CNET editors' blog post

The Sony KDL-V4100 series was introduced in the spring of 2008. It consists of the 40-inch KDL-40V4100, the 46-inch KDL-46V4100, and the 52-inch KDL-52V5100.
CNET did not review any of these models, but we did review a similar product, the Sony KDL-46W4100, that may give you an idea of how the KDL-V4100 will perform. The V4100 has a slightly lower contrast ratio (3,000:1 vs. 2,500:1) than the W4100, so it will probably display lighter black levels. It also lacks 120Hz processing. For more information, refer to the full review of the Sony KDL-46W4100.
For 2009 Sony has released a replacement of this TV, the KDL-V5100 series, that we did review.

Good Value...Not the XBR4
by miami1lt on May 22, 2008
Pros: Light Weight, Sleek, Easy-to-use-Menu, Good picture
Cons: Awkward Cinemotion, Screen Jutter, Backlight is all or nothing

I ...Summary: I would like caveat this and saying that I have a 52" Sony Bravia XBR4 for our family room, and I will try to keep from comparing them unreasonably...
I purchased this 40" Bravia 40V4100 for our bedroom yesterday from Best Buy (included PS3 and Service Install--which I waived anyway).
First overall impression was how light and sleek it was...the XBR is a bit bulkier and certainly heavier due to size...my wife and I easily carried this up 2 flights of stairs without issue.
Hook up was easy, and having 4 HDMI ports (3 back x 1 side) is really nice as well...if you have more than 4 HDMI things running into a TV, you probably shouldn't have a 40" Bravia...you should have something much bigger and better.
Turned it on and all was good. At first, the center of the screen was blurry, but I chalked that up to the Backlight getting warmed up...it did go away after a few minutes. The TV took about 1 hour or so to actually present a decent picture as well (almost looked static-like on HD channels, but that slowly went away).
Hooked up the PS3, and popped in a blu-ray. Good picture, but nowhere close to the XBR4. The V4100 series uses Cinemotion, which helps smooth transitions. It also accepts 1080p/24fps, which PS3 puts out. However, I would say that my Samsung BD-P1400 and XBR4 puts out a better upscaled DVD picture than the PS3 + V4100 utilizing 1080p/24fps.
I will give it a few days, and hopefully the break-in will allow it to be sharper, but I did already notice the cinemotion on the V4100 is not nearly as smooth. The opening scene to "Night at the Museum" is my test bed. On the XBR4, the opening scene looks like you are actually inside the museum. The characters are so life like, it is almost disturbing...Definitely NOT the case with the V4100.
Also, backlight adjustments go in large incriments. Changing from 2 to 3 makes it MUCH brighter...I found it hard to settle on a backlight/brightness strength...
Overall, average to slightly above average first impression. I would offer this up:
If you are looking to spend somewhere between $1000-1400 for a 40" TV, this would be a great choice. If you are looking for a larger screen in the same range, Phillips, Samsung and Insignia would be some decent choices.
If you are willing to spend the money, and are shooting for straight up quality, go with the XBR4/5 series. I'm half tempted to spend the extra $800 to upgrade--the other half of my temptation is tempered by my wife
Will add an update if my opinion changes significantly.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great HDTV while some SD shows color overexposure
by loungelizard77 on August 6, 2009
Pros: 1. It displays HDTV programming well--sharp with good color.
2. Above average sound performance from TV speakers.
3. You can regulate the volume directly from the TV when external speakers are being used. In other words, no extra remote to grab.Cons: The factory picture settings causes some of the color in standard TV programming to be overly bright/exposed. A minor adjustment of the picture controls is needed.
Summary: Overall, this Sony model is a bargain for its performance. I wish I could have had a professional tweak the picture controls [for free], so that standard TV programming wouldn'...
Summary: Overall, this Sony model is a bargain for its performance. I wish I could have had a professional tweak the picture controls [for free], so that standard TV programming wouldn't be so bright.
Then again, I had to go through two defective models from questionable brands (Dynex and Insignia) before I decided on this Sony. -

Summary: love my new tv and all of its features especially the menu screen(reminds me of my psp). i shopped around when my visio 32' called it quits and i kid you not i chose this over a LG with 50,000-1 contrast ratio and it was a 42' plus it cost less! the sound from this tv is pretty good with the built in amp that i somtimes turn off my home theatre system and let the tv do its thing.sure sony makes better lcd's but if yoyr not made out of money like me then this is the best tv for under $1,000 .

Sony makes quality HDTV
by lionel-leon on May 1, 2009
Pros: Great picture and good connectivity, 4 HDMI ports, 1080p full high definition making it a great HDTV choice. I recommend you to check out http://www.squidoo.com/best-hdtv for information on what best and cheapest HDTV to buy for 2009.
Cons: Samsung are still slightly superior in the overall performance and customer rating.
Summary: I think both Samsung and Sony makes great LCD TVs.

Another cloudy TV
by vimmryan on March 21, 2009
Pros: Excellent HD picture.
Cons: Clouds, This is the last Sony TV I ever buy because of these clouds. I got a replacement for my clouded TV and they sent me one with clouds. The white clouds make the TV useless when the background is black...
Summary: Get another brand this TV is not worth it.

Excellent purchase for excellent quality
by Treejet on February 17, 2009
Pros: Contrast ratio is astounding and glare reduction works great in a room that has three double windows. Easily recognized by my video card (NVIDIA 8600 gt). Picture quality is amazing.
Cons: none found so far.
Summary: Amazing price for a great product. It's a sony, so the warranty is excellent and you shouldn't have to worry about it breaking.

Very nice picture - and bargain for $969 SEARS
by Cattnip on December 17, 2008
Pros: Incredible picture - I am sold on the Sony products. Easy to set up and use right out of the box. I think the blacks are bit better than the 3000 - but that could be just where I have it.
Cons: The frame and finish of the unit seems a bit "cheaper" in looks - compared to the 3000 from last year and the sound dosen't seem quite as good. Pretty minor concerns - really a nice TV overall
Summary: If you can find an old stock KDL40V3000 - I would buy it first! Otherwise If you can pick KDL40V4100 on sale - DO IT! It will beat TV's ...

Summary: I have this TV in my bedroom, it is definitly one of those TVs you want to buy if your a kid who is about to leave for college or in college about to leave. i will be going to college next year and this is the PERFECT tv for it. It works well in living rooms and bedrooms. I hooked my blu ray player up too it and you truly felt like you were in the movie! if you had to pick a TV for around $1000 this is the TV you would want. I went to the store thinking i would get the samsung 50 inch for the same price but after talking to the TV specialist he made me understand that you DO NOT want a 720p tv and you should be back around 12 feet with a 50 inch.
so summarize my wall of text. Please buy this tv it is great and i am very happy with it. -
