The good: In pure dollar/performance terms the Panasonic TC-PUT50 series is one of the best TVs we've seen, with astounding picture quality for the money. Black levels are the equal of Panasonic's ST50 series in a darkened room, shadow detail is very good, and colors are accurate. Unlike an LCD, as a plasma TV it has superb off-angle and uniformity characteristics. Despite the low price, the UT50 is still studded with the latest features, including 3D and Smart TV.
The bad: The UT50 series doesn't perform very well in a lit room, with blacks becoming muddy and indistinct. The performance of 3D is only passable, with quite distinct ghosting effects. The TV lacks advanced setup controls, which makes tweaking a better picture almost impossible. With only three video inputs it's not suited to users with lots of gear.
The bottom line: The Panasonic TC-P50UT50 plasma TV nearly matches the world-beating picture quality of the ST50 series, at an even lower price.

Summary: We bought Panasonic TC-P50UT50 from Best Buy on July 4th, 2012. At the time of purchase, the Best Buy customer service tried their best to sell us the three years maintenance contract which we refused. Our argument was that the maintenance contract was not needed for the manufacturers like Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, etc.
UPDATE: October 24, 2012
The TV was easy to set up, picture quality was good, and everyone was happy. BUT,
After 45 days and approximately 90 hours of operation, the TV switched off one morning with the front red light blinking intermittently. We first thought that the power tripped, though we were not worried about the surge because the TV was connected through a new surge protector. We switch off the TV for ten minutes and then powered it back on. It started working and we forgot about it. The same day afternoon, it happened again. We suspected the wall outlet and plugged the TV through surge protector to another wall outlet. It started working fine.
After three days, TV switched off again. Our purchase was more than 30 days old, so there was no point in calling Best Buy. I called Panasonic and reported the problem. The TV has one year manufacturer's warranty. The warranty rep wanted to know the number of time the red light blinks. At that point, we realized the problem with the TV. We had not noted down the number of blinks. I took the case number and told the rep that we would get back to them after it happens again and we note down the number of blinks.
It happened again after two days - 8 blinks, pause, 8 blinks, pause, and it repeats. I called the warranty support and let them know. They said that the TV needs to be repaired. It was Thursday. They schedules for the service next week on Wednesday. The gentleman came, opened the back of the TV, and checked in consultation with the Panasonic technical support over phone. Finally, he told me that one of the boards needs to be replaced. Panasonic was going to send the board by over night shipment. He will call me once he received the board and schedule the time for replacement. He said that it would happen on Friday or latest by Monday (that was yesterday). No calls. I received the call today and he informed that he had just heard from Panasonic. The board to be replaced is on back order. It may take 2-3 days or 2-3 weeks for the board to arrive and then he would schedule a time for the replacement.
So, now you get the whole story. My question is : this TV has hardly been used. Why Panasonic would not replace the TV with a new one if the new TV is in the store and the board is on back order ?. I will definitely give a week time and then follow up on this. But, I am definitely inclined to suggest not to buy this TV and definitely not rely on old brand's manufacturing warranty.
Updated on Oct 24, 2012
Panasonic resolved this issue satisfactorily and we should thank Chris and his colleagues at Panasonic. They first replaced the board which lasted 10 minutes. The TV shut down after 10 minutes with the same 8 blinks. It was clear that there was something wrong with this particular piece we bought. Panasonic exchanged the TV yesterday with the new one which is working fine. With this experience, I must summarize that:
1. Since this piece turned out faulty, the above review may not apply to this model or to Panasonic in general. Rather, trust your instinct about the brand name and it will come true.
2. Panasonic should consider providing more detailed and updated information about the warranty / repair cases online. This will save lot of time in follow-up if the need arises.
At the end, We have used Panasonic appliances for a long time and will buy again.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good Until Broken.

Pros: The factory remote works with my PS3. Nice features and pretty good picture.
Cons: The TV got the 8 blinks (of death, apparently) 1 year and 23 days after purchase.
Summary: Loved it and praised it and Panasonic until the TV stopped working today. Im awaiting "estimates" but with it being out of the warranty, i think I will junk it. ...

