A behemoth of a TV both inside and out.
by lemailme on May 7, 2010
Pros: Awesome picture controls, sleek design, stunning picture quality, tons of inputs
Cons: HUGE box, needed a minivan to take it home! Radiates a little bit of heat, but is an Energy Star TV so no worse than an LCD. Faint, VERY faint buzz.
Summary: This TV is really great. I have been doing my research for months, and it was either the PN58C550 or the PN58B860.

The difference between the C and B is that C is 2010 panels, while B is 2009. There have also been many threads about buzzing on the B series, but on the C it is so faint that any amount of volume makes it obsolete.
I managed to pick this up from Costco for two thousand dollars, with a two year warranty, and its a great price.
For picture settings, i scoured the internet and finally found some great low light room ones:
White Balance Settings:
Red-Offset: 22
Green-Offset: 25
Blue-Offset: 12
Red-Gain: 33
Green-Gain: 25
Blue-Gain: 33
Picture Settings:
Picture Mode: Movie
Color Temp: Warm 2
Brightness: 56
Contrast: 90
Cell Light 8
Color: 53
Tint: G35/R65
Sharpness: 10
Black Tone: Off
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Gamma: 0
Colorspace: Auto
Flesh Tone: Off
Edge Enhancement: Off
Digital NR: Auto
HDMI Black Level: Low
Film Mode: Auto
With the lights dimmed, the picture using these settings for Lost, The Pacific, etc is absolutely stunning.
I hooked it up to a Z5500 sound system and it sounds great as well. I moved up from a Sony Bravia KDL 40 Inch, and the difference in blacks is HUGE. The black levels on plasmas are second to none. I have nothing bad to say about this TV.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

If picture quality and price are important!
by nicholes91 on July 3, 2010
Pros: Great picture. Nice design. Features are easy to use. Remote is simple. The Picture is awesome, the price was $1,499 at Best Buy. The TV is simple and the picture is amazing!
Cons: Sound is OK. I don't think any flat screen of any brand is all that good.
Summary: I chose this TV based on the Best Picture, highest resolution 1080, contrast ration (2Million to 1), refresh rate 600hz, and the .001 pixel response time. I did not want ...
Summary: I chose this TV based on the Best Picture, highest resolution 1080, contrast ration (2Million to 1), refresh rate 600hz, and the .001 pixel response time. I did not want internet or social apps ect. 3D was not important. I like Samsung, my old Panasonic was junk. By filtering out 3D and Internet, then looking for the very best picture this is the TV I found and I love it.

HD picture is wonderful but I am having SD problems
by susieclark42 on January 27, 2011
Pros: Wonderful HD channel picture, great ease in initial setup, love the look and the stand. The size is perfect for my 500 sq ft living room. Box is huge but very nice engineering with the lift off design instead of having to pick the TV up out of it.
Cons: Standard Definition (SD) channels are horrible. Static and lines running thru vertically, worse than any of my old tvs ever. NO closed caption option, has to be chosen thru a menu on the cable box and if it is set up with HDMI that menu unaccessable.
Summary: I bought this HDTV for my living room and a Sharp Aquos LED for my bedroom. I am very very happy with the high def channels thru my cable provider ...
Summary: I bought this HDTV for my living room and a Sharp Aquos LED for my bedroom. I am very very happy with the high def channels thru my cable provider but the SD channels have lines and static that is unbearable. I even went and got a new digital HD cable box, new cables and of course I figure that wasnt the problem because of the great HD picture..HELPPPP if anyone thinks they may know the problem>>> I am deaf and have cochlear implants so when I watch tv I have great difficulty understanding all the different voices and I am totally lost without closed caption. I keep my bedroom tv set with CC all the time. The rest of the family would rather not have that on the screen so I would normally turn it on and off in the living room. Well, I dont have that option with this tv. I cannot even pick it in the first place . The manual says to choose it thru the cable box. Well if you are hooked up with HDMI you cannot access that screen because you have to power off the the box and go into the inner menu for setup. SO basically I am not going to be able to watch a tv I gave 1400 bucks for and that is totally unacceptable unless I find the answer to my problems. I would love to keep this TV and be happy so I hope I can overcome these issues. Any help would be great. I will talk to tthe tech support at Samsung probably tiomorrow. I was just trying to eliminate any variables first. THe SD problem is one thing but why would they not provide and option for CC, bad engineering on Samsungs part on that matter, they should think of the handiicapped people too.

Picture is flawless...and no buzzing!! (reading the forums some sammy plasmas are buzzers some are not. Guess I got a good one!)
I went with the 550 series because their is a hack you can do via the remote and turn the TV into a 590 and access the Cinema Smooth Option.
I only have about 40 hours of tv watching on mine so far so I haven't calibrated it yet and not played with the picture at all yet. (Samsung & AVS members say leave factory settings than calibrate the tvs around 150 - 200 hours. But picture is still absolutely gorgeous.
Colors Pop, They are very sharp & vibrant. I have this tv in a basement that is basically really dark so I can't comment what this tv is like in a bright setting..but I can telly you its absolutley gorgeous in my control lighted basement.
I'm happy again with my electronics purchase and this one is a keeper!!!
I hope yours is as well./1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cannot go wrong with this T.V.

Summary: I purchased this t.v. at Best Buy for $1,399.00 two days ago. I had found it at Conns for same price but Best Buy was running special where they threw in 19 inch t.v. for free. If its free, why not. So far I love this t.v. It has a stunning picture that "pops" out at you. I do not spend over $200.00 without spending tons, probably to much, of time on the internet reading reviews of what I am going to buy. I saw some that mentioned a buzzing sound but I have tried hard to hear it and I do not hear a buzzing sound when using the t.v. speakers. I am not using the sound from the t.v. anyway so do not even see this as a problem. I read about some not liking the speakers on the t.v. but they sound fine to me. So, if you do not have a sound system I think you will still be pleased.
I was stunned by how real the picture appeared to me. As i mentioned earlier, it just "pops" out at you. I am sure there might be some t.v. out there that has a better picture but I did not want to spend $5,000.00 on a t.v. This one fit my budget and I think I got every bit of it from this t.v.
There are no nternet hookups for this t.v. so as long as you do not neet internet on your t.v., this t.v. is for you.
I put in a movie on the DVD player to check out the picture and found myself amazed. I also hooked up an Xbox and again, just as pleased.
Without a doubt, I would recommend this to other people.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best value out there
by eakdaman on November 30, 2010
Pros: Incredible Picture, dominates LCD TVs
Cons: faint buzz, only noticeable with no volume
Summary: You can't beat this TV for the price. If you get your internet apps through a PS3 or something else, this is the TV for you!
