The bottom line: CNET did not review the Samsung LN46A630, but we did review a larger model in a different series with similar specs.
Although CNET did not review the 46-inch Samsung LN46A630, we did review the 52-inch Samsung LN52A650. Judging from their spec sheets the two Samsung flat-panel LCDs are basically identical but for the screen size, contrast ratio, screen coating and the exclusion of a fourth HDMI connection. The A650 has the company's "Ultra Clear Panel" screen coating, which we complained about in the review as being too reflective. The A630 has a more matte screen coating that doesn't reflect as much ambient light, and also causes the lower contrast ratio spec. Aside from these differences, we expect the review of the LN52A650 to give a good indication of how the LN46A630 will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Samsung LN52A650.

Samsung is The Best LCD choice
by lionel-leon on April 29, 2009
Pros: Perfect contrast ration to display dark scenes and superior performance. You can no be wrong when choosing the Samsung LCDs. I recommend you to check out http://www.squidoo.com/best-hdtv for information on the best and cheapest HDTV to get at 2009,
Cons: I can't think of one.
Summary: When choosing LCD Samsung is your best choice. CNET is definitely right about Samsung being the highest quality of LCD.

fantastic choice for the money
by rsetha on January 2, 2009
Pros: -120 hertz feature/ smooth motion
- matte screen compared to 650 model (alot less glare)
- touch of color red is a lot less unnoticeable
- great color/sharp pictures
- better compatibility with my laptop (via hdmi)
- best value for the priceCons: - Sound Quality is missing good bass
-AMP on high level can make it seem too realistic and make you dizzySummary: I've been selling HDTVs for more than a year and I after endless hours at staring at the store displays I've been waiting to get my own. So ...
Summary: I've been selling HDTVs for more than a year and I after endless hours at staring at the store displays I've been waiting to get my own. So i've had my experiences with all the top brands, and I've definitely seen first-hand the dramatic changes LCDs went through. Now when it came to choosing a flat screen, It was either a Samsung or a Sony (specifically the samsung 630/650/750 vs. the Sony W/Z series). All those models are excellent by the way. So, why did I choose the Samsung 630?
PRICE - I got this 46'' for 1299. , which is about the same price as the 550 at my store (which I'm not going to name). The 650 was around 1599, and probably because of overstock the 750 was 1499. I was originally going to get the 750, but decided the extra money wasn't worth it (it had a ultra-clear panel, and some more internet capabilities, BUT the picture on it didn't look as good because it bled out too much light and the picture was faded). I had a very bright room, so I knew the ultra glossy panel of 650 and above was not a great choice. As for the sonys: the W series, i didn't like the design, and the color on the sonys are just not as vibrant as the Samsungs. However, i did like the Z series and the 10 bit panel, but I would've to spend 1699.99 for that thing.
FEATURES
120hertz - TWICE the refreshing rate on the screen on most standard LCDs. I've compared the two lcds in my house and you so much smoother motion on a 120hertz tv. There is virtually no lag. Trust me, it'll make the difference if your sports or action fanatic.
AMP - or auto motion plus is the technology Samsung uses with the 120 hertz to reduce motion blur and smooth movements on the screen. I usually keep this on the low setting because high because a little too realistic and movies may feel unnatural (this is because movies weren't intended to look that way): sometimes it makes you sick because you not used it. I play with sony TVs all day at work, but I usually have to max out their settings to even get to match with a samsung lowest AMP setting)
COMPATIBILITY
I believe this model has around 3 hdmi inputs. The Samsungs worked better with my laptop (gateway fx series) than any of the sony TVs (via hdmi). The sonys kept recognizing it and losing the signal, and screen constantly blacked out and reappeared. I hooked it to any samsung, and it was immediately picked up and flawless.
TOC
the touch of color is a design either hated or loved by people. This is particularly due to the red around the frame of TV. The 630 model has very little red, in fact some got shipped without the red on it at all (i think mine did, i'm not bothered by it anyways). It still has the glass like edge around it, and looks fantastic. Even with the red you probably won't see it unless you are 1 inch away from the tv. So this is a perfect tv for someone who wants to spend less than $2000, and loves the Samsung, but despises the redness of the TOC.
SOUND
The sound is actually quite average in most LCDs. Which mean they are fairly weak and pathetic. I really don't care because these LCDs can't deliver any superior sound anyway, so its smart to buy a nice home theater system.
OH YEAH
-Less glare than the 650 (huge difference in a super bright room)
-The TV swivels, I know it may not be a big deal to some, but it so much more convenient when the TV swivels when you got to plug things to the TV or adjust it to the people in your room.
OVERALL
To sum it all up the picture looks phonomenal and the color is so vibrant and lovely. ESPECIALLY in 1080p on blu-ray. Remember people if you want the BEST of your tv get a blu-ray player (its unfortunate how many customers I get trying to return many great TVs simply because they fail to set it up properly or spend the extra money for blu-ray or HD). Its a step up from the 550 and just as good quality as the 650.
I only write reviews if i'm passionate about the product. So stop reading my gibberish, and just go out the buy the dang TV!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Choosing between the LN46A550, LN46A650 and LN46A630?