Not flashy but good
by brownsteel2595 on January 4, 2013
Pros: Good picture out of the box, 3D effect and 2D - 3D effects are OK, TV sound is surprisingly good
Cons: Heavy, lack of connectivioty options, i.e. only 2 HDMI, no glasses. optional accessories are pricey

Summary: I've had this TV for a little over a month and so far I am pleased. This is the first plasma TV I have owned and it does take a little getting used to. LCD / LED are defenitely brighter and to me sharper. The color on plasma however seems very good. I have not done any adjustments to the settings and am very pleased. We are using the Cinema mode and have looked at Standard mode. I prefer Cinema. We've watched Avengers in 3D and the effect was OK, nothing eye popping but a pretty good sense of depth. We have also watched some movies in the 2D - 3D conversion and they too have been pretty good. We haven't noticed any ghosting. The sound from the TV speaker(s) is surprisingly good. Standard and HD picture quality while watching TV feed from satellite is also pretty good.
Like I wrote earlier this is my first plasma so I am somewhat concerned about image retention and burn in despite most every web site I have searched saying don't be overly concerned. Nonetheless on Day 1 we had an image retention issue after initially turning on the TV and doing setup; a ghost like image remained. The image retention however lasted only until I turned the TV off and back on again a short while later. Since then we have had no issues and have run the TV on all types of media. I do use the full screen zoom mode on letterbox movies and will for the first few months.
As written in my "Cons" section the accessories (mainly 3D glasses) are pricey. I got around this by buying Samsung 3D glasses (4100?) which seem to work fine but are not comfortable and do not seem to fit well over my son's glasses. For $20 we'll deal with them for a while and see about getting different 3D glasses later.
I have read the other reviews and am hoping that Panasonic has figured out the issues with the eight flashes, but we'll see what happens. All in all this is a very nice TV. -
Buy at own risk - Panasonic does not honor warrantee

Pros: Good picture, nice features for the price

After less than 7 months of use, the TV turned itself off and would not power on again (8 blink failure). 3 weeks later, still not working, no clue if or when it will be fixed.Summary: Buy at your own risk. While I was very impressed with the quality of the picture and the features of this TV for the price, I must post that I am extremely disappointed with the quality of the product and Panasonic's service. I purchased this TV in May. In December it turned itself off and would not power on again. I opened a case with Panasonic and was told it would be fixed in a week. 10 days later I called Panasonic for a status and was told the part was on order and would take 2-3 weeks. 3 weeks after the TV died, I called Panasonic again for a status on the part order and was told they could not give a status. They have promised twice that my case has been escalated and I would hear from them within 24-48 hours. 8 days later, they have still never contacted me. Buy at your own risk and do not expect it to be fixed under warrantee even if it should be! -

I bought a Panasonic Plasma Tv (TCP50UT50) 6 months ago. While we were watching TV, a black spot appeared on the screen. A few minutes later, the screen went black and I was never able to turn it on again. When I looked, I saw that the panel was cracked (spider web), but from the inside. There is no crack or impact from the outside of the screen, and I am sure that there has never been an impact on the screen. Panasonic never agreed to repair or replace it, even if it is still under warrantee. We are very disappointed and do not recommend this TV. -

Summary: First of all I bough 50UT50 for just $759.99 & for me this was a heck of a deal as this Plasma includes all features I wanted (3D, WiFi-Ethernet & DLNA)
I was about to get Panasonic 47E50 LED, but after experiencing the magic of plasma (Black Level & Motion) I'll never look at LED.
Other than great value, this set offers unbeatable Picture Quality in a Dark Room. Many people are complaining about the performance in a bright room, but If u can control direct sunlight or any lights coming into the screen, then this set produces quite good picture in a bright room too.
I would highly recommend 50UT50 for anybody who is looking for under 1K budget for plasma and under 1.5k budget for LED. -

Specifications
- Manufacturer: Panasonic
- Part number: TC-P50UT50
- Description: The display alternately shows images for the left and right eyes. The left and right lenses of the eyewear open and close in sync with this display timing to show separate images to the left and right eyes. By repeating this action at high speed, the brain perceives 3D images. And because this method displays Full HD 3D images just as they are, both eyes receive 3D images in high, full-HD quality. Unique Panasonic technology converts 2D images into high-quality 3D images in real-time. The image depth is analyzed from the compositional, color and brightness data of each scene, to convert 2D images into naturally beautiful 3D images. In addition to ordinary TV programs, this method can be used to convert a variety of 2D images - such as web content, Blu-ray Disc media, and photos and movies saved onto SD memory cards - into 3D images with a high level of precision.
