CNET editors' blog post
By David Katzmaier, 06/26/09
The Sony KDL-V4100 series was introduced in the spring of 2008. It consists of the 40-inch KDL-40V4100, the 46-inch KDL-46V4100, and the 52-inch KDL-52V5100.
CNET did not review any of these models, but we did review a similar product, the Sony KDL-46W4100, that may give you an idea of how the KDL-V4100 will perform. The V4100 has a slightly lower contrast ratio (3,000:1 vs. 2,500:1) than the W4100, so it will probably display lighter black levels. It also lacks 120Hz processing. For more information, refer to the full review of the Sony KDL-46W4100.
For 2009 Sony has released a replacement of this TV, the KDL-V5100 series, that we did review.

Best HDTV for the First-Time Buyer
by pdehkordi on August 14, 2008
Pros: meets all the video and broadcast standards for the next 8 years, at low price, with a high quality brand name
Cons: Lacks Sony's Motionflow? 120Hz

Summary: I did extensive research in HDTV before purchasing this. I only move into a new technology once the standards are supported, the key features have been tested, and the prices have become "stable." I then purchase on Quality, Longevity and "Real" Features. In HDTV this equates to features visible by average eye, and features that are not rapidly out-dated. If you share the same philosophy, then this is the right 46" HDTV. It will support all your needs until 2014. It meets the current EDTV and HDTV broadcast standards(480,720p,1080i) and supports future 1080p format that will take you well into the next decade.

Amazing picture quality and great value
by afgdelmar on June 21, 2009
Pros: The picture quality well exceeded our family's expectation. The colors are briliant, crisp and clean. It is a real pleasure to watch.
The control is easy to use and is very functional.Cons: Purchased the Sony one week ago and have nothing to complain about.

Summary: Was considering a Samsung until I noticed FRY's was running a one day special on this Sony for $899. After reading the CNET users comments on the Samsung and Sony TVs I went immediately to my local Best Buy (who honored Fry's ad) and purchased the Sony that same day. Setup was easy.
Our family is amazed by the pictutre qualiy and is even better than our existing Sony 55" KDS.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

My first HDTV
by dillroy333 on August 22, 2008
Pros: Connectivity, quality of picture, menu options, and sound.

Summary: I didn't know what I was getting at first because of the overwhelming amount of information out there about tv's. But when I got it narrowed down some, I finally went to the store. I expected to buy the KDL-46S4100 but I got the V series instead because just by looking at the two, I could see a world of difference. Anyway, I talked the sales person into getting the "V" for only $100 more plus an expensive additional 2 year warranty which I hope I won't need. I got it home and I was blown away! I thought I had my surround system hooked up until I checked the receiver and realized that it was just the TV! I get the PC input I need for my laptop and other high quality inputs for stuff I don't even have yet...future proof! The menu is somewhat complicated at first but I like the layout and backlight feature. I love the VIVID setting for my currently limited 1080i & 720p HD channels. I noticed pixelated images during fast paced sports which I thought was because of the refresh rate. However, after some research I found that this is probably because of the content provider compressing the images. I still haven't seen what this TV is fully capable of. but what I HAVE seen so far is awesome! I can't wait to get an adequate DVD player for this thing and start watching some 1080p DvD's!

Summary: I received this model as a replacement TV when are first TV was deemed to costly to fixed. We just had to purchase the Extended warranty plan wish I was happy to do. This is an excellent TV at an affordable price and our family has been nothing but pleased with it. I know it only 60HZ but I haven't seen it lacking in anyway.

Buy the TV, plain and simple!

