The good: The beautifully thin Samsung UNES8000 LED TV seems to have come from a year or two in the future. Its massive feature set includes a touch-pad remote, IR blaster, four pairs of 3D glasses, motion and voice command, and the industry's most capable Smart TV platform. Its picture quality boasts superb color accuracy along with industry-leading video processing and 3D performance.
The bad: Lighter black levels and imperfect screen uniformity hamper its picture significantly, especially for such an expensive TV. Samsung charges too much for extra features that are largely unnecessary and poorly implemented.
The bottom line: Although it hits plenty of high points, the Samsung UNES8000 LED TV cannot ultimately justify its high price.

Wants to be a Grand Slam, but more like a 2-Run Homer
by IMStaton on April 18, 2012
Pros: Picture Quality is perfect,
On-screen user interface works pretty well,
Built-in tuner is pretty powerful,
Camera and mic work beautifully,
Voice commands are good,
Motion control is ok.Cons: Basic remote is not universal,
Web browsing is a bit clunky.Summary: To give this some context I've now had the 60" ES8000 for 5 days and have sampled HD cable TV, Blue Ray, and Apple TV streaming HD.

Aesthetically the TV looks fantastic. I think somewhere Samsung was inspired by Apple architecture and a less-is-more approach to style. Deciding to wall-mount the TV I was slightly disappointed to not be able to use the stand that come with it as it is really sharp looking. The lack of edge and thin profile invokes some iPad sensibilities when it comes to appearance. If I were to nit-pick I'd say that the silver edge on the TV would look better with a more brushed finish than shiny, but that is really a function of style and preference. I also think the "samsung" power indicator at the bottom is a bit too bright in a dark room setting. These are minor items.
I've had no issues with image quality so far. If there are problems with with screen quality on this model I've not witnessed it, so time will tell if there were early lemons that others got stuck with. To my eye the TV came calibrated too bright and sharp, so i've gone in and adjusted down a number of the settings. I don't know if that is their standard factory default settings, but it was easy to adjust so I'd not consider it a real flaw.
The on-screen user interface works pretty well and seems fairly easy to navigate. I'm not sure how valuable some of the Apps are at this point, but I like the concept and assume that function will expand in time. The TV setup was reasonable, as was the network connections (I was connecting to an Airport Express - no problems).
Here's why I'm only giving this 4 stars, and what prevents this from being a Grand Slam in my opinion.....the physical user interface with the two remotes, along with Hand and Voice gestures are a bit clumsy and needing refinement. My first reaction to seeing two remote controls was "Why?". Why not make one REALLY GOOD remote, instead of two in which neither are perfect. The basic remote is not universal, so if you're hooking up to a Set-Top Box or other accessories it's almost useless. The touch pad universal remote was a great concept that was poorly executed. The touch sensors are skittish and the 7-8 buttons on it really have no intuitive qualities. At this point I'm using the universal remote supplied to me by my cable service provider.
In summary the two things that were really important to me; how the TV looks, and the screen quality, have both been fantastic. My recommendation to Samsung is to really give this user interface some additional thought. If nothing else make a fantastic App that allows us to use tablets for navigation.

Best HD picture I've seen yet!

Summary: I replaced my 58" Samsung Plasma HDTV with this 60" LED and I'm not disappointed. At first I was a little disappointed with the black uniformity, but found out in calibration that using the "Movie" setting doesn't yet work well with uniformity. After I re-calibrated in the "Standard" setting the picture absolutely POPS! This LED already has excellent color accuracy and video processing, once it's calibrated it really shines. The holy grail of a high quality HDTV is to give such depth perception and contrast in such a way that a 2D HDTV program looks almost like a 3D HDTV program. In every high quality HDTV program that I've watched with this LED there is at least one scene where the pictures looks so much like a 3D picture (but it's 2D), that I have to do a double-check to make sure I'm not wearing the 3D glasses. If you're a stickler for a high quality picture this ES7500 or the ES8000 will impress you. Once it's calibrated, there is no HDTV on the market that can do all things as well as this HDTV. I've owned the best monitors through the years: Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic and Sharp. They have all lead the pack in their year of excellence and Samsung has done it for 2012 with the ES series. PS - Of course the built-in speakers on any of these TVs are so pitiful, so I purchased the Samsung Sound Bar with a wireless Subwoofer to use for casual TV watching, when I don't want to fire-up my surround sound system. You can't really even consider sound quality in any of today's TVs, they are all awful.

Summary: Had this TV for 2 months and worked great. All of a sudden it started glitching with random lines, frozen picture, and would reboot. This all started slowly at first and got progressively worse over time. Now its to the point that it doesnt even do anything but constantly reboot itself. I have been in contact with customer service since the end of January 2013 and here it is March 2013 and still no progress. Ive asked for them to come get this paperweight and give me my money back. We'll see how that goes... still waiting...
