The good: Comprehensive connectivity including five HD-compatible inputs and a PC input; resolves every detail of 1080 resolution sources; accepts 1080p over HDMI, DVI, and PC inputs; excellent performance as a PC monitor.
The bad: Subpar picture via standard-def inputs; somewhat inaccurate color; pedestrian styling; terrible remote; no tuner; only one standard-def input.
The bottom line: A high resolution, a bunch of HD inputs, and decent image quality performance make the Westinghouse LVM-47w1 a strong contender in the budget, big-screen LCD category.

Maximum Inputs, Minimum Styling (if that matters)
by MichaelJBrennan on December 1, 2006
Pros: More imputs than most people need. Great picture for a bright room.
Cons: The huge input selection increases the desire to buy and connect one of everything for it. Plus the IR sensor is terrible.

Summary: I bought this monitor a few weeks ago for $1,800 at Best Buy and I am loving it. I was prepared to buy the much more expensive 52" Sony KDL-52XBR3 LCD ($6,800), but could not justify the price difference. Sure the Sony's facade was prettier and had a slightly better picture, but for my money those two things were not enough. I'd say the only negative part of this purchase is I have since felt compelled to buy a upscaling HDMI DVD-Recorder, XBox 360 with HD-DVD drive, HD Cable box, wall mount, and a Bose Acoustimass 16 Series II speaker system to complete the setup. All by the way, easily covered with the money I did not spend on the much more expensive Sony. Even with an Xbox 360, PS2, MythTV, HD-Cable, and upscaling HDMI DVD-recorder attached, I still have two component inputs available. It's running 1080p on everything except the PS2, this thing's picture and inputs are amazing.

Top Value as HD Monitor

Summary: I bought two of these for my conference room. The main goals were large screen, high resolution, and lots of pc compatible inputs. This monitor (it's really more of a monitor than a tv) delivers!!! And can you believe the price - $1799 on sale at Best Buys!!! People, this is not a 40" or 42" 720p 1280x768 unit either - it's the state of the art big boy. For my purposes, it delivers. For TV and DVD's it's totally satisfactory as well. I haven't hooked up and HD sources yet, but I expect they will be as good as the high res PC performance. On the downside, the off perpendicular picture contrast is weak so the more straight on you're viewing angle the better. Also, the remote has a narrow beam which I have read some complaints about. Well, that's a lifesaver when you have two of these right next to each other and you want to adjust only one. I'll bet the Westinghouse engineers planned it that way. Finally, the styling could have easily been better, but if an industrial designer like me can live with it, so can you. Bottom line is that if you're looking for a big, high res, versatile monitor at an unbelievable price - look no further.

Great TV for those without a bottomless wallet
by oldbucsfan on May 24, 2007
Pros: Great picture quality on HD, SD looks like SD, settings allow for adjusting color and contrast, works with PS3 (now), 1080p, not expensive
Cons: could be 3" bigger, problems with any lcd tv, contrast can be initially bad if settings aren't adjusted

Summary: The main point of this review is that you might look at it in the store and think that it looks a little off from the other tv's. It does, because the initial settings don't do the tv justice.
The best solution is to turn down the backlight and increase or decrease the brightness and contrast on a dark movie with the lights out to make sure you can see the detail in the blacks. If it gets bright in the room, you can always just increase the backlight. That is really a problem for any lcd screen though, so I don't count that against it mainly because the problem is solvable.
After changing these settings (and some saturation as well) at a store, you could really see this set come alive.
Now the PS3 works perfectly through HDMI with this tv set after a PS3 update. Gaming may be best on a plasma, but I use my PS3 for gaming, (upscaled) DVD's, and Blueray movies in full 1080p. This set is also perfect for computers (2 DVI and 1 VGA connectors). So, for those who are more interested in a all-around solution for a moderate price, this is the set to get.
There is a new version of this set comming out that will allow for more HDMI connections and a usb connector for firmware updates, but notice that it does not come with any DVI connectors. (TX-47F430)
The HD looks perfect. The SD doesn't look all that great, but that is because after looking at the HD, the SD just doesn't cut it anymore. The SD is probably only this bad because the TV is so large and it is a lcd screen rather than a crt. But I noticed if you just sit or step away a couple more feet from the tv, it looks just like a crt. However, SD DVD's look great on the tv, so I am thinking the issue is simply the SD.
The tv could probably use to be 50", but one has to wonder about when a tv gets too big.
I am giving this tv a 10, not because it is a perfect tv, but because it is perfect for it's category. "A Moderately Priced LCD HDTV with 1080p Capability"Updated
I don't use them because I have a surround system, but when I tried them out they sounded amazing for the tiny little things they are. I love that the speakers are on the bottom and not on the sides of the screen. Nothing annoys me more than attempting to make a widescreen tv wider by adding speakers to the sides of it.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

For the money, and even not, it's one awesome monitor.
by sbsurf101 on October 22, 2006
Pros: Thin. Light. 1080p on most inputs. Good picture even on low res. sources.
Cons: All the typical LCD complaints: loss of detail in contrasty scenes, picture lightens up as you move more than 45 degrees off center.
Summary: Look, considering what I paid for this set, and the fact that it's still the only 1080p monitor of this size with all the features that it has, and ...
Summary: Look, considering what I paid for this set, and the fact that it's still the only 1080p monitor of this size with all the features that it has, and that the picture is awesome on computer and HD sources, and good on SD sources, there's nothing below "excellent" that I could have picked as its rating. That's all I can say.

