Sony Bravia KDL-46EX700 price range: $1,199.00 - $2,897.91

The good: Innovative automatic power-off feature saves energy; extremely energy-efficient; matte screen works well in brighter rooms; relatively accurate color; solid Internet services including Netflix, Amazon Video, and numerous niche videos; snappy menu system.
The bad: Reproduces lighter black levels; darker areas tinged blue; cannot adjust dejudder processing much; less-even screen uniformity; Netflix image quality worse than on other streaming devices.
The bottom line: Sony's midrange edge-lit LED-based LCD is nothing special from an image quality standpoint, but its Internet video and eco-friendliness will attract a lot of buyers.

Great HDTV with lots of options and good PQ.
by prpctech on June 8, 2010
Pros: Very good contrast, lots of PQ adjustments. HD programming really pops out of the screen. Like the WI-FI internet streaming music, pics video from PC (G...gle TV). O.K. menu and ability to customize. Lots of inputs and easy hookup to receiver.
Cons: Too little inputs for me (I am a PC AV geek). Non-HD OTA programming is a bit fuzzy, but is fine when played from 480p AV source. The sound due to the thinness of the TV is bed unless adjustment. If you do not get a deal then the price is a bit high

Summary: Overall it is a great TV and so far it is the best compromise between Picture Quality and all of the features. I read about and looked at many HDTVs and some had a great set of features, but the PQ was not good. The contrast or color shifts were too much when viewed from the angle. Some had wonderful PQ, but the features and ability to adjust or number of inputs were few and far between. In the class of side lit 46" LED LCD TVs this one is offers good to excellent PQ and good bang for the buck on options. Oh, sure there are better HDTVs, but you have to step into another class, but at this point it is all economics unless you got money to burn.

Great Picture!!! Horrible Back lighting!!!!!!!!!
by MisfitFly on February 1, 2011
Pros: Picture Quality, Internet Apps, Sony Menu
Cons: Back lighting. Flashlighting, Edge (first 6"-10") of screen is always brighter. Especially evident when viewing darker scenes.
Summary: I purchased this TV for $750. Hated it. Returned it after 4 days. I thought maybe I could adjust the settings to make it better. Nope. I could not live ...

Black & White = 9
The 52EX700 is capable of displaying a very dark black. Blacks are darker than my previous 2006 model television, and at least as dark as the best LCD sets from last year. Katzmaier has said it's not as dark as some of the current competition. Frankly, I have a hard time seeing how. In daylight or with any room lighting, the black areas of the screen are completely black. In a darkened room, if you're watching a black screen, a tiny bit of light is evident. But who besides a professional TV reviewer sits in a darkened room watching a black screen? To the human eye, on any real program material, the blacks are effectively at zero light output. Any way you slice it, this set was more than bright enough to watch during the day, and it was more than dark enough for the black level not to be an issue at night. The contrast ratio is quite high, and the image has a lot of "pop."
Color = 9
Colors are vibrant but not cartoonish. It was easy to get them dialed in to a pleasing, natural looking palette by changing the "temperature" to its warmest setting. White Balance controls afford more chances to tweak the color.
Processing = 8
Overall, processing was good. I never noticed even one instance of motion blur, whether I was watching sports, drama, or action-packed Blu-Ray movies. There is no video lag, regardless of picture settings, which is very important for video gaming. Detail can be very strong even at lower "Sharpness" settings. This picture is a bit noisier in dark areas than my old SXRD set close up, but this noise is invisible at normal viewing distances. I noticed a few jagged edges in nearly horizontal lines on Blu-Rays (grates and fences can be torture tests for digital televisions). Standard definition performance is not going to win any awards, but it is perfectly acceptable. Just remember, garbage in=garbage out. You can only polish a turd so much, as they say.
Build Quality = 7
The cabinet is understated and stylish, with a thin "metallized" gray strip below a shiny black bezel. The set is impressively thin, but not so thin that jacks are laid out in a less easy-to-access sideways orientation. I wish the input jacks had been closer to the center of the rear, but they are laid out nicely. The included stand swivels, and keeps the television stable. The screen is a matte finish (thank goodness), and does a decent job of attenuating reflections from the room (this really helps during the day, and with floor lamps). The LED edge-lighting does lead to a small bit of "flash light effect" near the edges of the screen, but it is not really noticeable on normal material. The "Achilles Heel" of this set is viewing angle - the image washes out a fair amount more than 45 degrees to either side of center (90 degrees total), and more than 30 degrees vertically (60 degrees total). This is, however, pretty common for LCD sets. It is neither the best or worst in this regard.
Feature Set = 10
Until "Google TV" equipped sets come out next year, the EX700 is tops in terms of internet features. Netflix, Amazon VOD, and Youtube streaming are the stars, and they all work well. When connection speed was good, I could not discern any difference in picture quality between Netflix streamed directly to the EX700 and Netflix on the PS3. Also extremely impressive is the implementation of TV Guide for over-the-air HD signals. The TV downloaded listings based on Zip Code, and only displayed a schedule for channels I had selected as "Shown." The VGA PC input works perfectly, and the image is automatically scaled to fit the screen perfectly, with no overscan or loss of fidelity with text. The only feature that really fails to impress is Picture in Picture, as it is limited to PCs with HDMI inputs, and component input devices (like older DVD players). This renders it effectively useless, since you cannot twin it with broadcast material.
**
All told, this set rates a 43 on my scale of 50. On CNET's rigorous scale, it's a 4 (excellent). My dad has a Samsung UN55B8000, a very comparable edge-lit LED set, which performs similarly, but offers fewer features. I would rate that set 9/9/8/8/7, for a total of 41. My 50A2000, a rear projection SXRD set, would rate 9/10/9/5/6, for a 39 (the 5 is for its unreliability and the irritation of replacing lamps). The Insignia set I helped my grandmother purchase for her kitchen would rate 7/6/6/8/6 for a 33. So anything over 40 is very likely a solid all-around performer with good features.
Given the CNET review of this set, I was not expecting to like it as much as I did, and I was prepared for some compromises. Well, I guess pleasant surprises come in slim packages. It is above average, pure and simple. This is an uncompromisingly good television with only a few minor flaws, mostly endemic to LCD tvs. Its greatest strengths are its robust online offerings and its extremely punchy contrast ratio.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Solid quality from KDL-40EX700
by aortetga on December 11, 2010
Pros: I have had the Sony KDL-40EX700 for over 10 months now and I simply love the sharp picture, bright colors, and ease of use.
Cons: It would have been nice if Sony included Wi-Fi capability out of the box versus having to buy an adapter. I'm ok since I have Roku and Apple TV.
Summary: Sony continues to manufacture quality products and you can't go wrong with a mid-level Sony HDTV.