Summary: When researching LCD TVs, I narrowed my search to the Samsung 5- and 6-series, based on reviews of quality and overall value. I went to our local Best Buy several times to also let my eyes judge in person what I had been reading.
First, I'd like to say that all three of these TVs are quality units, but each has a different feature set and if you are in the same situation I was, hopefully this review will help you make an informed decision.
LN46A550 (Released March 2008): Great TV for those on a tight budget who still want one of best pictures available on any 46" LCD TV. Initially, this was my choice based on strong reviews and the savings it offered. The 550 has a matte screen, which reduces the reflection of ambient light and glare. I decided to narrow my search to the 6-series based on 120Hz processing (not available on the 550), which is a feature I wanted after seeing it in person, especially for Blu-ray movies and watching sports.
LN46A650 (Released March 2008): Offering Auto Motion Plus 120hz and 50,000:1 contrast ratio, I initially thought this was an excellent choice. However, the 650 suffers from the same problem as plasma TVs, in that they reflect ambient light and significantly increase glare. Samsung chose to use a super glossy surface for their higher end LCD TVs, which increases contrast ratio at the cost of heavy reflection. Personally, one of the main reasons I was buying an LCD over a plasma was to eliminate glare. Samsung offers the PN50A650 for nearly the same price as the LN46A650, and you get a larger screen with 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
LN46A630 (Released August 2008): The first thing you might notice is that Samsung released the 630 five months after the 550 and 650. The reason for this was consumers wanted a 120Hz Samsung LCD in a matte-finish screen. Also, people were quite mixed in their opinion of the red Touch of Color (ToC) frame and thick bezel. The 630 provides a thinner bezel and mutes the ToC. I much prefer this look, both when the TV is on and off, so I'm very happy with the adjustments. As mentioned, this LCD uses the matte-finish, which eliminates the reflection of ambient light and glare. It was interesting when I was in Best Buy, because they had a 650 and a 630 side-by-side. Both picture quality was very sharp (40,000:1 vs 50,000:1), although the 650 reflected light from several sources. I actually stood right in between the two screens and moved to the left and right. When I was in front of the 630, I could not see any reflections and the picture was extremely clear. As I slowly moved to the left in front of the 650, my face and body reflected off the screen like a mirror, as well as other light sources. During bright scenes this was not noticeable and the picture was very good, but during dark scenes the reflection was very distracting. The 630 had none of these issues, with the same advantages of excellent picture quality and 120 Hz processing.
I think this LCD is the best combination of quality and value available right now. The sound of the 630 is average out of the box, so I have a home theater in a box (HTIB) hooked up to it. This is pretty common for most LCDs, except the very high end models.
Overall, I think the LN46A630 is the best choice among Samsung LCDs, in terms of price, picture quality and features. If you are trying to decide between the 550, 650 and 630, I highly recommend the LN46A630.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Phenomenal picture....

Summary: Bought this the day after Christmas at Fry's for $1299. Compared to other 46-47 1080/120 LCDs, this one was the sharpest. One thing that I was pleasantly surprised with is the low reflectivity of the screen - we have a bright TV room and I have not had any issues with glare. We have Dish network, and watched a "Bee Movie" in HD - unbelievable! It was like we were watching in 3D or something... My wife and I could not get over the clarity and crispness of the picture. The set has some other really nice features like the "Wiselink" which allows you to stick a USB drive in the side of the set to listen to music or look a digital photos - nice touch. Set-up was easy and the remote is intelligently laid out and simple to use. Overall, I am extremely satisfied. I was originally going to get a set in the 50-52 inch range, but ended up with this one due to the superior picture quality - after all, that's the whole point of HD, isn't it? I bought a three year extended warranty from Fry's for $139 (about 10%) - hopefully I won't need it but I felt it was a reasonable price judging on past experiences I have had with flat panels in general.