Summary: This HDTV is very nice. It looks great on the outside and has good form factor. Not overly bezeled and clad with panels and trimmings. It even has neat floating indicator lights on the lower part of the panel in the glass. Visually, the TV is top notch. It creates rich blacks for an LCD and the contrast ratio is more than adequate to pull of any scene from any source. The TV has loads of adjustments and enhancements that are not available on the lower line units like the S-series. You can tweak nearly every aspect of video detail to get it just the way you like and you WILL need to spend some time to get it just right. the video engine makes short work of even the most demanding scenes and transitions. I noticed zero pixelations or artifacts attributed to the display (as opposed to the source quality) and edge to edge quality and consistency is supreme as are the nearly 180 (178) degree viewing angles. even before adjustments the color response and accuracy was very well executed. The ingenius menu system will make navgating through the options easy. Some have complained about the menu system but it is actually pretty intuitive.
The TV has more than enough inputs, including 4 HDMIs, which was one of the last generation V-series' short comings (only 2 HDMI on the V3000). The location of the input jack panel isn't exactly TV stand-friendly, as it is offset to the far side of the TV set. That means you have to run your wire connections across the rear of the set, through the cable guide, and then down the center of the entertainment/TV stand. That makes cleaning up the clutter more of a challenge. The V3000 series TVs had a jack panel more centrally located which facilitated a cleaner wire bundle; anal home theater buffs, please be advised!
The TV stand is a lot cleaner and pleasing to look at. The remote control now has controls for BRAVIA-link hardware which reduces remote clutter and DMe hardware works through the TV's XMB menu system! the romote itself is clean, light weight and has an uncluttered style with the buttons being the right size and having a good tactile feel.
There is full support of all resolutions and supports 1080/24p. The processor and display are both 10-bit. The MotionFlow 60hz system works just like 120hz on the Z-series but I haven't noticed an apreciable difference between the two. MotionFlow in general tends to add an almost unrealistically smooth and clear look to the content and may take some getting used to. Luckily you can scale it back a bit depending on your content/preferences. The inputs each have their own memory for all the changes you make so there is no need to always re-adjust your picture settings and tweaks every time you change sources.
The picture-n-picture has lmited use as you cannot pick your own sources for the two windows. You are locked into the Tuner on one window. That oversight in design practically renders the feature useless to digital cable/satellite users as they (we) don't need the on-board tuner. Silly really because the old Wega TVs (not to mention RCA, Sharp) allowed you to pick your own sources for the big and little windows. Another Sony shortfall is the lack of a 2nd RF input. Those who want off-air HD signals and have standard cable are S.O.L. You need to pick the one most important, buy a signal switcher, or constantly switch the antenna for the coaxial on your own. They can put a man on the moon but two RF jacks...
some have complained about sound quality but given the source, the sound is as good as it can be for tiny 10w speakers. You want rich dynamic sound..., get an audio receiver. No self-respecting home theatre owner watches movies through the TV speakers anyway. The TV does support 5.1 PCM pass-through to the optical output for hooking up to an audio receiver.
All in all, this is a great LCD HDTV despite its nit-picky flaws. I would certainly recommend it for its awesome quality and visual appeal. -
Great LCD that performs well for the price....

Pros: Good contrast, great performance, decent price,...just can't beat the bravia technology.

Summary: Whether you are new th the HDTV/LCD, or an experienced buyer, this LCD is a good performer at a reasonable price. Not the cheapest on the shelf, but out performs a lot of the competitors. Don't be fooled by the specs alone...take a look at the LCD's in action. Some say they have a high contrast, true 24 frames per second, and good sound and a bright clear picture, but in person...not so much. If you are thinking about purchasing this LCD, do it, you won't be dissappointed.

Summary: This replaces a 720p model (Kdl-46s3000). I was dubious that the 1080p would make that much difference, but it does and I am a believer now. I am a Sony fan and this set lives up to my expectations. Good blacks, realistic colors (when adjusted) and good sound on regular TV (although I use an audio receiver for sound and that is always superior if you can do it). My set does not have flash lighting or clouds. Another surprise on this set was the TV Guide. I have used this feature in the past and it was clunky, but this is a more refined version and very usable. There is no fee for the service. The set has 4 HDMI inputs but lacks a second antenna input so you have to decide to use the one there is for either cable or antenna. I would prefer one input for antenna and one for cable. The menu system is extensive so can be hard to navigate but the manual explains everything pretty well so not a big drawback. The menu graphics are excellent. I have seen some complaints on the Web about sparklies in the new Sonys but my set doesn't have any, but this may be something to look for if you are concerned. My rating is eight out of 10 stars (I don't think any set is perfect enough to merit 10), but I could have easily given it nine. Like I said, I have a bias to Sonys so I wanted to be as fair as possible.

A Great HD From Sony.

Summary: Its great to get the first crack at a review and I am honored to be reviewing this great HD tv from Sony. This set has replaced my excellent Samsung 32inch HD tv why? Because its 1080p and if you are going to go Blu Ray you need 1080p in my book. Second I wanted to go bigger and this is all I need in that department. First the pros. This tv has it all in my book. Excellent picture quality, great colors, good sound and its a nice attractive set that would be a great addition to any home decor. The sound aint all that great but really what HD tv has really great sound? I have YET to hear one that has great sound. Now the cons. I really dont know if this is a "con" or not but this tv is very heavy, more heavier then I thought it would be. So you will need 2 people to help you set this thing on an entertainment center or tv stand. I know I had to have my dad help me. I guess you might say thats what you get for a big tv and I aint no incredieble hulk! The second con I have is with the menue. At times its hard to navigate thru and figure out but with a little studying and reading the manuel you should get the hang of it, I did. So thats why I gave it a 9 instead of a 10. Heavy and hard menue to navigate thru and understand. Actually it should be a 9 1/2 because you cant really count the weight as a con but I did......
Bottom line is though its a great HDTV with everything you need to watch HD tv and Blu Ray. Sony has proven to me WHY they are the industrie leaders in the HD feild and from now on I wont buy any other brand. If you can afford the price and if your looking for a big tv that comes from an industry leader then look no further then Sony's BIG KDL-46V4100. Thier BXR series is nice and pretty with a few more bells and whistles but I think this big boy is right up thier with them. And its not hard to undertsand why. Its from Sony! Of course.
