Summary: I bought this TV as a gift for my parents 50th anniversary, initially the TV works well but after about a month, it would not turn on anymore. I talked with Philips and they said the video board is damaged due to overheating. Philips' service guy told me this problem right away, which tells me that they have seen this problem more than a few times. I am very disappointed.

The 37PF9431D is better, more inputs, more features

Summary: Cnet doesn't have a review of the 37PF9431D, the one without that ambient light feature, which is too bad. The 9431 has 2 HDMI inputs, and with a DVI to HDMI connector, can hook to a computer if desired.

There are 6 inputs (sources) for this model.

One of the 4 AV inputs AV3 is strictly Component, AV1 can be component, S-video, or Composite (yellow input), AV2 is S-video or composite only, and Side is Composite.

The "Delta Audio" feature allows you to set levels to compensate for different output levels of your various devices, VCR, DVD player, Cable Box, etc., which is a great feture if you are familiar with the problem of changing input devices and getting blown away when the audio level is radically higher on one device than another. Delta-Volume fixes that problem.

Upgrading the firmware is easy. Philips does provide upgrades, and all you need is a USB memory stick, put the upgrade file on the memory stick, and plug into the USB connector on the side and the firmware upgrade menu will appear.

The 37PF9431D has an HDTV tuner that will pull HD and normal signals from a cable system, or off an antenna if you hook to the F-connector (standard TV connection).

The only gripe I have is with HDMI in general. It's a cleaner approach than component, but the copy protection scheme, and handshaking between devices slows down the sync when changing to an HDMI input.

The picture quality is excellent, and LCD has higher resolution than Plasma for the same size screen, so I went with the LCD. Since 1080p is only a pipe dream at this point, all you need is 1080i until you buy some device that outputs in 1080p.

Get the lesser model, with more features. You give up ambi-light, but get the features that David Katzmaier found lacking in the 9631 in his review, which was a good review of a system with apparently fewer features.

Pretty good picture for 768p set

Summary: Well, I've had this unit for about 10 months out on my deck (protected from the weather) and it's been flawless.

Why is it out on my deck you ask? Because of my con...it didn't fit in the cabinet we wanted to put it in and I didn't want to take it back. A really great excuse to get another HDTV if you ask me!

Anyway, this set has a colorful & detailed BRIGHT picture during the day while watching football and it's a pleasure to watch at night after adjusting the picture down to enjoy evening entertainment without going blind from the super bright LCD backlight.

This TV is perfect for watching College Football, NFL football and College Hoops (keep your NBA). The set has an 8ms panel and the image lag (motion response) is pretty good. The only time the image starts to smear is after too many Yuengling's! (gotta be from or have visited the Philly area to understand that one).

I have DirecTV connected to it via the first set of component inputs and love the picture. I did turn the sharpness down on the TV set so as not to show the "artifacting" from the ever changing DirecTV compression scheme(s). (By the way for those of you who care to know, the new DirecTV broadcast resolution for their MPEG4 system is 1280 x 1088...strange huh? Yeah I had an engineer show it to me when he was testing their raw feed.)

The black levels are pretty good for an LCD. The colors the reviewer is talking about being bad I have to disagree with. Things look pretty accurate...I don't watch test patterns when I watch TV...I watch TV.

Speaking of crappy signals, I also have Comcast cable connected to it and the QAM tuner nails the HD local "unscrambled" channels along with my neighbors Video on Demand and select Pay Per View content...gotta love "in the clear" content.

I have an HDMI upscaling DVD player connected to it via the HDMI input and the picture is great. I actually prefer outputting 480p via the HDMI on the DVD player and letting the TV scale the image to 768p...the TV's scaler does a better job than the DVD player...imagine that.

The set does not have a PC input...so what. I bought it to watch sports and TV not read over worked CNET reviewers try to complete reviews on products they really don't even use...don't believe me...look up navigation systems...that chick is clueless.

The Ambilight feature is pretty much useless during the day when I am watching football. However when the night comes...nice! The colors change to match the content. I have Ambilight set to "Relaxed" so as not to be too distracting. My neighbors agree...picture looks better with Ambilight on than off...and that's before the beer kicks in.

Anyway...I was just checking out CNET and saw this TV being reviewed by Mr. Katzmier(sp?) and decided to throw in my 2 cents plus some other useless information you might be able to use.

By the way...the guy who is commenting about this set having 2 HDMI's and a DVI input is wrong. The set he is talking about is a European model not available here in the U.S.

Also the picture being shown for this TV is also incorrect. The picture being shown is for a the European 37PF9431D or if you can still find it the U.S. 42" Plasma version, 42PF9631D. The set in the video with Mr. Katzmier is the correct one.

Maybe a little late with my review on this set but if you can find a closeout...get it, you won't be disappointed.

Good, but not great

I tried a blu-ray disc (on my friends PS3) and it looked decent, but I've seen better images.
