Vizio SV420XVT price range: $900.00

The bottom line: CNET did not review the Vizio SV420XVT, but we did review a larger model in the series.
Although CNET did not review the 42-inch Vizio SV420XVT, we did review the 47-inch Vizio SV470XVT. Judging from their spec sheets the two Vizio flat-panel LCDs are basically identical but for screen size, so we expect the review of the 47-inch model to give a good indication of how the 42-inch model will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Vizio SV470XVT.

Summary: I did alot of comparisons before i bought this tv. In store and online reviews, and i can truly say i'm very happy with my decision. Of all the tvs i saw at best buy this one had the best looking picture in my opinion with the exception of maybe the sharp aquos tvs. Needless to say there is a big difference in the price of the two. Only hold back i was having was the reviews concerning warranty service through vizio. So to ease my mind i bought the tv from Sams Club. Not only did i save a couple extra bucks on this tv by buying it there i also got the 3 year store warranty from them where if anything happens they repair it or give me a new tv, and i only payed about $80 bucks for it. I haven't had any issues with the tv since i'v bought it. I've been watching tv on it and playing my ps3 on and the picture is really superb.

It broke after 10 months of"light use"
by Lmjonsey on January 19, 2009
Pros: Good design good picture for the price when it worked
Cons: My TV DIED Dec 23rd and we still have not had it repaired or replace by Vizio although my husband has made over 25 phone calls to them and they sent a repairman out with the wrong parts who never returned with the correct ones.

Updated on Jan 19, 2009Summary: VIzio'a customer service is HORRID!!
They finally were sending a replacement for our broken TV but instead of delivering to our home they shipped it from LA to San Diego bypassing our home on the way. Now we have to wait several more days for a new TV, It has been almost a month since we first reported the problem to VIzio!!!!!

More for less
by jmarroking on October 2, 2009
Pros: I own several LCDs which include Sony and Samsung models. This LCD performs on par with my Sony Bravia which cost much more. You will not lack for inputs, picture and even the sound is on apr or better with other TV's in my home.
Cons: I did have 1 issue after purchasing this TV in March of this year all the HDMI inputs stopped recognizing anything that was connected. This occurred in late September 09 and Vizio had a tech out to my home within a week to repair it.
Summary: I have purchased 3 Vizio's over the last 3 years and had just had a problem with 1 of them and Vizio made sure that the unit was repaired ...
Summary: I have purchased 3 Vizio's over the last 3 years and had just had a problem with 1 of them and Vizio made sure that the unit was repaired in a reasonable amount of time. May have thought different if I did not have several other TV's but I'm satisfied with the customer service. I purchased this unit through Dell for a little less that $800 and overall I cannot be happier with this TV. I mainly use it for PS3 gaming but on Sundays it displays magnificent picture while watching NFL Sunday ticket along with the other TV's in the house and the picture is on par with the Sony and Samsung TV's. Vizio has made me be a believer over the last couple of years in their brand.
I used to purchase mainly Sony's and Mitsubishi for by bigger screens but now I would feel as confident in buying a Vizio as would in any of the more established or more well known brands. Keep in mind there are better televisions but the cost is often considerably more, Vizio gives a majority of us the best balance of quality, features and PRICE.
Keep some extra cash in your pocket, get a great TV and buy a Vizio, you will not be disappointed. -
VIZIO SV420XVT JUST GOT IT 5/28/09
by unonice on May 29, 2009
Pros: MUTIPLE CONNECTIONS FOR GAMING, COMPUTER, 4 HDMI.
MULTIPLE SETTINGS FOR VISUAL..
EASY SET UP RIGHT OUT THE BOX..
GREAT SOUND
NO GLARE OR REFLEXTION AT ALL !!! SOLID !!
GREAT PRICECons: JIDDER...FRAME RATE FLICKERS, BUT IT DUE TO U.S. NETWORK.. TV. IS FINE..
COLOR, COULD BE MORE SOLID, BUT ITS NOT BAD..
THATS ALL SO FAR (AFTER ONE DAY OF OWNING)Summary: I JUST GOT THIS TV.. SO I AM STILL LEARNING AND MAKING ADJUSTMENTS.. BUT I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED WHAT EVERYONE COMPLAINS ABOUT... "JIDDER"

