The bottom line: CNET did not review the Pioneer Kuro PDP-6020FD, but we did review a smaller model in the series.
Although CNET did not review the 60-inch Pioneer Kuro PDP-6020FD, we did review the 50-inch Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD. Judging from their spec sheets, the two Pioneer plasma HDTVs are basically identical but for screen size, so we expect the review of the 50-inch model to give a good indication of how the 60-inch model will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD.

Can't believe how great the picture is on this TV.
by bassman372 on June 4, 2008
Pros: Blacks and SD channels look amazing. HD channels can'get better, maybe with the Elite.
Cons: Home Media Gallery is just OK. The bezel is really shinny, you could use it to shave in the morning.

Summary: I just got one of the first 6020fds from Pioneer and I can say this picture is amazing. HD channels and DVD's look perfect but what surprised me was that SD channels even looked great. This wasn't the case with my old HP 5880n that this set replaced. I can watch SD channels in widescreen format without a problem.
I know Pioneer is coming out the Elites but I can't image the picture getting any better. Glad I got the 60" 6020fd over the 50" Elite version out in a few months, that is my opinion, I know some will argue with me.
I'm not using the speakers but I listened to them and they are decent. I have the set connected to my Pioneer receiver via HDMI. The receiver is HDMI 1.2 and the 6020 is 1.3a, no issues syncing up.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good Picture, but Good Riddens, Pioneer
by whatthedileo on September 17, 2009
Pros: Inky blacks, detachable speakers - a rare but very welcome feature for those who use the TV only as a monitor, and like to have a picture-frame style wall-mounted plasma.
Cons: The TV tuner is GARBAGE. I have had a better cable TV tuner experience with every VCR I've owned since the 80's. Slow to warm up, slow to react, and much slower to initially find all available stations (an hour or more?). Very limited pic tweaks.
Summary: This was a definite step-up from my 2004 50" Panasonic monitor. But the tuner is so pathetic on the Kuro that I use this huge display for nothing but DVD. ...
Summary: This was a definite step-up from my 2004 50" Panasonic monitor. But the tuner is so pathetic on the Kuro that I use this huge display for nothing but DVD. The black levels on the Kuro put the old Panasonic to shame, without a doubt. But c'mon, you can't change channels for the first 10 seconds while it 'warms up'(it actually announces this on-screen if you try). And you have to CHANGE INPUTS on the remote to go from digital TV to analog TV. I'm used to scrolling thru analog/digital cable, but now I have to choose one or the other. Totally stupid. Pioneer probably has great engineering reasons for this (i.e. it is an artifact of running the TV on a version of the Linux operating system, etc) but I don't want excuses- I want a channel-changing experience similar to the last three decades of my life, which I have been able to get from HD-digital tuners from Motorola and LG since 2004. And Pioneer comes along and revolutionizes black levels, and then takes us back to the stone ages with the tuner. Hilarious. I have also been bugged by the swarn-of-bees effect that I see when I am 2ft from the screen. This is not a normal viewing distance, so I don't knock it down for that, but I am able to view high-res photos off a thumb drive with this TV, so I feel I should be able to get a little closer than recommended TV viewing distance when looking at my 10megapixel fmily photos, right?!? When you get close, the pixels look like they are vibrating, moving around as though you are watching valence electrons hop from shell to shell or something. My Panny never gave me this effect. Is this a side-effect of the Kuro technology? I can't help but think even though I can't explicitly see it from a seated distance, that this pixel-vibration is in some way affecting my sense of image detail. Oh, and the wide screen effects are just as terrible as my Panny - enough with the fish-eye lens, where you stretch only the far LEFT and RIGHT of the screen. Is anyone fooled by this? Dot-for-dot for DVD/Blu-Ray/HD and Zoom for SD content (to fill the screen without unnatural aspect ratio stretch). Forget everything else - otherwise it's like using 'Concert Hall' effect on a Dolby Digital movie - why mess with the origianl material? You can't make it better - the best processing can only make it 'different'. The worst processing will definitely degrade it.
But hey, a 60" Kuro delivered into my home for under three grand, I'm not wouldn't even think of sending it back. I love watching movies on this thing, but this unit is far from perfect. -
Best picture Yet.
by jray21 on February 15, 2009
Pros: Great colors, strong blacks. Automatically adjusts to video input size and quality with HDMI(My Toshiba, only 1 year old, would not always pick the correct format. Clear picture even with non-HD. Screen not as reflective as other glossy screens.
Cons: Screen does reflect a little, but not nearly enough to make it a problem.
Summary: Absolutely incredible. With the price at 3500 it's a lot more reasonable. It's worth every cent. I highly recommend it.

Summary: I began looking for a plasma display about 3 years ago. The Pioneer ProFHD1 was impressive but too costly at 8k for a 50 inch. The Elite Pro 150 was Excellent but still at least $7,500. I spent a lot of time looking at the Pioneer 6010 next to the Panasonic 58700u. The Pioneer edged out the Panasonic. When the new Pioneer 6020 arrived I was sold. I believe it is better than the 6010. My Pioneer Elite Reciever VSX-92THX with the Dvd upconversion makes my old Apocalypse Now DVD look near blu-ray quality. So much so that I do not feel the need to replace any of my old favorite DVD'S anytime soon. I have not adjusted the colors on the TV at all yet and my ps3 Blu-ray looks fantastic. I previously had a Mitsubishi rear projection 55" HD, 1080i set which was good for the last 10 years. This TV is twice as good, maybe three times as good. I can run a standard Fios signal through the 92THX reciever and it looks great. The HD Fios stations look 98% as good as blu-ray. I am a happy camper. I always try to purchase locally. The local stores would not hear of any discount so I had to purchase it via the Internet store ElectroniquePlus.

Summary: I'm not the biggest AV nut, but I know a few things, at least enough to pick out such a well reviewed TV. Image quality is the best I've seen. I can't properly compare the black levels to last year's, but they sure are impressive. Color adjustments would be nice, and it is my understanding that this is one of the few things you really get with the Elite series. I'm sure it is accessible via service menus, or the service serial port. My not so trained eye doesn't yet see an issue with color.
