Product brief
Intro: The Samsung HP-S5073 is a 50-inch, plasma television.Compared to other plasma TVs on the market, it is relatively inexpensive at around $1,485.In general, a liquid plasma display can recreate more realistic black-levels than an LCD display can.
Noteworthy Features: Has an audio line-out, SPDIF output, headphones, USB, serial, VGA input, S-Video input, composite video input, HDMI, and component video input connections type, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced TVs.Furthermore, this TV supports Picture-In-Picture, note: a single-tuner PIP TV requires an external signal source such as a VCR, DVD player, or a cable box with composite video outputs. This television can display images that are sharper and more realistic than analog television when mated to a high definition signal. The 3:2 pulldown feature of this TV reduces artifacts that can occur when motion pictures are transferred to a digital format such as DVD.
Weaker Features: None noted, given available product data.
Suitability: Built for those who are looking for a stylish, compact TV.
Value: In view of its relatively inexpensive price, this TV has great features for the money. In fact, you would usually pay around 50% more to get a plasma TV having similar viewable size.
Suggestions: (1) Since this TV supports progressive scan video, you probably will want to have a progressive scan DVD player connected to it.This will produce a relatively more "flicker-free" picture, compared to what is produced with conventional DVD players and TVs.(2) For help in understanding the various types of TVs and their features, read David Katzmaier's TV buying guide at CNET Reviews.
Receiving HDTV broadcast: The three common methods to receive HDTV broadcasts are via satellite-TV set-top box, cable system set-top box, and over-the-air reception from a digital HDTV broadcast station.
True HDTV: True HDTV programming is broadcast in three resolutions: 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Tuner options: An HDTV-ready satellite or cable box will act as an outboard HDTV tuner for your digital television set that lacks a built-in HD tuner.

Superb picture for the $$$

Summary: This tv is an awesome piece of hardware. After careful consideration and months of research I was all set to purchase either the highly touted Panasonic or the high end Pioneer both of which are considered to be among the elite plasmas. After spending 4+ hours in Tweeter looking at my pre-determined options I was very disappointed with my choices and was drawn to this beauty. The nice folks at tweeter let me play around with all the settings on the the different units and change inputs, h/d, dvd etc. to determine which one was most versatile. The Samsung proved to have not only the best color, but also the best whites and blacks by far. I found myself comparing the 5073 to the $6,000+ Pioneer rather than the comparably priced Panny or Pioneer. That is because Samsung held nothing back with this unit and went after the big boys, and with great success I might add. The Panny, Sony and inexpensive Pioneer just looked washed out compared to this model Samsung. The Panasonic PX60U isn't even in the same class as the 5073 and the 600U isn't much better. The whites had a blue hue to them and the blacks weren't nearly as deep. I have an external surround sound system hooked up which I highly recommend. Even an inexpensive system is lightyears better than the internal speakers, although compared to other plasmas these speakers hold up well. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my unit, but the 2 year warranty is unbeatable with anything close to the price range and worth hundreds of dollars if added on to a 1 yr. The picture is drop dead gorgeous in HD and I refuse to watch anything but HD now. I have only used one of the many inputs which is the mini card from my digital camera and it works great. I have had the TV for over a month and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. The only negative I can say is that sometimes the tv has trouble with shadows but it is minor and barely worth noting. There are so many great features offered with this tv in addition to the incredible picture I highly recommend it to anyone in the market.

Great Plasma for the price
by anishman on June 1, 2007
Pros: 2 yr warranty, plenty of inputs, USB, pictbridge, great to look at when turned off
Cons: surround sound is horrible, non Hi-Def doesn't look good

I also like the array of input choices. I haven't tried HDMI, DVI & cable card though.
I got an HD antenna & the HD channels look amazing. However, I'm not too impressed with the standard def channels on this TV. They look better on my analog TV.
Also, the built in surround sound speakers don't work well but I have the TV connected to my home theater system & it's fine. I've yet to come across a good built in speakers on TVs though.
Also, the antiglare thing could've been a little better.
The USB port I think was a nice touch. I tried connecting my camera, Ipod & RioCarbon. rio didn't play as smooth as the Ipod but that's not a big deal. I don't think I'm gonna play my Mp3s on TV.
The bottom line is if the price of HPT5064 had gone down when I bought this set I'd have probably gone with HPT5064 but this TV is a great deal for the price. -
Won't accept cable card
by jamej on May 25, 2007
Pros: Has good color when it works
Cons: Sound system is weak, Cable card system is weak.

Summary: While this set is supposed to support a cable card, the one I have won't.. Surround sound is over rated. Sounds like your in a tin can .. Factory tech has yet to figure out why it goes off by it's self or why it has 15 or so channels (out of 200) that continually break up like they are trying to scramble.. Samsung treats their customer like the are idiots and blame everything on the cable... paid too much only ot have it as a monitor. I'm guessing this is going to be a court case... I recommend you dont buy Samsung....

This television is not only a beautiful picture, but it is also has a great look to it.
by lovelylady702 on December 6, 2006
Pros: The best picture quality I have seen - it blows away any of the other plasma televisions I have seen and gets a fantastic HD picture. I can't watch a regular television after. Very easy functions.
Cons: I haven't found any yet, except sometimes digital cable doesn't come through - but that is the digital cable box - it happens on my other television as well.

Summary: This television is a GREAT BUY!!! I had the HP-R5072 first and there was a problem with it, so I had to get a new one from the manufacturer and they sent me the new HP-S5072. I like that it has the speakers in the same unit and the new sleek, shiny look to it. The picture quality is fantastic and everything is plug-and-play. The remote is still simple, but I normally use my Cable remote anyhow. I have never seen such a great picture - I would say better than going to the movies!
