Product brief
Intro: The Samsung PN50A400 is a 50-inch, plasma television.Compared to other plasma TVs on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $940.In general, a liquid plasma display can recreate more realistic black-levels than an LCD display can.
Noteworthy Features: Has a conventional 4:3, zoom 16:9, wide zoom, zoom, and just widescreen modes, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced TVs.In fact, the typical cost of a product with a comparable set of widescreen modes is $1,715.With built-in HDTV compatibility, this unit can display images that are significantly sharper and more realistic than regular television, as long as the source is high definition.(It can easily render standard-resolution digital TV broadcasts and also depict the full resolution of widescreen DVD video.)The 3:2 pulldown feature of this set reduces artifacts that can occur when motion pictures are transferred to a digital format such as DVD.
Weaker Features: Has only a rear connector location.
Suitability: A plasma TV, suited for home entertainment.
Value: In view of its very inexpensive price, this TV has great features for the money.
Suggestions: (1) For assistance in shopping for a new HDTV, review CNET editors' Ultimate HDTV Buying Guide.(2) If donating or repurposing your old TV is not a viable option, CNET encourages households to recycle their electronics. Please explore the following website to find a recycling center in your area Electronics Take Back Coalition.
Receiving HDTV broadcast: The three common methods to receive HDTV broadcasts are via satellite-TV set-top box, cable system set-top box, and over-the-air reception from a digital HDTV broadcast station.
True HDTV: True HDTV programming is now available in three resolutions: 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Tuner options: An HDTV-ready satellite or cable box will act as an outboard HDTV tuner for your digital television set that lacks a built-in HD tuner.

Great Budget Plasma
by mildewproduction on November 29, 2008
Pros: 1) Great picture (I have it hooked up to HD cable, Bluray Player, & Xbox 360)
2) Good contrast
3) Great price for 50 inchesCons: 1) Short on inputs: Only 2 HDMI inputs, and 2 Progressive inputs, no RCA inputs, no opitical audio INPUTS, there is an optical output
2) Small flicker when fades to black, gone if you calibrate tv properlySummary: I bought this tv for $800 and couldn't be happier. Sure it's 720p and not 1080p, but for this cheap I couldn't be happier with 50 inches ...
Summary: I bought this tv for $800 and couldn't be happier. Sure it's 720p and not 1080p, but for this cheap I couldn't be happier with 50 inches of HD television. You really don't give up that much resolution at 50 inches anyway.
Picture looks great, I have HD cable, Xbox 360, and Bluray player hooked up to it, and I love it. I have not seen any signs of the screen door effect.
What is bad about this tv? Well they skimped on the inputs. There are no front, or side panel inputs. On the back there are two HDMI inputs and two progressive inputs....ZERO RCA inputs. If you have RCA (like an old VCR or Tivo) then you use up one of the progressive inputs. Also there are ZERO optical audio inputs. There is an optical audio output so you can pass the HDMI sound to your surround sound receiver.
This tv has some feature to make the blacks darker, I think it does it by turning off the pixels all together. The only time you notice it is if the show you are watching fades to black, then it looks like the tv is completely turned off. At this point the tv would "freak out" and switch between the tv's black and off really dark black. I was able to get the tv to stop doing this when I calibrated my contrast and brightness settings. Would have been nice if Samsung offered a setting for the tv not to do this.
I have noticed some very slight image burn in after playing games, but it goes away quickly. After some research I found this is normal for Plasma's during the first 150-200 hours of use. I left my tv on for 24 hours on a cable channel, and already I've found that it's happening less frequently. I am a big gamer, and put in a few hours on the Xbox every night, the tv is brand new, and there are ZERO permanent burn ins, but I still wanted to mention it. Just don't leave a still image on for hours and hours during the first few months of use.
Overall I'm really happy with this tv. 50 inches is huge in my living room, and the color, contrast, and resolution is really nice. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles, doesn't have the 120hz, or contrast and picture you could get for another $1,000-$2,000 but at this price it's a great tv.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Fantastic set for the price!!
by joebloggs13 on August 26, 2009
Pros: So many features for a set in this price range. This was a set made only for the holidays, and boy did samsung nail it! I dont think that there is a set out there today to rival it in quality/price
Cons: As long as you followed the break in procedure(good advice on avs forum), there are no cons to this set that I have found!
Summary: I have owned this set since December 08, and I can say that I am extremely satisfied. I have logged over 1000 hrs of viewing time easlily, and just recently ...
Summary: I have owned this set since December 08, and I can say that I am extremely satisfied. I have logged over 1000 hrs of viewing time easlily, and just recently recalibrated the set. Wow, it gets better with age! No IR whatsoever after gaming sessions. If you take care of this set in the first few hundred hours, it will return the favour by giving you stunning visuals and great entertainement value for your money...guaranteed!!

good product for the price
by LuRene1 on November 30, 2008
Pros: better image for sure. The sound quality is okey, but works great with HD channels.
Cons: Sound is low

Summary: You get what you pay for. The product is really good. The image can be improved with the input connections on the tv, and if you have cable, the receiver will give you a better quality image, and with a Home theater, the sound should improve. Right now I have digital cable, but unable to access my HD channels, the cable company suggested that I get a receiver, and I am going to do that.
