approved my RMA for either exchange with a refurbished unit or full buyback of my defective unit. They would not provide a new unit for exchange which was disappointing. I opted for the later and likely never buy another LG unit until their quality control is improved. -
Best compromise of video quality and aesthetics.
by tbwiv on December 19, 2010

Cons: Trumotion makes movies look like video instead of film.

Summary: I set out to get a thin, aesthetically pleasing >50" TV. Deep blacks were a must, but plasmas are too thick and inefficient. Local dimming seems to do the trick for getting deep blacks out of an LCD. Time will tell.
Pretty much can't use Trumotion, which is too bad because horizontal panning could really benefit from it. Not a fault of the set, horizontal panning is terrible on all sets. Too bad Trumotion doesn't fix it.
Bought it on clearance. Set is discontinued, which is a con, but I couldn't afford this thing otherwise.
I honestly don't want my TV to handle do anything on the internet other than firmware updates; I'll trust other companies (Apple, Google, TiVo, etc) to deliver content via the internet for me -- they do a better job with the user experience. e.g. LG's menus are better than most, but sometimes they ask a yes or no question and give you "continue" or "resetting" as options.
Overall, happy so far. -
Detailed review after 2 weeks usage.
by dpweiblen1 on December 13, 2010
Pros: Great build quality, excellent picture, simple user interface, second mini-remote is charming. Very thin. Hard to believe they got a full array back there. Seems thinner than the specs describe. Works exceptionally well with LG's accessories.
Cons: Plugs plug in straight, instead of parallel with screen. Blooming at certain angles on really dark scenes. Crackling sounds upon start up. Will want soundbar. Seems heavier than specs describe.

I bought this system and eagerly unboxed it and set it up. First thing I noticed was an annoying popping and crackling sound -- like, for hours! I was terrified since I had read someone else having this same problem. I calmed my fears by telling myself that it was just the initial expansion of the screen's heat breaking the glue seals. After a few hours, this dissipated a little. It still crackles on start up, but thankfully this issue seems to be only a break-in period thing.
After I got everything else hooked up, I began to test the capability to sate my eyes. It did not disappoint. I tested with HD mkv copies of Avatar to test the vividness, The Dark Knight to test contrast and blacks, and Disney's A Christmas Carol (the one with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge) to test definition. Avatar displayed lush greens and looked very vivid. My friends balked at how the picture looked 3D without being 3D. A Christmas Carol looked really good, with pores and little white hairs showing up on Scrooge's face. Very defined. In the Dark Kinght, when I pause at the Joker's interrogation scene, you can clearly see the blooming thing people talk about. I didn't know what blooming was, but this had to be it. At certain angles the blacks give way to a circular lighter gray color. But, this is really only noticeable when paused and viewed off-center. Definitely not a deal-breaker, unless picture is your utmost concern, in which case: Why the hell aren't you buying a plasma?
The reasoning for my decision of LED vs Plasma was simply, lower weight (to hang on wall), lower power consumption, thinner depth, great picture. This television's specs say it's 1.6 inches, but it FEELS considerably thinner. At the bottom it's slightly thicker; I imagine that's where the thickness comes in, but the rest of the set looks like it is just under 1 inch. Despite this, the whole unit looks as though it is a uniform thickness; it's weird, I know. I guess they did a good job gradually grading the thickness.
The benefits of 240 Hz, just as CNET describes, are difficult to discern. I had a friend with a plasma set and everything on his set looked super-silky, giving off the soap-opera effect. This set gives off that effect, but is much less pronounced. For me this is a good thing, but it might not be for everyone.
Here's something no one ever comments about: If you are considering the Wireless media Hub (LG AN-WL100W), know that it works awesome! Even when using a PS3 to play games, the latency is nil and makes playing from a distance a joy! The picture is sharp and fluid. Now I put my whole setup in a corner with the remote controls for the PS3 and the keyboard/trackpad for the mac mini all using bluetooth. The only gripe I have with LG's wireless media hub is the extra dongle that you have to velcro to the back of the TV. This could have been integrated and makes the concept seem like an afterthought. Also, the availability of connections on the wireless hub is limited to HDMI and component, so if you were planning on plugging in a coaxial cable, you'll have to find another way. For instance, I hooked up a TV antenna directly into my Mac Mini with an EyeTV hybrid adapter and got around this issue. But honestly, I'm very impressed with the performance of the wireless media hub.
The LG branded TV mount also works well with this TV and provides rotation and tilt in the thinnest design I've seen in a mount yet. It is slightly cumbersome to adjust though. Also, this is where having the cables plug in straight as opposed to parallel with the screen is annoying. I'm in the process of buying an optical right angle adapter to solve this. The good news is that with the Wireless media hub, the only cables plugging into the unit at all are the power cable, the optical cable (for soundbar below it), and the wireless media hub's dongle cable. So, an HDMI and optical right angle adapter will make this set sit <1" from the wall. If you aren't planning on getting the wireless media hub and still want to mount the set on the wall, you will find this extremely annoying.
The LG 55LE8500 is a great television for those who want an excellent picture from an LED set while not caring about 3D, low power consumption, a thin design, and who plan on using a sound system. If you buy the LG branded wireless media hub, the power of the unit doubles. -

Purple Bands moving up screen RUINS this TV

Summary: Just bought the TV based on very good reviews of the picture quality...but I'm getting the OPPOSITE on the set that I bought. There are purple lines in rows of 3 that move up the screen constantly in the background. You don't even need a monotone screen to see this. Yes the blacks are very deep...but when those purple bands move up the screen the color scheme is ruined. The picture reminds of you of an old tube TV near the end of its life. I'm very surprised this is a highly rated TV. Maybe this is an issue from one TV to another...but that just means LG has very inconsistent production. Do NOT waste your time with LG. This TV's performance rating is definitely not an 8. If anyone knows how to get rid of these lines please let me know.
