Panasonic Viera TC-P65VT25 price range: $3,499.99
- Reviewed by: David Katzmaier
- Reviewed on: 06/16/2010
- Released on: 05/15/2010
The good: Superior black-level performance and excellent shadow detail; accurate primary colors in THX mode; great color saturation; effective antireflective screen; reproduces 1080p/24 cadence properly; VieraCast provides access to select Internet services and improved customization; solid 3D picture quality; includes 3D glasses.
The bad: Relatively expensive; last year's Panasonic plasmas lost black-level performance over relatively short periods of time; non-adjustable grayscale in THX mode; some artifacts in 1080p/24 mode; fewer streaming services and apps than the competition; uses more power than LCDs and newer plasmas.
The bottom line: With both 2D and 3D sources, Panasonic's flagship TC-PVT20/25 series plasma TV delivers outstanding overall picture quality.

Summary: I recently experienced a household loss of our family's 50 inch HDTV we have used for the past 5 years. Our LG 50PX4DR-H was struck by lighting and was put to rest. I paid a hefty price for the LG back 5 years ago and wanted the best features and viewing experience I could get for a reasonable price. Before that, we had the Toshiba widescreen TW20F40 which was a great TV for it's time. My latest quest lead me to the Panasonic TC-P65VT25 which had the best viewing performance I could find. I reviewed the latest high-end models with LCD, LED and Plasma technology from Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, LG, Vizo and Hitachi, nothing but the plasmas were able to effectively display high speed motion without blurring. All has the latest features with widgets and some had a better implementation than others. Many had better physical dimensions with thin panels and beautiful frames, but I typically do not view content on TVs from the side or outside of the viewing area. I chose the Panasonic TC-P65VT25 for it's ability to display vibrant images and effective implementation of web-based accessible content... I was not concern with the 3D functionality, since I have a defect in my right eye which limits my site to peripheral vision. I did not expect that I could enjoy the technology since shutter glasses require viewing the content with both eyes where two images are displayed, one for the right and one for the left. As it turns out and to my surprise, I am able to enjoy the 3D content, just not as well as my family....
Well, the whole intent to submit my review is that the Panasonic TC-P65VT25 was priced to be close to $5K, but went to one of the local electronics retailers who worked a deal with I got it for $2.6K which was a good deal. I had to wait a week, since these TVs were selling like crazy. If you want the best viewing experience with quality design, you can not go wrong with the Panasonic. It's a great HDTV and with a viewing area of 65 inches, your engulfed in a viewing experience that is so close to theater viewing as it comes, but from a much improved visual perspective. Check it out for yourself and you'll see....

The best picture quality I've ever seen!
by joelhulen on September 8, 2010
Pros: Clarity, color, black levels, smooth picture (esp. during fast-moving scenes), 3D quality, plasma vs. LCD/LED benefits, & did I mention black levels?
Cons: Finding an Entertainment Center that can house this 65" beast!
Summary: I've always been somewhat of an early adopter. I was the first kid on my block to purchase an HDTV (57" Toshiba CRT rear projection unit). I bought the ...
Summary: I've always been somewhat of an early adopter. I was the first kid on my block to purchase an HDTV (57" Toshiba CRT rear projection unit). I bought the Xbox & Xbox 360 on launch date. I purchased an HD-DVD player as a gamble during the Blu-ray/HD-DVD format wars... etc. etc. 3 years ago, I purchased a Mitsubishi Diamond series DLP which was the best quality TV I could find at the time. I've since had blooming issues (white over black has a halo affect as if the screen has a filmy substance on the surface) with that set to the point where I decided to upgrade once again.
After quite a bit of research, I decided to buy the Panasonic TC-P65VT25. I did not care about 3D at first, since the content really isn't widely available. Once my wife and kids saw the 3D on that set in action, that's the one they pushed me toward. My consideration for the VT25 vs VT20 line came down to VT25's improved black levels. Other considerations for this set came down to my primary usage: gaming and movies. Plasma televisions outclass LCDs in performance, able to redraw all 1080 vertical lines per frame, providing much smoother motion. Also, the black levels of plasmas cannot be beat, providing a picture with more depth and detail, particularly in dark scenes. As far as 3D performance goes (which originally was not a factor), when I watched a movie like Monsters vs Aliens in 3D on an LCD, I noticed more jittering and aliasing of the objects on the scene when there was a lot of motion, particularly as the "camera" quickly panned during an action sequence. I compared the same movie to a plasma set and did not have the same performance issues. The same scenes were very smooth and appeared to remain at a higher resolution.
Since I did not have a Blu-ray player, and right now, 3D-capable Blu-ray units average around $400, I purchased a PS3, which is due to receive a firmware update within the next month or so in order to support full Blu-ray 3D movie support. It made sense to purchase a PS3 for $299 that is easily upgradeable to better future-proof my "investment". In order to test out the TV's 3D support, I downloaded Wipeout HD, which is a futuristic racing game that has been upgraded to provide full 3D support. I must admit, playing the game in 3D absolutely blew me away! The quality, brightness, and clarity of the 3D images in comparison to what we see in movie theaters were vastly superior. The depth and immersion provided by the illusion was unlike anything I've ever experienced in gaming. Everything seemed so real.
Finally, regarding 2D picture quality, no other television set that I've seen compares. I am completely happy with my purchase, and am excited to see what the future brings as both 2D and 3D technology progress.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Beautiful Picture!
by iconkatz on July 5, 2010
Pros: Picture quality the best I have ever seen (including Pioneer). Black levels are incredible; deep, rich, beautiful colors; picture is completely noise free. 3-D works well, but not much content available.
Cons: None ? the TC-PC65VT25 lives up to all the hype!

