Product brief
Intro: The Samsung PN42A400 is a 42-inch, plasma television.Compared to other plasma TVs on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $845.In general, a liquid plasma display can recreate more realistic black-levels than an LCD display can.
Noteworthy Features: Has a conventional 4:3, zoom 16:9, wide zoom, zoom, and just widescreen modes, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced TVs.By way of comparison, the typical cost of a product with a comparable set of widescreen modes is $1,715.This set can display images that are sharper and more realistic than regular television when mated to a high definition signal. The 3:2 pulldown feature of this unit reduces artifacts that can occur when motion pictures are transferred to a digital format such as DVD.
Weaker Features: Has only a rear connector location.
Suitability: A plasma TV, suited for home entertainment.
Value: Given its very inexpensive price, this TV has great features for the money. In terms of viewable size, plasma TVs with similar viewable size have an average cost of around $1,260.
Suggestions: (1) For assistance in shopping for a new HDTV, read CNET editors' Ultimate HDTV Buying Guide.(2) If donating or repurposing your old TV is not a viable option, CNET encourages households to recycle their electronics. Please explore the following website to find a recycling center in your area Electronics Take Back Coalition.
Receiving HDTV broadcast: The three common methods to receive HDTV broadcasts are via satellite-TV set-top box, cable system set-top box, and over-the-air reception from a digital HDTV broadcast station.
True HDTV: True HDTV programming is broadcast in three resolutions: 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Tuner options: An HDTV-ready satellite or cable box will act as an outboard HDTV tuner for your digital television set that lacks a built-in HD tuner.

Two words... BEAUTIFUL and CHEAP
by dbozard on November 28, 2008
Pros: Color, Connectivity, Brightness, Can't beat the price for what you get...
Cons: Can't be in direct sunlight like some LCD's; better speakers, backlit remote control...

Summary: First and foremost I want to say that if the box didn't tell me that the native resolution is 720p I would think it's 1080i or even 1080p; it's just that good!! Love the color. The black levels look great compared to my other Samsung and since I have Charter Communications anyway who only broadcasts in 720p it look INCREDIBLE.
I waited in line for almost 2 hours for the piece and it was well worth it. I have never bought a Plasma (I tend to stick with LCD) but I am very impressed thus far. I know Plasma's can burn images much easier than LCD's but as long as you don't leave your TV on pause or with the black side bars (which you can take off in the menus) then burning images shouldn't be a problem.
Although I have perfect vision and I am a technology junky I have to say that my eyes are fooled that this is "only 720p." I would definitely recommended it because of the price first and foremost and only one television provider right now and in the near future over 1080 anything, DirecTV. Also gaming is amazing. I play my Xbox 360 in HD and it looks immaculate.
I didn't give it a 5 star because I think the sound could be a little better. The speakers seem a little weaker than most HDTV's that I have seen and heard but just turn the volume up and little higher and it won't bother you too much. And the remote control seems a little cheap compared to my other Samsung 32" LCD.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Now that I've had this set for over a month, put 300 hours on it, I added the Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-Ray player the image soared. I'd rate it now 5 stars.
Purchased from Amazon for $699 plus free shipping.
Arrived in good condition, advised by delivery guy to inspect for any damaged. Stand was already mounted. Could not turn on due to cold weather it was around 29 degrees. Condensation immediately formed. Waited 3 hours. Had previously downloaded owner?s manual, also read all adjustment comments here on AV Science Forum.
First the case is beautiful, love the gloss finish and the swivel stand. Easley lifted by 2. The remote is not as classy as the case, has a low end feel compared to my Panasonic HD LCD remote. To be fair all the buttons and controls are well laid out, it just doesn?t have the solid feel and weight of the Panasonic.
Connected to Component input from HD DVR Cable Box, turned the set on and immediately made the suggested picture settings. One note on the picture controls, the most extensive I?ve seen. If you?re a tweaker freak you?ll be beside yourself.
My HD Time/Warner signal up here in upstate NY varies greatly, on occasion it looks like standard TV. When good it?s great. Have the optical audio out from the cable box to my Receiver. Cable remote setup was a bit of a problem, found the correct Samsung code, but then lost some cable box settings, like the guide and DVR list. The solution was first program the Samsung then the cable box itself, never noticed the box setup code was listed. All works well except the TV volume seems stuck on the cable remote. Anyone have a solution?
I have a Samsung DVD player (upscaller) connected with HDMI (input 1). DVD?s look great, did notice noise on the ?Dark Knight? DVD in a particular dark scene with almost no accent lighting near the end, could be the player, the DVD, the transfer or the set. So far ?Hell Boy 2? was the most spectacular looking.
After a few days I switched the component cable to HDMI (input 2), the picture greatly improved. I had to switch the cable box to HDMI sound.
I made one other picture adjustment, switched from ?Film Setting? to ?Standard? from there I lowered contrast, brightness and cell. I felt the film setting added to much yellow to flesh tones and white graphics also had a cast.

great television
by smor01 on March 10, 2009
Pros: awesome screen quality, the best i've seen for the price. I actually have the 50", but is the same as the 42.
Cons: Lack of svideo, and a 3rd hdmi input.

Summary: I was looking to get the Lg PG20 but they were sold out everywhere I went . This samsung was the same price so I decided to give it a try. I am very happy with the screen quality, I think it is even nicer than the LG, and has a little darker blacks. I was disapointed when I got it home and there was only 2 HDMI ports and no S-video though. (the LG had three HDMIs). There is an ugly pink hue on picture when you have it connected to regular cable. But if you have a digital cable box and you use the component inputs instead the that pink hue completely dissapears and the picture quality is great even on non-hd channels.
I would have given 5 stars if it had the extra inputs.