PICTURE KINDA FLICKERS EVERY FEW SECONDS, BUT IT DUE TO THE 120..
U.S. T.V. RUNS ONLY 60... SO ITS A TECH & NETWORK ISSUE...
BUT AFTER MAKING A FEW ADJUSTMENTS, AND T.V. WARMS UP AND COLABORATES WITH YOUR CABLE OR SATALITE CONNECTION, JIDDER MOTIONS STOPS... YOU WILL HAVE A SMOOTH FRAME RATE...
MY VIZIO STOPPED JIDDER EFFECT AFTER A FEW HOURS (LESS THAN A DAY)
WORKS GREAT... HOWEVER, I MUST AGREE, SAMSUNG , SHARP, AND SONY LCD ARE JUST A WEE BIT BETTER LOOKING ... BUT HEY , FOR THE PRICE , THIS IS A GOOD T.V.
IF U ARE ON A BUDGET ITS A NICE PURCHASE, BUT STICK WITH 42" OR LESS IN SIZE... PICTURE IS NOT AS SOLID ON LARGER VIZIO TV's....
so far so good... i'll write another review in a month or 2....
LETS SEE WHAT IT DOES AFTER A FEW MONTHS... -
Excellent Tv for an excellent price.
by thewwwyzzerdd on April 10, 2009
Pros: -crystal clear picture
-lots of settings slots
-great amount of inputs
-easy to setupCons: -120hz is kind of overrated unless playing videogames, it kind of lags on dvds but this could be because i play dvds on my xbox360.

The BEST picture and quality at the BEST price point!
by hockeydadpdx on March 29, 2009
Pros: This LCD HDTV has the best picture quality, audio quality, connections, remote control, ease of setup, and warranty you can find at the lowest price point on the market.
Cons: I had a small amount of trouble getting the Picture-in-Picture function to work, but I got it figured out and it works great. This is more a problem with the setup guide than it is a problem with the set itself.

Summary: In November 2005 I purchase my first HDTV--a Sony KD34XBR960 (CRT). Reviews at the time raved about the set and indeed it was a wonderful television--until the picture tube blew after 3 1/2 years of normal use. Replacement would have cost more than a new LCD or Plasma. So, after much research and foot work, I replaced it with the Vizio SV420XVT and all I can say is WOW! HD televisions have come a long way.
I went with this particular make & model because it has all the top features combined with the best picture and sound I could find AND at the BEST price (I paid $899.99 @ Costco). I watch sports more than any other type of programming (especially ice hockey) so smooth, natural motion in the picture was a must. The 120Hz frame refresh rate in this set does the trick! Hockey in Hi Definition looks better than it did on my old Sony HD CRT and I wouldn't have thought it possible. Further, the sound quality is excellent. I find the remote control quite intuitive and easy to use. With 4 HDMI inputs, I have ample room for futre use of HDMI devices (I currently connect just two HDMI devices--a Comcast HD cable box and a Sony PS3).
Speaking of a PS3, my son tells me the games look and sound excellent as well. Finally, I have the set in my family room which has a large amount of natural light flooding in during the day and there is no problem with reflection off the screen hindering the picture quality (go with LCD over plasma if you will be using the set in a room with a lot of natural light).
So, I am giving this set a 5-Star rating because it exceeded my expectations. You will not be disappointed you purchased this set, you will be happily surprised that you were able to get so much television for such a low price. Run, don't walk to get this set, you'll be glad you did. -

Summary: I got this the week before the Super Bowl at Costco for $800. Set up was easy. This is our first LCD and we compared this against other models very carefully before deciding on this one. The picture quality is great and we have had no problems. I have seen some reviews that have problems with the sound but it sounds fine to me; if I want it louder or better, I just turn on the surround. I would definitely recommend this model.

Looks like live pictures even on black & white movies
by timtrickett on March 5, 2009
Pros: Using 8 different inputs which makes this LCD very versatile.
Cons: Nothing I can think of.
Summary: Really enjoying it. Have numerous friends comment on how real the picture looks without any prompting on my part. I think the 120hz is what is making the difference

Summary: I purchased this TV at Costco the week that they got the set in stock. I moved a 37" Vizio TV to my home office and put the 42" XVT in the family room paired to a DirecTV HD DVR, a Sony BluRay player and Samsung 1080p upscaling DVD Recorder.
I have a UHF antenna on the roof of my townhouse with an amplifier and rotor. This antenna is split to the master bedroom, living room and family room. The family room antenna connection is split to two media PCs, the HD DVR and the Vizio television.
Even with a split signal, the Digital tuner on the Vizio is extremely sensitive and located 13 analog and 47 digital channels near Dulles Airport in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC. It's nice to have the capability of watch Baltimore, Frederck, Annapolis and Washington area channels. This is particularly useful as a satellite backup. -
Looks GREAT! Very impressed
by ghettoblaster123 on January 28, 2009
Pros: This TV continues to impress me. Looks fantastic with the 120hz refresh set to medium or low even when watching standard digital channels (not necessarily HD), but with HD channels it really shines. Required very little tweaking out of the box.
Cons: The blacks could be a bit darker if i were able to be very picky, and the speakers do sound good but they are a little weak for my particular room.
Summary: If you are looking for a first time LCD or even a replacement for an older one and are one a bit of a budget, check this set out! You ...