Summary: We?ve had a TC-PC65VT25 for a month. The picture quality is startling! The new "U2 at the Rose Bowl" concert Blu-Ray really shows off the black levels and overall video quality. We use the VT25 as a video monitor; audio is through a separate DTS-HD Master capable surround sound system (Onkyo receiver, bi-amped PSB speaker system). The combined effect of the perfect picture and concert quality sound is amazing. With DirecTV, the HD picture is great ? so much better than the old Panasonic plasma we replaced. We find ourselves watching bad movies just because they look so good!
3-D picture quality is good, but the content is limited, and the 3-D picture doesn?t excite me as much as the 2-D performance. 3-D doesn?t add much to World Cup matches (The commercials are great!) and the other DirecTV 3-D content that started this week isn?t very compelling. I?m sure 3-D content will improve.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I've had the 65VT25 for 3 days now and I am extremely pleased with the set. No issues so far and the PQ is amazing. This is replacing my old Panasonic 42G10 and there is just no comparison in PQ. The black levels of this TV are stunning and blu-ray movies when viewed using the 96hz processing are just incredible. I though watching Avatar on my G10 was impressive but on this 65incher it's just unreal. The image looks 3d and I have not even had the set calibrated yet so I can't imagine how it will look when I do. The 3d is very impressive as well but not something I would watch all of the time (I am looking forward to the World Cup in 3d though).
Had my set professionally calibrated by Lee Gallagher in AZ and loving everything about this TV. Sports, movies, news, and anything in HD is just amazing. The 3D is awesome for gaming and sports, but I have not gotten a chance to watch a 3D movie so no comment there. Overall, an outstanding TV and the best PQ I have ever seen!

"Absolutely Incredible" does not do it justice
by case31 on August 20, 2010
Pros: The picture is unmatched by any other TV on the market. Setup is very easy. The menu is easy to navigate and use. Can be found for under $4000
Cons: You only get one pair of 3D glasses.

Summary: I have been researching TVs for about 3 years now, and when it finally came time to purchase, I went with this TV and have not looked back. Originally, I had been set on getting a Samsung LED-LCD. Don't get me wrong, Samsung makes fantastic TVs, but this unit leaves LEDs in the dust. The plasma display is able to produce deeper blacks, and is able to handle fast-motion graphics better than LED. When stacked up against other plasma TVs, this one still easily tops the list. Once you watch a sports event or a Blu-Ray on this TV, you will immediately fall in love. I also own the P42S2 from Panasonic, which is a great TV as well, but it is no comparison.
The 3D capability is pretty cool. I wouldn't say it is great, because the technology is still so new that there are a lot of improvements that will come. From what I have seen, the 3D just adds a little pop to what's going on in the scene. For anyone out there thinking that getting a 3D TV (whether it's this one or another model) will deliver the same experience as going to an IMAX theater, I'm sorry to disappoint you.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

2 broken sets in 14 months, no support from Panasonic
by gpgessler on March 31, 2012
Pros: While it was working, we enjoyed an amazing picture and size.
Cons: Panasonic product support is there to sell you a new TV once your set breaks, not help you fix it.
We went through 2 sets in 14 months and are now shopping for a new TV because Panasonic does not offer the part needed for repair of our 2nd set.Summary: Based on researching discussion boards and other reviews of this product, Panasonic TVs are prone to problems, moreso than other manufacturers.

can't connect the system to the internet.
by Gordonjin on June 19, 2011
Pros: Great 3D and High Definition Quality.
Cons: I cannot connect the system to the internet. I am receiving an "unable to find the Viera Server". I have tried connecting the Panasonic DY-WL10 Wireless LAN Adapter directly through the TV and to Pasaonic DMP BDT100 Blue Ray Disc. Both method failed.
Summary: Great 3D and High Definition TV... It would be better, if i can get the internet streaming or services via the TV.