Great TV, sme quality as the 650 if not better

Summary: I must have gotten the best deal on this TV when I bought it back in October. Fry's probably had it mis-priced online, cause I got it for $1299, no tax and free shipping. The 40" version was $1599 at the time, so I can only assume they had them mixed up. Anyways, they honored the price!
The 630 seems to be least known version of all the Samsung ToC series TV's. Everyone sells the 550, 650, 750, 8 and 9 series, but you hardly find the the 630 anymore. I actually went to a BestBuy yesterday to see if they had it, but they none. The 630 is great. Picture quality is true, features are ample, and I think the fact that the red ToC color is less noticeable makes it a better deal than the 650. I live in a bright NYC apartment with a wall of windows in the living room and I can watch the TV just fine during bright sunny afternoons.
Its simply the best deal that Samsung has right now.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Ok, after having read so many helpful and not so helpful reviews, after spending many hours in different stores, looking nuts over little details, bringing in my own dvds and BR, I decided to take some time to give back with my own review.
I finally decided to go with the Samsung 46A630. Mine is a brightly lit room, so I was scared of getting reflection, like I had with my former tv. I sit about 9 feet away from the set.
Pros:
-No reflection. None period. Excellent even when sun rays hit directly to my right.
-TOC you don?t even notice the red unless there is light behind the set.
-Swivels.
Image: 1st of all if you mostly watch tv and dvds, and you sit closer than than 10 feet from the set, I would go with 40 inch. Otherwise you will see imperfections and the tv seems less crisp than my former 30 inch model (HDTV). Then again, as the quality of the programming improves and everything turns 1080i, you will not notice anything. But standard and dvds look like old VHS?
So, now I know why the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD? Before with a smaller set, I could only tell the colours looked better, but now? It?s like night and day! Everything is just stunning!
120hz Motion plus. Ok, I really spent way too much time playing in stores with this gadget to see if it was worth the extra dough. LG?s is just terrible, you have to leave it to off all the time or else you get distortion in the image. Sony, even the XBR8, doesn?t cope with the high setting and will leave distortion as well. Samsung does the best (I haven?t checked Sharp).
1st I set it to low or off. But as you get used to it you set to medium. For some programming you see no difference, but for other (especially film ?including film like shows or ads you really notice the effect, and yes, the higher you set it to the more it looks like video. ?Too smooth, makes it feel fake ?which is what cinema is! But set it to low or risk it to medium and OMG! The characters are sharp!) For animations like Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda set it to medium or high and you won?t believe your eyes! Just the preview of Kung Fu Panda seeing the mouth of the panda as he eats and talks, looks so smooth! I have yet to try it with other shows (nature) in which you don?t mind the video like quality.
Blacks are black. Period! And bright is bright.
Cons:
-The tuning could be confusing, but fiddling a bit with standard should be fine.
Customizing the tuning can be upsetting since not all the options are offered for every mode. That?s just dumm.
-I wish they would have put the motion plus on the remote instead of always going back to the menu to play with it depending on the programming.
All in all a great set! I don?t regret it one bit!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent!
by m4nc1n1 on December 15, 2008
Pros: Picture on this thing is stunning. stay away from the 650 unless your are puting it in a theatre room with no windows and turning off the lights. paid $1399 @ CC...what a deal!
Cons: none so far. owned for 2 weeks.
Summary: why pay more for a Sony? Samsung is cosmetically superior and holds its own in performance.

by wtreach on December 11, 2008
Pros: The TV looked and worked gret for the 2 days that it worked at all.
Cons: It went into an infinite loop of turning itself on and off. I'll come back and update this review when the problem is resolved; a repair request is in to Samsung.

