  Samsung TV That Doesn't Look Stupid...32" SMART

  Summary: My main TV - and thus my comparison point - is a Sony Bravia Z series from 2009. Here are some things I think are outstanding about the Samsung. I'll try to only talk about things that aren't mentioned constantly:
  
  1) I dislike the overly contemporary look of most high-end Samsung TVs, and therefore don't usually consider them for purchase. This, however, is a classic looking TV that won't look old next year and doesn't draw attention to itself at the expense of everything else.
  
  2) Sony - and most other companies - no longer make a high end 32" model, which is stupid. My main TV is most likely to have a local computer nearby. It's the kitchen and the bedroom where I need the SMART features most. For that reason, this TV actually has very little competition.
  
  3) USB ports. These are outstanding, especially if your network is too slow for streaming (or if you don't have a port nearby and your wireless is slow). Where my older Sony only plays some pictures off USB - and way too slow to actually want to use that feature, this newer Samsung can play almost all my media files locally or use a wireless mouse/keyboard. I have one USB port filled with a Logitech receiver, which allows me to use a mouse and keyboard I have stashed under the bed. Haven't actually bothered to use those yet (except for testing), but it's nice to know I could turn them up and use them without having to mess with any options.
  
  In the other USB port, I have a micro-SD card reader about the same size that always has 32GB of TV series that I can watch in a pinch, say if they put on some reality crap instead of a decent show that I was expecting over the air. Neither USB device can be seen except from the side. It reads the files on the micro-SD card directly from the source menu and as quickly as Windows Explorer.
  
  4) DLNA. As much as I love that micro-SD card USB reader, you really don't even need it because the DLNA features are pretty mature. The fact that it reads .mkv files so easily, and you can control integrated subtitles and audio tracks so easily is amazing. My other TV requires transcoding for anything but MPEG, which really bogs down the processor on my laptop. I really recommend Wild Media Server because it works so well with both this and my Sony, and can easily spit 720p to both TVs (different shows) simultaneously. I couldn't get Serviio or Mezzmo to work as well. Samsung apparently has some freeware available that you might want to try as well.
  
  All that said, despite the high contrast ratio, I don't feel like the picture is quite as good as my older Sony (which I believe only has a CR of 100,000:1), even after a lot of playing around. As you'd expect from its small size, it does play SD (and lower) very nicely on its screen without pixelization (Comment for 32" ONLY!). Even so, I love this TV for the bedroom, and felt the price was reasonable. It may get moved to replace the TV in the kitchen one day, and it will be great there, as well.
  
  Also, I would prefer a browser with adjustable transparency over the TV, as the PIP version has the sound and picture cutting out sometimes.
