Nice Kitchen HDTV!

Summary: I just purchase this set at Costco and compare it with Samsung 940mw from Office Depot. I like this set over the Samsung because the size is smaller while the screen is 20" vs. Samsung 19" and it has 16:9 instead of 16:10. Because of it smaller size by 1.5 height shorter; I can move it to the back of the wall and still have a clear view of the screen; while the Samsung top of the frame was hidden and I had to move it 5 inches to have the same view. The overall picture quality and specs between the two are almost identical.
Price was $369 for the Samsung. Vizio was $400.00.
It does not have the Xbrite feature found in Sony, NEC or Sharp screens but I did not find it was worth the extra $100- $130 more for a plastic screen coating. If I wanted it in the future I can buy it and put it in for $30.00 plus shipping.
All in all, I am happy; it much more detailed, brighter and nicer then my Sony Wega 20". I am still using Dish Analog signal but looks great. DVDs are very good.
The Vizio sound is like threater quality. It is just unbelievable that this small TV can product such surround sound!14 out of 14 users found this user opinion helpful.

Simply Amazing

I have purchased lots of electronics over the years and already had 3 HDTVs, but this HDTV is the most versatile gizmo that I have ever seen/used.
This email is being composed while I am watching & listening to ESPN HD in a PIP in the lower right hand corner of the display.
The 20" widescreen format and the built-in clear QAM tuner sold me on getting the VX20L before I even saw it at a local Costco.
Previously I had a small LCD monitor connected to my PC and a small analog TV sitting at the side.
Now I have one widescreen display for doing spreadsheets, surfing, and emailing while watching HDTV in a window.
All in one, a great product at a great price.
It is the only HDTV less than 26" that I could find anywhere.9 out of 10 users found this user opinion helpful.

What more could you ask for in a small TV

Summary: I have been looking for this TV for 2 years. We remodeled our kitchen and set aside a spot for a small TV - and this is perfect. It has a built-in HDTV tuner, so we can watch OTA HDTV shows for free, and we also have it connected to our Dish Network receiver over coax so the kids can watch programs recorded on the DVR.
The design is clean and crisp - perfectly matching our kitchen, or any other updated kitchen. It is small for a 20" TV. Looks like a picture frame. I highly recommend this. Plus it is from Costco. So no worries about returning it later if I decide otherwise in a few months.
I have used Vizio LCD computer monitors for years and have never had a problem, so I don't expect any with this TV.
Thanks Vizio!5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Perfect HDTV for the Kitchen!
by PhillyBoy919 on May 31, 2007

Summary: If you have a small area in need of a vibrant HD TV or monitor, then this is your TV. The picture, even by modern standards, is phenomenal with an HD source. Standard def signals, as with most hi-def displays, are passable but unspectacular.
The sound you get from this little thing is a bit surprising. Not that its theater sound, the quality is about par for the course with a 20" LCD, but its the separation of the channels that will surprise you. Given enough room, the "virtual surround" setting will actually project fairly far to either side and will at times startle you.
I have my VX20L in the kitchen at the end of a built-in breakfast bar, hooked up to a Comcast HD box with a DVI to HDMI cable. The position of the TV makes it viewable to the entire kitchen and eating area, thanks to the wide viewing angles.
In addition to using it as a TV, I am putting together a mini form-factor PC to be used as a kitchen PC (read: email and internet only), which will be hooked up via the VGA port. A Windows Media Center extender is also being added to hook it into my Media server for movies and DVR.
All said, I'd definitely buy this again and highly recommend it anywhere you need a small and stylish HD set. I purchased at Costco with a $50 off coupon.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best price/feature combo in this size
by idahoann on December 29, 2006

Summary: Bought at Costco after looking at other options. Liked the price for features but worry that after one year, I am on my own. Called tech support 3 times for simple question about S video and only 1 person was professional. Other was nice but...and third hung up on me. Comes with same universal remote as my Insignia 27" LCD, which did not come with the AV cable or as "pretty" a manual (not that either gets me where I want to go). I have run this TV through a Samsung VCR/DVD combo. The picture was fine with the AV 3 way cable but I tried S video. It only works with the DVD part of the combo unit; I cannot get the VCR to play through the TV using S video. Vizio told me to call Samsung who provides no tech support for my 2 year old basic combo unit. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Good Bang for Your Buck

Summary: In my humble opinion, this Vizio has a top-notch picture. I also have Magnavox and Sharp Aquos tvs both of which have excellent pictures but not any better than the Vizio. The factory presets on the picture require tweaking, as it did with the others. As for the sound, yes, it's not great, but no small tv I ever came across had decent sound. With small speakers it's to be expected. The user guide is printed in good English with full color graphics on quality paper.....a nice touch. The Vizio comes with a one year warranty on both parts and labor, unlike most of the major brands that only give you 90 days labor. I think this speaks to the quality of the unit. I'm not saying that this is the best tv on the market, that opinion lies with the consumer. But I don't think you can find a better set at this price point.

Summary: This is my second Vizio. I'm mostly pleased with my L37, except for some remote-sensor issues. Anyway, the VX20 is feature packed for the price, and has a surprisingly good picture. I wish CNET would give it the full review to recommend picture settings, though, as I can't seem to get it just right. Major complaint is the audio quality, but I guess I can't expect too much with those tiny speakers. Sounds like an AM radio! Also, the panoramic function (to fill up the 16:9 screen with 4:3 video) distorts the edges much more than my L37 does, making it almost unwatchable. WIDE mode works better, if you can get used to everyone looking short and fat. Overall I'm pleased for the price, but not jumping up and down.

Good display, terrible sound

Summary: We purchased the VX20L yesterday and promptly took it home and set it up. It was easy to set up and included an RCA cable so nothing else was needed to hook it up. Video quality on standard definition TV sources was acceptable, though there were some jagged edges. Blacks could have been darker, but for the price the picture was good. The ergonomics of the remote were a bit strange- volume on the right and channel select on the left, and a lot of small single-function buttons at the bottom where I might have preferred menu options.
Unfortunately the sound quality was so poor that it was simply unacceptable. You can't expect theater quality sound out of a 20 inch flat screen, but the sound was tinny and hollow, and the maximum volume level was so quiet that I couldn't even hear quiet dialog. Thinking the speakers were to blame, I tried hooking up a midrange 2.1 computer speaker set through the headphone jack, but the sound was just as tinny and hollow and not much louder. When hooked up to my old Philips 19" CRT these speakers can shake the walls of my house, so after this disappointing result I decided that the actual audio processing hardware in the TV was no good and returned the set. I wanted to test the display unit in the store to see if I simply got a bad set, but the audio on that set didn't work at all. I've read through the other reviews and seen problems with sound quality mentioned, so I'm now convinced that it is a design shortcoming and not simply a single defective unit.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good picture but horrible lifespan!

Pros: Good picture, great price.
Cons: Horrible lifespan. Sometimes blurs with action, like sports events.