Updated on Dec 17, 2008Summary:
I put in a repair request using Samsung's online system. Got a call back the next day and scheduled visit from a Samsung repairman (actual Samsung van showed up, so not a third party company). He opened it up and found which board was at fault. He had guessed the power supply board and had a replacement, but it was something else. So he had to leave, get the new part shipped over, and rescheduled 4 days later. He jsut finished the repair, and the TV seems to be working fine. If I can find how to upgrade my rating, I will, because the TV itself is great. Works smoothly with my Tivo (via HDMI) and blu-ray DVD (via HDMI; both tivo and blu-ray send sound over to my stereo by optical digital audio).
Updated on Dec 17, 2008
The matte finish on the screen really does help against reflection: I no longer see a reflection of the lamps in my living room as I used to on my old TV.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great value, features, looks and operates just as well!
by ssorgs on October 30, 2008
Pros: Value, features, looks, operation (esp tuner!), matte screen, swivel stand, and picture.
Cons: PIP too deep in menu and HDMI has to be primary source. Would be nice to access warm color tones from picture standards other than movie. Would be nice to have more control over naming of inputs. ould use another set of A/V inputs on the back.
Summary: Great Value: Purchased from Fry's on sale for $1399 (cheaper, incl tax than nearly anywhere online). Truly is worth more than it's price.

Solid Features: In general, there are way more features and customization options than I'll probably ever use and I like to customize. For starters, the ATSC tuner is awesome. I have the most basic Time Warner cable you can get (analog and only first 22 channels). I also got a Philips DVDR 3475 at the same time, which I use like a VCR, and have the cable split to each tuner (TV and DVR). The Samsung tuner picks up even HD channels off the cable while the DVR tuner only finds the digital versions (SD) of the local networks. The menus are easy to access and look good. I like that inputs that are turned off are removed from source cycling. The channel list works great and allows you to add/edit channel names. As noted above, would be nice to be able to create names for sources, rather than choose from the list (selections mostly fine but not DVR - called PVR which can confuse others). Haven't tried the usb drive yet but it works with FAT32 flash drives and I plan to play tunes with it off an SD card. Also, remote is great though I just got a Harmony One that I'm still configuring and the 630's will end up in drawer.
Looks Great: I really prefer the looks for the 630 over the 650. The ToC is very, very subtle on this one (unlike 650, 750, etc) and you really can't even tell there's any red in the picture frame. The 630 is also a little more squared off and nicely understated, especially the thin, clear strip all the way around. The matte screen is great - hardly any reflection and when it's off it's not like sitting in front of a mirror.
Picture: Should be a given and it is. Super vivid. Will say again that it would be nice to access warmer tones without going to movie mode. I'll have to dig into more of the advanced picture customization options to bring out fleshtones, which is where it seems a little washed out. At both stores where I've looked at the 630 it's really jumped out over others so I don't think it's just a matter or other shoppers employees messing with settings.
AutoMotion: Seems to work well, though using the demo mode is the best way to tell. I'm not convinced it's doing that much but I like knowing it's there and 120Hz is the standard at this price and above.
Bottom, bottom line -- great TV. You won't be disappointed!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

The best TV on the market under $1600
by bthomassen on June 11, 2009
Pros: Excellent image quality, sharp picture, almost no glare, lightweight, large screen
Cons: sound is nothing stellar. Rewiring may change that, but hi-def channels on Comcast through my surround sound blew me way.

Summary: I was not a hi-def customer before this tv. I held out for 9 years, and just sold my 36" Sony Wega that was a $2,200 set in the year 2000. Standard Definition on this set looks good, and hi definition is mind blowing. The quality is unbelieveable. I was going to get a plasma, until on sales person at a box store told me that Plasma is a dimmer picture over all (which is true). Don't believe that you can't get deep rich blacks from an LCD. This is not the top of the line Samsung, but you don't need to spend $2,000 on a plasma to get great picture quality. There is lots to be said about this set, I recommend it more than any other set or brand. I did about 5 months of research, which was on and off for a while. I bought an up-convert 1080p DVD player used, and it looks great using HDMI cable. I will add a HTPC eventually to get web and pc displayed on it. I did try connecting a laptop with regular blue RGB and it looks very awesome. My recommendation: Don't go out and by $1 HDMI cable. I mad the mistake of thinking that they work. They are garbage. If you have to go low low price, spend at least $10.00 on the cable. I got 2 off amazon, they were absolute garbage.
More on Sound: As stated earlier, I never had the luxury of hi-def channels on comcast. The sound is all 5.1 AC3 Dolby digital, and it is incredible.
Shopping for this set: You will not find this set in retail stores. The 630 is not available in the Northeast US anywhere; you have to get it online. I don't know why. The 610 is below this, but has better contrast ratio. The 650 is more money but is better. You will really enjoy this set. If you are on the fence, Amazon will deliver, no pun intended.
