Excellent product at a reasonable price - finally.

Pros: Excellent picture, easy to use. Sound is pretty good for a (relatively) flat screen.

Summary: Have been looking for over a year and was tempted by various Samsungs and Panasonics, but kept coming back to this Sony. Decided against Samsung because of quality control (looking at Amazon users) and poor sound. The Panny didn't seem right - a bit too dim, plus I am new to this and a bit skittish about their customer service (Amazon reviews again) and plasma in general (though the P46G10 seems like a great deal for the right room).

My local dealer matched Best Buy's price of $1999.98, Since the set does not swivel, I got a Sanus swivel stand. Total out-the-door price including sales tax, swivel stand, set-up (hooking Sony up to cable box, making appropriate adjustments to the Sony, assembling the swivel stand, etc.), and moving old heavy tube tv upstairs (and hooking it up to cable) was ~ $2250. Have had the set for about 4 days - great so far.
I adjusted the tv settings to those given by CNETat the end of their blogpost on the 55XBR8 - so far so good. I will tweak as I see fit and get more used to the set. But it is perfect for my room which is a closed in porch and has 18 windows on 3.5 walls - the tv is against the 0.5 wall without glass. Virtually no reflection off the tv screen. The sound from the tv itself is fine, much better than Samsung & Panasonic. I just added an old set of Altec Lansing computer speakers (satellites & sub) to the (variable) audio out and it sounds great to me - no need for a receiver, etc. (Am an audiophile, but not a home theater enthusiast, so the good audio is in a separate room.)
I do not notice any loss in off-angle viewing, but we don't really deviate by more than 30 degrees off center. Briefly tried a plain old DVD (Brideshead Revisited) in an old DVD player and it looked great. Standard definition is pretty good - some channels are just better than others, and like a good audio system, the Sony will show the flaws in a flawed source.
Finally this Sony is priced reasonably, I think, but stock is probably running low.
Have 6 months to decide to buy an extended warranty (5 year in-home for $329), but Sony gives 1.5 years and my VISA adds a year, so given Sony quality, am undecided about this (feedback would be much appreciated).

To JoeENH: It is the SANUS swivel stand. My dealer carried, but I see it is available online at variaos places. Enjoy the Sony!
