The good: The Sony XBR-HX929 series produces deeper black levels than any current LCD or plasma TV, giving excellent overall picture quality. It evinces accurate shadow detail and color; offers plenty of video processing options; and can properly handle 1080p/24 sources. It has a beautiful, thin-profile exterior design with Gorilla Glass, and its Internet suite includes numerous streaming services and widgets as well as built-in Wi-Fi. Its 3D image shows minimal crosstalk.
The bad: The extremely expensive XBR-HX929 shows some blooming artifacts, and its picture deteriorates more noticeably than usual when seen from off-angle. Its menu and Internet service design is lackluster, and Sony does not include 3D glasses. When displaying 3D, the image flickers when dejudder is turned off, and it deteriorates rapidly when you tilt your head.
The bottom line: One of the best-performing LED-based LCDs we've ever tested, the expensive local-dimming Sony XBR-HX929 competes well with the top plasmas.

I have no regrets! I am totally thrilled with thi Sony!
by bcfbasil on May 24, 2012
Pros: Near perfect picture. Black levels are amazing. Wireless built in - big plus! Easy setup! Gorilla glass is beautiful - keeps glare down. Power consumption is very low! Extensive internet content built-in.
Cons: Some off-angle blooming - not as bad as I had expected based on other reviews. Sound system is adequate, but only just. Needs a decent sound system and speakers. Menu is a little clunky. Pricy set, although I got it on sale for under $2800.

Summary: I have owned this set for two months now and absolutely love it. If it had lips, I would kiss it! After much research to replace our aging Hitachi rear-projection set, it came down to two possibilities: This Sony 55" XBR 929 or a 65" Panasonic VT30 Plasma set. I had heard that the Plasma set had an overall better picture - but in low light. I did an in-store comparison with a couple of DVDs I took with me. Honestly the Plasma did look a tiny bit better, but only when the lights were low. My problem was, we have a lot of ambient light in our LR and the Sony XBR looked much better in brighter lighting. Plus, the Sony uses about 1/3 the power to operate, which over time could result in significant savings. I had heard of sinificant blooming with off-axis viewing, but to be honest, I don't find it nearly as bad as has been reported in other reviews. My worst seat for viewing in my LR is about 30 degrees off axis, and I find it still quite watchable. Also, my set does not seem to have the "creases" I've read about - maybe just the luck of the draw. Bottom line: I could not be happier with this set. For an LED set, the picture quality is as close to Plasma as you can get.
CNet - Please post your recomended calibrated settings for the Sony XBR 929, thanks

Pros: HD & non HD Picture quality.
Connectivity with smartphones and other devices.
Easy/wide access to content.
3D quality.
Practical ease of use.Cons: Opera web browser (limited support to rich applications and video).
lack of backlighting on remote
extremely dark images in very dark lighting get harder to display well.
Price (still I believe it is worth the price). -
The Perfect TV I had been looking for!
by gimlifn on September 13, 2011
Pros: The picture clarity and deep blacks of the HX929 are just amazing. I reall was amazed just how rich and detailed the picture is. The features like having netflix are common for TV's of this caliber but it is a pro non the less. The remote in my opinion is
Cons: Now for the negatives well the first I would say is the panel does have a significant amount of glare if you have a window that light gets through in your home theatre room then it really shows up. I had to put up drapes to make sure no light got through

Summary: In my opinion Sony really hit it out of the park with this TV I was deciding between this TV and a Panasonic VT30 and I am really glad I got the HX929 but after all that is my opinion and the VT30 on the other hand is a great TV also I just thought this one looked better. The Motion 960 on this TV makes the 3D look crystal clear and the auto setting is actually and auto setting for picture backlight etc. is one of the few I have ever seen that I really could live with. If you are looking for a beautiful TV for a darker room and you want Great 3D picture along with outstanding 2D as well You really can't go wrong with the quality that Sony has packed into this TV.
