Buyer Beware - TV worked for only one week
by T_Creel on August 25, 2009
Pros: Beautiful picture while it lasted.
Cons: Toshiba Customer service does answer the phone quickly and we did get a in home service call within a few days, but they have yet to approve repair after almost 2 weeks.
Summary: This model seems to have a number of issues. See Toshiba's website http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/customersupport/notice_popup.asp?list=model&value=40xv645u&id=98. I ...

36 hour old Toshiba TV, awaiting technician service...
by debbiesoul on August 30, 2009
Pros: Nothing to say... picture would be great- aside of factory-relased defect...
Cons: TV had a Toshiba-known defect- had a maddening horizontal flickering white and black bar across the top. Also, set up was needlessly complicated, remote was cheap, sound quality is TERRIBLE! Customer service seriously hit or miss...

Summary: Purchased after much research. Picture was great- stunned to discover that the TV was part of a "small" percentage of defective sets- that had a maddening flickering black and white horizontal bar across the top of the screen. Found out about it only after searching the Toshiba site and reading the fine print comparing our serial number to that of the bad batch... Terrible customer service for the first attempt to remedy, was told we "did' something to the tv- had better luck with next try- told that Toshiba was aware of the issue and (like Microsoft and Apple) simply opted to release the sets and wait for customer complaints... Option: have technicial come out to fix (a 36hr old tv!) or return it with no guarantee of ending up with another defective set (what a pain!). Now looking to replace with our second choice- Sony. We were aware the sound wouldn't be that great on this (Toshiba) tv- but it is a LOT worse than we expected. TV set up menus were needlessly complicated, with a very cheap remote... seems like Toshiba is all about hype and not much on quality control (or quality period)...

Garbage TV by a Garbage manufacture! TV failed twice!!

Summary: I bought this Toshiba Regza 40XV645U TV in August 2009 and by Dec 2010 it was dead a SECOND TIME! the first time was in April of 2009 the bottom of the screen was all horizontal lines, I called Toshiba and had it looked at by a Toshiba certificated repair shop and sure enough the panel was bad and needed replacing.
The job was done and right away and two or three days after the TV was returned I noticed not just one or two dead pixels in the NEW panel, but a cluster of I would say ten or fifteen dead pixels in one area, but I figured it was ok i couldn't even notice it from the regular viewing distance so I lived with it.
Well now the panel is gone AGAIN! This time it's a vertical line to the center right of the screen, really noticeable when the screen goes a little darker. I called Toshiba a told them the story and was told I was out of luck, there was only a 90 day warranty on the NEW panel so I now have a $1000.00 dollar 16 month old conversation piece in my living room!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

better then samsung 6 series
by rx7obsessed on January 30, 2010
Pros: 120hz good contrast geat response time. 2ms respons in game mode. auto bightness with built in light sensor.
Cons: speakers are not good. would not recommend this for anyone who does not own a home theater system, it does however have both digital audio out and analog audio out for older amps so that is ok
Summary: bought the smasung 500 lcd 40' tv. brought it home and did not like only the 60hz. took that tv back and wanted the 610 samsung 40'. my buddy at ...
Summary: bought the smasung 500 lcd 40' tv. brought it home and did not like only the 60hz. took that tv back and wanted the 610 samsung 40'. my buddy at visions here showed me the problem with samsung 120hz tv's. if this is the reason your are getting the samsung 610 DONT BUY IT. its so bad i could not watch cable let alone a blue-ray movie. he then showed me this tv. what a difference. i like the auto adjusting bightness. my old plasma had this as well but it only did brightness. this tv in full auto mode will adjust backlight, color, brightness and, contrast based on room lighting. it also has one more very usefull trick up its sleeve. for the kids and sometimes me we play rockband. this tv unlike the samsung can auto adjust the vid/audio timing so the buttons will match up with the sound as well as the video. i had a real problem on my old tv where the button time was so off i would fail the song because i could not push the buttons at the right time. yes i know there is a setting in game to fix this but my 5 year old cant use this and i dont expect him to. with this tv it auto adjusts on its own without any user imput. the tv menu can be a little confusing and if your like me i switch my tv to gaming mode when i use the ps3 because it delivers a much better result. that is also another good feature, when compared to the smasung 5 series the game mode on the toshiba works ALOT better. when you turn it on you can see the screen make changes. i am very happy with the 120hz and the better prosessor when compared to the samsung. the really only complaint i have is the menus. they are very complicated and i have to say the samsung menu was better. with the samsung when you chose an option on-screen it would give you a breif summary of what the option you selected was and what it effected. so if you are a little tv illeterate then that is more user friendly. the toshiba is ok if you know what you are doing. i know when i brought mine home i did not know if the 120hz feature was turned on or off. i had to pull out the manual and find which setting had to be turned on. then you have to navigate youre way through 3 different menus before you get to what you want. just so you know from factory this option is off so its worth finding it. if you know ALOT about tv and tv adjustments this toshiba is no challange. if however you are just getting into the home theater experiance i would suggest reading the manual and having someone who knows what and where the set up menus are because they do get fustrating even to someone like me who plays with tv's on a daily basis. overall its a great tv and im glad i chose the toshiba over the samsung. one last note for the home theater guys on the back of this model of toshiba it has digital audio out in the form of an optical cable. this will support dobly digital 7.1 surround so if you have say a ps3 hooked up steright into the tv you can use the audio out to your amp and still get dolby surrond. on the down side no support for DTS so your best bet is still ps3 to amp amp to tv. for the money you cant beat this tv and FYI..... this tv has a sharp tv brand panal with toshibas own video prosessor, which is faster then the sharp equivelent for ALOT less, this is why i choose this tv. i was a little leairy about buying a toshiba untill i learnt that little fact, so if your like me that helped my decision alot. thanks for readin! 4.5 out of 5 not a 5 star because of the menu maby in the future we will see firmware with better menus