Everything you really need
by halflinggray on November 30, 2006
Pros: More imputs than most users will need. Least expensive 1080p display for its size
Cons: Okay, the packaging around the display is pretty utilitarian.

Summary: Some might point out that a major draw back of this monitor is that it is, in fact, a monitor. Not tuner is involved, and really doesn't need one. Most people out there are getting there HD content through a dish or cable provider, and they are going to give you a converter box anyway. I know I do, and found no reason to spend the same money if not more on an inferior display with a tuner you really aren't going to use anyway.

Great monitor -- outstanding for the $1800 price tag!
by erikofca on January 10, 2007
Pros: Excellent as a 1920x1080 computer monitor and for HDTV, very good for DVDs
Cons: Crummy std def TV picture, horrible remote, no remote codes for getting another remote to emulate this one

Summary: For $1800, I was able to get Best Buy's only remaining LVM-47w1 anywhere in the USA (so it seemed). This monitor turned out to be an incredible deal -- anything comparable in size and 1080 capability costs > $1000 more.
I hooked up my XP/Media Center PC to it via a DVI port and the PC immediately installed it as a 1920x1080 monitor. I can actually read iTunes playlists, surf the web, etc. from across the room. Only problem is that games at full resolution overpower my NVidia FX5700LE graphics card... time for another upgrade.
HDTV is excellent using our local cable company's scant selection of HD channels and over component video cabling.
DVDs via standard 480p are very good over component video cabling.
Std def cable TV is disappointing, with some oversaturation of colors and generally mushy appearance. Putting the TV in "wide" aspect mode worsens these conditions.
The remote, as noted in the other reviews, is cheaply made and has to be directly aligned toward the base of the TV to make it work. Buttons are hard to find. Even worse, Westinghouse hasn't published remote codes, so I can't get any of my other remotes to emulate the basic volume, source, and on/off functions from the TV's crap remote.
Overall, I'm very happy with the monitor. For the amazing price, I'm more than happy to forgive the shortcomings of the TV's std def display and the abysmal remote.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice picture from High Def but horrible vertical banding
by lukenuke on January 8, 2007
Pros: DVI and HDMI inputs make HD look fantastic
Cons: SD looks bad (but that isnt a real concern), vertical banding, uneven backlighting

Summary: This is the second Westinghouse I've been through, the first was the 1080p 42" which I returned because it had a bunch of problems (stuck pixles, lock-ups, vertical banding amongst other things.) I hoped that the second time would be a charm but the vertical banding and eneven backlighting are just unacceptable to me. I'm going to try one last time with another Westinghouse 47" but if that has the same vertical banding issues I'll retire the idea of buying another westinghouse.

Fits all my TV and gaming needs

Summary: I have owned this beastie for a few months. For me, it is all about resolution. I bought this *monitor*(remember, no built in tuner) for both TV viewing and PC gaming and with the DVI inputs, the LVM-47w1 gave me what I wanted at low price. I get my HD content from the cable box so I'm not missing a built in tuner( while saving about $400). All of my other video needs, I pipe it through my PC. The $400 I saved on having no tuner, I threw into the video card
. Styling I may be pedestrian, but this baby looks great wall mounted (highly recommended). Built-in speakers - who needs'em? Audio via my nice stereo system.
Video, to my amateur eyes, is great. HD looks awesome! Discovery HD is drool worthy. PC gaming is fantastic. We are talking Doom3 at 1920x1080 - scary! I had a small party with iTunes running and a full screen visualizer turned on. The kids were almost hypnotized. We watched some college football game broadcast in HD and it looked great. Later, one friend called and told me "My TV now sucks, thanks a lot".
Mission accomplished.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Westinghouse doesn't back up its products
by dogonets on February 7, 2009
Pros: For the 1 year and 5 days that the screen worked, I loved the tv, the picture was great, the sound was great, worked amazingly well as my computer monitor and my tv.
Cons: Always had issues with changing the source using the remote. The LCD screen died 5 days after the warranty ended. Westinhouse has spent the last 5 months ignoring their service company about fixing my tv out of warranty

Summary: If you are going to spend $1500 on a lcd tv, buy one with a long warranty and then spend the money to extend it. Westinghouse customer service sucks. The company they contract out to for service repairs is awesome, but they can only do so much when the Westinghouse folks don't return their phone calls or send out parts. I paid an extra $100 to have a service technician visit me to repair my tv. It took 6 weeks for Westinghouse to send him the parts they thought would fix it, the circuit boards. The main board was replaced no problem, the LCD control boards that they sent had the wrong connectors and could not be installed. I've been waiting 3 months for Westinghouse to answer their own contractors about whether they will send out new boards with the right connectors, or if they will take the service tech's report and and send out a new screen.
Admittedly Westinghouse has told me almost verbatum "your warranty expired 5 days before your tv died. We don't have to fix anything" However the service company assured me that Westinghouse was going to fix my tv.
At this point I'm either considering purchasing my own new screen, which doesn't seem to exist. Or purchasing a new tv. I'm hoping that perhaps I can convince Westinghouse to at least take the broken piece of crap off my hands without charge. (I really don't want to try to find a place to accept a broken 47" tv for recycling). My advice steer clear of WESTINGHOUSE - it isn't worth the pain.
