The good: The Sharp LC-LE830U has a picture with relatively accurate color in bright areas, good video processing, and the ability to handle bright rooms well. Its feature set offers excellent help and support options, built-in Wi-Fi, and a remote with three programmable keys to easily access favorite apps. It's also quite compact and energy-efficient.
The bad: Reproduces lighter black levels; poor screen uniformity; dark areas tinged blue; separate interfaces for apps and widgets can be confusing; somewhat generic styling.
The bottom line: Although it's blessed with a solid feature set, the picture quality of Sharp LC-LE830U series falls short of most LED-based LCD TVs we've tested.

Could be better, but is a solid deal for $600
by hypnotoad72 on September 10, 2011
Pros: * 120Hz feels fluid but not gaudy
* very good black levels
* excellent color gamut, when calibrated
* yellow subpixel DOES make the warmer end of the spectrum more vibrant
* limited edge bleed
* Quadpixel does a good job at smoothing jagged diagonal linesCons: * Poor viewing at wider angles (color washes out, but at least there's no hue shift)
* many people report some clouding on upper-left corner (two circular white splotches) - calibration removes most of this
* contrast ratio is disappointing for the MSRP dSummary: The unit I got had 2 hot pixels (bluish-white), but they're not noticeable from a distance (3 feet). It's not worthwhile to exchange. YMMV, of course.

I never use wi-fi, or the internet, not for a television.
When looking at the set head-on, and calibrated, the image output is very sharp (I'd love to find out the dot pitch for the pixels). Upsampling of 480o or standard-def DVDs looks VERY good. This has to be due to enabling Quadpixel, which smooths jagged diagonal lines.
Turn off Active Contrast. (Dynamic contrast) - brighter images get brighter and darker images get even darker. It does throw off calibration as well.
Enhanced color gamut - the extra punch to the colors' saturation is nice, but I prefer to keep it turned off as well.
Colors are excellent, after calibration. As long as one looks straight ahead. From side angles, the picture becomes faded. But there's no hue shift so a VA panel, rather than TN is being used. IPS is best and, for the MSRP, I'd expect IPS to be used, but it's not a deal-breaker.
The other problem I have is that this set seems to take darker grays and show them as black - at a head-on angle. Even after calibration. If I look up or down by a few degrees, color starts to wash but the darker material become visible. This is a MINOR problem, and typical for VA panels (my previous computer monitor was VA and exhibited this as well), but worthy enough to mention. Even in TV shows, watching a police officer walk across the street, the black crush effect makes it look like a flat solid black image with head and arms. I've calibrated the set to minimize this, but this is where the set COULD do better. But it's still not a deal-breaker.
There are a TON of calibration options. Each is worth reading up on and optimizing.
When reading reviews to other sites, half of them don't provide any real details and the rest, while appearing to be technically competent, lack the level of spelling and grammatical acuity to be deemed "professional" - not to mention that one site will praise the set and the other will shrug it off entirely. But the best site of the bunch is found at flatpanelshd.com. http://www.flatpanelshd.com/review.php?subaction=showfull&id=1308733719 (they have a list of optimized calibration settings as well - definitely worth making a note of and trying out.)
They too mentions the pros and cons and, having compared example images they'd taken with others, the lower contrast ratio (meaning the darker display/crushed blacks) is indeed an issue with this set, but others have the same problem. Other sets with better contrast ratios and show it were found to have scores of other issues, so ultimately it's a toss-up: Lose out on a little contrast detail or live with more problems. I will live with the reduced contrast ratio. (and compare pics from various sets, the yellow subpixel in the Sharp DOES make a difference for warmer hues (oranges, yellows, golds, etc).)
All in all, this set is worthy of 4 stars. The idea of using a 4th subpixel is like adding extra colors to a printer to add more vibrant hues to print output, and the quality shows. Contrast ratio is slightly lacking, but is not a deal-breaker considering the pros this set has got. Ditto regarding viewing angle - despite the muted colors, it's not terribly bad and there's no hue shift and hue shift would drive me up the wall.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Looks, works GREAT!!
by Iamgr82day on April 30, 2012
Pros: Turns on and changes sources quickly (unlike our Sony... which is like watching paint dry). Great picture. Easy to set up. Very light and easy to hang on the wall by yourself. Super thin profile.
Cons: Nothing really comes to mind... no problems yet.
Summary: Most average consumers should find this tv an exceptional value. It has everyting I cared about when buying this TV and some things that I have come to like from ...

A wonderful mix of features and quality
by Pantomorphic_Pixels on September 6, 2011

Picture Control: Tweak nearly any setting from the standard and advanced picture settings. A staggering amount of control for the tech nuts or a great picture out of the box with the presets for the lessCons: Sadly, no company has made a technology to know what YOU like compared to another buyer, so setup will take some of the more picky users additional adjustment for motion and pixel settings. Summary: A wonderful mix of features and quality in a compact package perfect for bedrooms and smaller living rooms. Im very happy with my purchase for the wonderful picture quality & contrast, clean looking thin bezel and deep features if I want to tweak the picture to my liking.
I apologize that some of my review above was cutoff.
On all the sources I have tested (FiOS HD Cable, Blu-ray, XBOX360, Windows 7 PC & Mac) the quality of the picture is bright, with high contrast with minimal artifacts (except where present because of the source material or cable service) and like many good LED tv's is truly a standout with Blu-ray. When testing with great source material like Tron: Legacy and Dispicable Me this tv really shines showing off tremendous detail, clarity and depth. Make no mistake, there are better pictures out there, but you may have to go upwards of 1200 dollars to get it. If you are looking for display accuracy, you may want to look at those TVs in the elite price range, but if you want a 2D TV with stunning picture and detail for you and your family in a 40" package you can't go wrong with this set.
Notes:
* Many stores are now selling this model well below its list price making it a great value compared to other manufactures models at the same price.
* Some buyers may want to turn off the bright "upside down V" used for the power indicator in the settings menu if this bothers you. But its nice that they let you do this.

Summary: I bought this set at Best Buy for 599. I already own a Samsung UN55c6900, and love it. I wanted to get a second TV for the bedroom. The Samsungs were a bit more expensive, so I went with this model. I think the picture quality is just as good as my Samsung. My wife says she thinks the Sharp has a better picture.
