The good: Innovative automatic power-off feature saves energy; extremely energy-efficient; matte screen works well in brighter rooms; relatively accurate color; solid Internet services including Netflix, Amazon Video, and numerous niche videos; snappy menu system.
The bad: Reproduces lighter black levels; darker areas tinged blue; cannot adjust dejudder processing much; less-even screen uniformity; Netflix image quality worse than on other streaming devices.
The bottom line: Sony's midrange edge-lit LED-based LCD is nothing special from an image quality standpoint, but its Internet video and eco-friendliness will attract a lot of buyers.

Decent Pic/Audio: A Step Above My LCD HDTV
by mapinpa on August 5, 2010
Pros: No glare (vs. comparable Samsung LED TVs). Front mounted speakers provide better sound quality. Better/sharper picture than a regular LCD. Super thin. More energy efficient.
Cons: Menu is somewhat cumbersome to navigate. Lack of built-in Wifi. Not as sleek-looking as the Samsung.
Summary: I compared this set to the Samsung and I noticed no glare (Samsung had way too much glare). Front mounted speakers provide better sound quality vs. the Sammie. Bought as ...
Summary: I compared this set to the Samsung and I noticed no glare (Samsung had way too much glare). Front mounted speakers provide better sound quality vs. the Sammie. Bought as a floor model for several hundred less than typical retail so I'm pleased overall. This is a good step up from a conventional LCD TVand Sony added some add'l features (such as a internet TV, swivel stand and modestly upgraded remote, and auto-off). It's not a top of the line TV but it's far from a budget model and is definitely worth considering. I shop w. my eyes and ears when buying a TV and I don't think you can go wrong w. Sony quality/reliability (or a Samsung, too).

You missed a feature...
by austinallen on April 25, 2010
Pros: I love my 40EX700 and agree with all of your review, except you stated the series does not offer Pandora as a music option. Maybe I got lucky and my TV is one of a kind, I doubt it, but the EX700 series does in fact offer Pandora as an option.
Cons: Poor black levels and very little control over the Motion Flow settings.
Summary: Great television, awesome picture, super thin and very stylish.

Stay Away No Product Support
by coolmiester on April 6, 2012
Pros: Nice Picture, Super Thin
Cons: Internet freezes, Video Streaming never worked good even with a wired 100mb connection. The TV restarts every 5 mins. They no longer stock the parts needed to fix it.
Summary: Bought a $4000 Sony TV 5 years ago. It died and was deemed unrepairable after 3 1/2 years . Sony offered a replacement TV for $350 bucks ( a $1000 TV) ...
Summary: Bought a $4000 Sony TV 5 years ago. It died and was deemed unrepairable after 3 1/2 years . Sony offered a replacement TV for $350 bucks ( a $1000 TV) although a big downgrade, I was satisfied. This TV just died short of 2 years old and they no longer carry the parts to fix it. 2 YEARS OLD AND THEY DON'T CARRY THE REPLACEMENT PARTS! They again offered me a refurbished replacement tv at $679 & tax. I checked and this TV sells NEW at Best buy for 799. Sony has seen the last penny from me. BEWARE OF SONY!!!! They do not stand behind their products.

Pros: eco friendliness, internet connectivity and overall product quality
Cons: blooming in screen in darkened room, side viewing angle washes out picture..an IPS screen would be ideal like I have on my Viera in my bedroom. This HDTV is a reliable workhorse. Online firmware updating is awesome.
Summary: Superb Sony HDTV as I am very pleased with the overall product with its eco-friendly features and internet capability. I have never owned any product like it before and will ...

Bland picture. Doesn't work with Wii.
by rjbnewwest on December 29, 2010
Pros: Nothing muc to like. Picture ok if you find others too bright and don't care about Wii compatibility or customer support.
Cons: Incompatibility with Wii was the deal breaker for us, plus Sony's unfriendly, hard to reach customer support. We exchanged for a Samsung, better in every way.
Summary: We initially bought this TV thinking Sony's the premium brand, though it cost $100 more than Samsung and others. Since our kids love their Wii, we were unhappy to ...
Summary: We initially bought this TV thinking Sony's the premium brand, though it cost $100 more than Samsung and others. Since our kids love their Wii, we were unhappy to find that the Sony just isn't compatible -- it processes the signal from the Wii remote very slowly and there's an obvious delay in cursor movement on screen, and often it freezes. Not a problem with the Wii, which works fine with the new Samsung LED LCD TV we got instead. The Samsung also has a brighter picture. What really surprised me was Sony's poor customer support -- they were hard to reach, lacked knowledge, and simply decreed that there must be something wrong with our Wii, even though I told them it worked fine with our previous Sony TV but not this new one. What a contrast with the customer service at Samsung, who were easy to reach, pleasant, and obviously familiar with how their TVs work with the Wii., and happy to asure me that their TV would worrk with the Wii, which it does, perefectly. Nintendo were also easy to reach and helpful. But not Sony! I've had a succession of Sony TVs over the last 20 years and have never minded paying a bit more for what I thought was better quality. Never again.

TV Picture failed just after warranty ended
by dpv56 on April 23, 2010
Pros: Nice interface, reasonably fast digital channel changes.
Cons: My Bravia 40" LCD TV had half the screen display fail just after the warranty ended. SONY would not stand behind their product. The product is basically unusable.
Summary: SONY obviously has a design flaw or manufacturing quality problem. I expected more from SONY. I recommend choosing a different manufacturer.