Toshiba 40" Regza LCD TV Defective should be recalled
by njwindsurfer on January 6, 2010
Pros: A little over a year and slightly out of warranty, the screen on the TV developed a vertical rainbow which covers about half of the screen making the TV useless.
Cons: The product had catastophic failure of the LCD screen a little over a year and just out of warranty. Prodcut is useless and Toshiba will not extend warranty.
I tried to appeal to Toshiba but they told me they would not warranty the unit.Summary: Poor quality. Product faoilure. Lack of customer support for a defective porduct.

The Toshiba Regza 40? LCD TV is defective and should be recalled.
A little over a year and slightly out of warranty, the screen on the TV developed a vertical rainbow which covers about half of the screen making the TV useless. I tried to appeal to Toshiba but they told me they would not warranty the unit. I found several other users on blogs complaining of the same issues. I understand if a product is out of warranty and something minor breaks, but for the TV to become completely useless is unacceptable. Toshiba obviously doesn?t care about their reputation. I will not purchase another Toshiba product.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

An Excellent Picture!
by youshouldhateme on November 9, 2009
Pros: Sound is adequate for a TV, not ground rumbling but it still fills the room with out having to crank it. The remote is nice and offers good functionality. And the Picture! Spectacular! Very smooth, minimal pixel blur.
Cons: Heard of a small range of defects by this TV. Go to the Toshiba Website and enter in the serial number on the back to see if your TV will have to be fixed. Mine doesn't have to be fixed. Right now, I can't think of many more cons..

Summary: This is my second LCD TV that I've owned. My first one was a Philips - 42PFL5704D - 42" LCD TV. The sound on it was better, and the frame of the TV was beveled glass so it was much classier looking than this TV, but where it mattered, it's lacking compared to this TV. The 120hz makes the pictures flow very smoothly. On my Philips, there was picture shadowing where the pixels would sort of spaz out in certain situations or seeing a close-up of hockey player you'd see phantom pixels trailing behind the players helmet, very strange. My Toshiba has made my LCD TV experience much better. I have no genuine complaints on this TV as of yet. I've read above about the TV dying after a week. We'll see if that happens. And if it does? I'll update the review. But for now, this TV has pleasantly surprised me. No buyers remorse.

Crap of a TV.
by JDBurnZ on June 4, 2011
Pros: It makes a great mural

Summary: Had my Toshiba 40XV645U for 6 months before display started showing faint black horizontal lines on left hand side, fading to normal colors on right. Progressively got worse. After a little over a year, red vertical streaks began displaying at which point I looked into the warranty. It's only ONE year, on a TV? I've never heard of this. Must be they knew they were creating a junk model.
Toshiba's web site specifically mentions horizontal line issues with this TV but beware, they will not honor them after the insufficient initial 1 year warranty.
My personal opinion is stay away from Toshiba after my experience, better to stick with a better brand such as Sony.
Also encounter issues with sound when the TV has been on over an hour, sometimes you start hearing everything twice, and the audio will become all fuzzy. Power cycling the TV fixes the problem.
Speakers start fuzzing out when volume goes above 32 (out of 100). Sound quality is good, but don't plan on something like this unless you have your own external sound system. -

Summary: I enjoy this t.v. and have had no complaints i bought it in late 09 and it has stood up well to abuse by toddlers and moving the picture is great and the menu is easy to understand but i do wish i could find a solution to the sound issue i keep thinking that i have found it and put in a movie and alas i still have to listen at around 65 to hear the movie but other than that i am very happy with this tv although it does make me nervious though that my local best buy doesn't carry them anymore

Great picture, horrible sound issues.
by clockworkrabbit on July 2, 2010
Pros: Good color, clarity, black levels.
Cons: Has a number of known issues. Cabinet rattle/buzzcould not be fixed after 4 trips from Toshiba repair guys and 3.5 months. They refunded our money eventually. It sounds like a hive of bees buzzing inside your TV with the volume past 20 (out of 80).
Summary: Would not buy a Regza again due to unresolvable sound issues, but the picture quality is pretty good for the price if you have your own sound system (another $200+ ...

I cannot find fault with this TV
by grayja on May 18, 2010
Pros: I like the looks. The performance seems excellent, although I have no comparison with other similar TV's. I really like the picture quality.
Cons: There is nothing I don't like about it.

Summary: After 3 months of using this TV, I have found it very easy to operate. I'm also very impressed with it's ability to handle rough handling. I dropped it onto a carpeted floor on the first day while trying to lift it out of it's packing case on the floor onto the TV table (just above waist height. The surrounding frame/bezel cracked from hitting the edge of the table. As it fell to the floor, I fell on top of it. Apart from the cracked bezel (which I fixed/joined with "Hot Stuff" glue) the system worked perfectly from the first power up - I'm impressed.
