The good: Inexpensive; produces relatively deep black levels for an entry-level LCD; above-average selection of picture controls; adequate connectivity with two HDMI and two component-video inputs.
The bad: Less accurate color than some entry-level LCDs; some artifacts with 1080i sources; unremarkable styling; confusing remote and menu system.
The bottom line: While no style maven or template for reference color, the Toshiba AV502U series can do black levels better than most inexpensive LCDs.

All I wanted in my first HD LCD TV
by jchust on February 4, 2009
Pros: Good picture. Use with a digital amplified antenna as I do not have cable and the picture quality was clear etc. Use it mostly for Home Entertainment..ie. Video games and watching movies/dvd 's etc. Very good picture.
Cons: Cannot think of any.
Summary: One bonus that I did find...by mistake..or I just lucked out is that it has connections to hook-up the tv straight to your stereo. This was handy for ...
Summary: One bonus that I did find...by mistake..or I just lucked out is that it has connections to hook-up the tv straight to your stereo. This was handy for me as I do not have a "Home Theater" set-up and only have the old stereo system. So without to much to do...just hooked this feature up and viola...had great stereo sound output and made my own surround sound with what I had!

Good HDTV picture quality and service, but defective.
by zchen66 on January 9, 2009

Summary: I bought this TV set at an online retailer last Thanksgiving without returning policy. If it was turned on with low speaker volume, you can hear very annoying high-pitch humming noise coming from the back of TV. Then I called Toshiba customer service, and they friendly offered exchange without any charge to me.
The second set was delivered to me promptly. The back noise is still there but less loud than the first one. I played with the backlight setting and found out that the noise is loudest at 100% backlight and lowest at 0% backlight. However, setting backlight too low is not good for viewing. I set it to about 60% to compromise between viewing satisfaction and noise tolerance.
I checked their floor models at Best Buy and Circuit City, and couldn't hear that same noise even if the backlight is set to 100%.
So I believe the sets I got are defective. I called Toshiba again, and they kindly offered me return with full refund (though the refund will be about 2 months after they pick up my second set). Now I am waiting for their pick-up.
For picture quality, I think HDTV program looks pretty good, and its ATSC tuner is more sensitive than my 2005 Sony HDTV's tuner. But the SDTV program from a satellite receiver looks blurry and worse than the same program showing on my Sony, a 60' LCD rear-projection TV.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Surprisingly all I wanted in a TV
by simenson83 on January 22, 2010
Pros: For me because electronics are like second nature, it was relatively easy to set up. I love the regza-link that allows it to literally talk to other toshiba products like my laptop or dvd recorder.
Cons: Like most HDTVs the sound level is a bit low but easy to live with, it's plenty loud enough. If you aren't tech savvy it can be a little difficult to set-up, especially the regza-link. It only has 2 HDMI inputs.
Summary: Toshiba has outdid themselves with this product considering all the features you get at such a low price. The picture is great and the sound quality is acceptable. I cannot ...
Summary: Toshiba has outdid themselves with this product considering all the features you get at such a low price. The picture is great and the sound quality is acceptable. I cannot believe it's only 720p at 60hz!! I also appreciate being able to name the inputs, satellite or game-console is a lot more user friendly than hdmi 1 or Color stream 2

Surprisingly Good
by x.killeddestiny.x on December 28, 2009
Pros: Great black levels, very vibrant colours, light, lots of conections, toslink audio out, support for dollby digital souround, can handle a 1080p signal
Cons: None so far really besides my SD cable box giving a crap picture, but I don't really care seeing as I'm getting an HD digital cable box eventualy.
Summary: I'm shocked at all the low ratings on here. I beleive I have a slightly different model though, but still this is a great tv. I was amazed, and ...
Summary: I'm shocked at all the low ratings on here. I beleive I have a slightly different model though, but still this is a great tv. I was amazed, and still am, at the picture quality. It takes time to get used to actualy seeing a good picture. Although there could be more image adjustment controls, and settings I'm fine with what it has. I love how it has digital audio out so I can have my xbox games, and blu-ray movies play with souround sound. I've even used it to watch videos online and they looked good. It's light as well, and was extreamly easy to set up.
We'll see how the test of time is but compared to my old 32 inch Hitatchi CRT tv this thing is golden. It's better then my 42 inch Samsung LCD and the picture quality is nearly as good as my 55 inch Sony Bravia. For the price I don't think they get much better then this. -
Very Disapointed, a great buy for $300.00 however
by Packer21 on December 16, 2009
Pros: The picture and sound quality was very good and for a new TV with Toshiba's quality history, on sale for $300.00 I couldn't pass it up.
Cons: Not easy to set up. I had to go through two TV's while driving back and forh to two stores for a few days until I returned them. The channels werent working correctly.

Summary: As I said the TV was picture, sound qualtity was good, however I went through two TV's. I went through the channel memory with no problem however it took awhile. When I first turned the TV on to a regular channel it was fine when I switched to a HD channel it was fine however when I went back to the regular channel there was nothing but snow when I switched back to the HD channel again there was snow, I had to turn the TV off then back on again to get the picture back. Next day I brought it back for another one at one of there other locations and I had the same problem. I have cabel vision and I didn't have any problems setting up my three other different LCD tv's.
I even called Toshiba they were going to send me out a chip to upgrade the software and they said that if that didn't work I would need to bring it in for service. I opted to return it to the store, got a Samsung for $79.00 more and had no problem setting it up. I think there is something wrong with this model. -
Super while it worked then garbage.
by maxierac on October 20, 2009
Pros: Great picture, blacks have good depth.
Cons: Picture went out in less than 2 years. Could have been fixed with 2 lamps for the LCD panel, but Toshiba only sells the full panel which costs as much as the TV. I'll try to recycle, but Toshiba is not a very reasonable or green company.
Summary: I did a lot of research on the Toshiba Regza before buying. All the reviews were correct that the TV had a great picture and features for the price. But ...
Summary: I did a lot of research on the Toshiba Regza before buying. All the reviews were correct that the TV had a great picture and features for the price. But if you figure the price over less than 2 years of life, it isn't such a good deal. Dependability, ability to get appropriate parts and customer service are equally as important when spending the amounts needed to buy a LCD TV.

Defective Product from Toshiba Once Again
by aristonle on August 28, 2009
Pros: Light, compact
Cons: Breaks after 6 months. Toshiba makes you jump through hoops to have it repaired.

Summary: This was a replacement TV for a Toshiba Regza TV that I purchased that completely broke down after a year. This TV *also* broke after 6 months. So once again, I have to have this TV serviced and going through Toshiba's warranty service is a complete hassle. They give you phone numbers for service centers that don't exist anymore and other service centers won't allow you to bring in your item to be repaired unless you have a service order - which Toshiba will not provide you with over the phone. Two broken TVs have taught me that Toshiba makes unreliable products. I will not deal with this company again.

Summary: This tv should not have been made period. Im stuck with this garbage can! I will put it in a spare room as a showpiece and go buy a sony or samsung 40 inch 1080p to replace this .This was used for a bedroom . good thing i did not put this inplace of my sony widescreen. It may have a picture tube and be over 125lbs. But you will never get a picture any clearer than the old hd tubes. IMy tv is only 3 years old out of the box just a happy smile. The toshiba out of the box just miserable. Maybe ill sell it on ebay. It is so bad it gives me a head ache..maybe some one else would enjoy it..