Great TV with great features

Cons: menu interface could be a little easier

I will start this review by saying I am by no means an expert on tv picture quality. I love watching movies, sports, tv shows, blu rays, and playing video games. Many of the reviews on here are talking about the black levels, uniformity, etc... I think the picture is great for the price, and most of us average joes will find this tv perfect for their needs.
I spent months reading reviews and researching before I bought it. Important factors to me were a reliable name brand, picture quality, size, viewing angles, and energy efficiency.
-You really can't go wrong with the bravia line. Somer of the lower end models aren't the best picture, but theyre are all reliable.
-As I mentioned before, the picture quality is great if you're not a tv snob. And i've had plenty of friends come and watch, and they were all impressed.
-I ended up purchasing the 52 inch. I originally wanted to go with a 60 inch tv, but in the end the price increase didn't justify the extra 8 inches (thats what she said). The 52 ended up being the perfect size for my living room, 60 would have been a tad too large
-Viewing angles and reflection were important for me since i have a lot of windows. This tv as a matte finish so watching in a bright room isn't a huge problem. I can also watch from any angle without an issue.
-A feature I love is the energy efficiency. My electric bill has stayed very low. The tv comes with a motion sensor that will turn it off if you leave the room. Its kind of annoying when youre sitting still to watch a movie and it goes off. I can just turn off the feature- but I like have a reminder as to how much time i'm wasting being lazy lol.
The internet features are a very nice bonus. the menus to get to them can get a little frustrating but theyre not awful. i purchased the 701 model at BJS which came bundles with the wireless adaptor so I didnt need to purchase it seperately. I mainly use youtube and pandora. theres also lots of connectivity options. plenty of usb, hdmi, and other outputs. I can also use DLNA to wirelessly share files between my droid x and the tv (which was on the difficult side to figure out)
I can't speak for sound quality since I purchase a sony soundbar. The 2 systems work flawlessly together and it was worth it for another $300.
I purchased the tv from BJ's for $1400 which I believe is a pretty good deal. I'm sure there will be some better prices coming up for black friday. Overall, I would definitely recommend this tv. -
TV is good for anything except watching images on it.
by christosd on October 6, 2010
Pros: It looks great, has great connectivity for me. Was easy to set up for on-line content. Still frame picture accuracy and colour looks great to me.
Cons: I hate the back lighting. Any image involving sky, grass, or large blocks of textured colour which is panned then highlights unevenness that looks like a massively dirty camera lens. I hate this TV.

Sony buyer beware

Summary: I purchased Sony?s previous 46? model, KDL-46VL130. The picture started distorting when the TV was 2.5 years old. The estimate from Sony?s recommended service provider was for $2.3K, $100 more than the original cost of the TV. The service technician mentioned that he had the same model TV and had the exact same problem. The tech also said the 46? model that preceded the KDL-46VL130 also has the same problem. When I contacted Sony, they said the warranty stood at 18 months and would not be extended.
At the time of purchase, the Sony was one of the more expensive TV?s, but it had the best picture (not anymore, check out Samsung?s picture, and it?s less expensive). When you consider the terribly-short life of the TV, Sony?s are a terrible purchase.
Good luck! -
Don't watch in a dark room!
by mrk94117 on August 22, 2010
Pros: The TV tuner was amazing.
Blu-ray picture clarity was fantastic especially after applying the CNET calibration settings.Cons: Screen uniformity was awful. Watching at night there were two large white cloudy (flashlight) patches in the top left and bottom left corners. It was really obvious, especially watching a wide-screen, darker movie like the Matrix.
Summary: I realized that the reason I bought the TV was so that I could watch movies after the kids had gone to bed. I tried to ignore the clouding issues ...
Summary: I realized that the reason I bought the TV was so that I could watch movies after the kids had gone to bed. I tried to ignore the clouding issues but after about 20 days use I sent the TV back and bought a 46" HX800 on sale, which is wonderful and exhibits none of the clouding issues.
